Love Adam’s reharms because they are so tasteful. Like a lot of people, he could throw a shit ton of dense harmony that scares off the majority of people, but he doesn’t, he uses very colorful chords with well written progressions that complement the songs melody.

I feel like I will like this version more, absolutely no shade to John Mayer.. but the musician in me will love these chord changes and musical approach more. But I'm sure his actual real version will have a different but still awesome vibe.

I'm so satisfied that I called the IV chord modulation before you said it. Totally an intuitive choice, and there's that feeling of warming/settling into the modulation. Awesome work you all!

I went to two of the top music schools in the world, have won major positions in 4 major orchestras across North America and Europe. That being said, Adam Neely's talent, vision, and creativity make me want to cry. Thank you for all you do Adam, you are an amazing talent and a huge inspiration to the music community. Also, ridiculous singing, Mary, what a voice!

AND NOW... An Adam Neely smooth-jazz cover of a Mary Spender interpretation of an unreleased (back then) John Mayer song! I only regret that I found this entire chain of beautiful music wackiness a year and change late. Great stuff all around.

This was just so fascinating. The music that I strive to learn and emulate is this fully orchestrated, smooth jazz, 80s, R&B vibe type of music that I grew up with, so this was just a really really happy 15 minutes. Thank you all so much for working on it and sharing

I’ve noticed that the last year has brought a lot more of Adam creating/composing/producing music instead of just analyzing it. I’m really really digging the shift.

My first post here Adam ... Loved how you brought me right back to my 80s college days, bar band singer, backed by a bunch of music school students mixing up the sets with Weather report and a host of eclectic sets of material - 70s acid classics and funk, country rock, folk, reggae, ska and of course quality pop of the day including Toto. John Mayer was just a toddler - you and Mary weren't even born. But your mashup / re-arrangement of this not-yet- released-song really took me back. Both you and Mary and faves of my YT travels. Makes me happy to see y'all loving the 80s - back then it was music we loved to hate.

What a supergroup! Every time Josh does anything I'm floored, Shubh is a rockstar, and Mary melts my heart. And to clarify, I'm a Neely Patron. This couldn't be better.

Hi Adam. I've never written you a question before so I don't know how this works or whether you might see it. So I was watching your Q+A #27 from 2017 (I believe the title was 'music is not a meritocracy' ), and the last question you answered mainly regarded confidence while playing your instrument. You mentioned a jazz pianist who performed very 'physically' , involving his whole body without compromising the piece (rhythmic precision, dynamics etc. ), mastering and being in contact with the music he was playing on the keyboard. I'm aware of your explanation and that this is just a fragment of it, but although I usually have a very similar point of view to yours. I actually used to think the same thing, and for some situations it still is that way. But through learning, sharing experiences and especially growing to my own experience with my music (/instrument) teacher(s), I now have a more relative perspective. You said that not only moving your fingers (or what you need to move in order to play your instrument) but also involving the rest of your body can significantly change a performance (in a good way) and be proof that you have confidence. My point is: sometimes moving your body can take away a lot of the energy (not necessarily strength) you would concentrate on your instrument, so maybe the performance might be more exciting to see; but then again maybe, if you close your eyes and just listen, it might sound very plain, or maybe lacking something, and if the musician had concentrated and directed his energy and focus all on the touch, even staying perfectly still, it might sound much more confident and dense, than the previous performing mode. I don't want to sound arrogant, I'm just a 17 y/o high schooler from Italy, but honestly I think this is something very important to talk about. Lots of people who maybe are very confident and are great musicians are told to move more: to seem less stiff, give better 'interpretation' and - ironically - look more natural. I think that's fairly limiting, close minded and maybe even very personal. For instance, I play the piano, and maybe when I'm studying Mozart, Shubert or Ligeti, I try to direct all the energy I have to the necessary and fundamental parts of my body. When I'm playing and singing along to a jazz ballad, or even more with groovy stuff, I might instead feel the urge to move all my body, but I think that's very personal and it's something that changes from individual to individual; I think making a rule or theory for this is very unreliable, but I do think talking about it wouldn't hurt. Great record. "Havona" (Adam mispronounces it "Havana" at 2:02) is apex Jaco. His two bass solos are godlike, and elsewhere he hammers the song forward. I thought he was playing sixteenth notes in the "chorus" under Wayne Shorter, but no he's just willing the song forward.

In a Prince-like judo move with Chappelle's pancakes, you just know JM gonna sneak in quotes from this version when he eventually plays it out live 😄
