REGULAR Paddle vs GREENLAND Paddle - Kayak Paddle Speed Test using PAKAYAK
After the Speed Test between the Pakayak and the Tucktec, I was curious about the speed difference between the Regular EUROBLADE Paddle vs GREENLAND Paddle. This time, this will be a fairer test as I used the Pakayak Bluefin 142 for both tests while using a Regular Euroblade paddle vs a Greenland paddle.
For the Euroblade, I used a Hornet low angle paddle while for the Greenland Paddle, I used the Gearlab Akiak. The results were not so surprising but it was settled my curiosity once and for all.
If you want me to try any other tests involving the Pakayak, Tucktec, Euroblade paddle, or Greenland Paddle, please let me know!

It is nice to see you out there experimenting with different paddles. It is very informative too. Good job on the video. If you try canted blade strokes with your Greenland paddle, however, you can accelerate your speed without putting too much strain on your shoulders. Basically, when your blade dips into the water, it slices into it angled. When it comes to Greenland forward strokes, there is also a so-called power zone which is from the front tip of your cockpit to all the way to the end. Rather than reaching far forward to generate powerful strokes like Euro-paddle styles, you dip your blade into the water almost next to your cockpit, pull it all the way as far as you can, and exit it out of the water.

Your results are quite credible. As someone who spent about equal time with greenland, euro and wing paddles, this is the kind of difference I would expect. Not too slow, but less efficient in high power application owing to mechanics of the different surface distribution over the length of the paddle.

It’s funny where tech is taking us in the seventies and early eighties I paddled most of the inner Hebrides using a £10 paddle made by a great canoeist from Yorkshire called Lofty Wright. Well after looking at carbon fibre and other very expensive offerings I honestly don’t know how we did it, or is high tech stuff just a come on to buy expensive gear I’m sure the two boys who paddled around most of Scotlands west coat in the thirties did it with just our kind of paddles. Well my old vcp anas acuta and Lofties paddle did just fine.

I too have one of Lofty's paddles! He made it for me in about 1986, can't remember what it cost though.lol. It is a beautiful laminated marine ply (Ash and Oak) with a Douglas Fir shaft rescued from a gym climbing frame. Bit weighty though at nearly 1.5 kg. Got me round just about all of the Inner Hebrides and more before I moved on to a Lendal Corryvreckan. Still have his paddle and a pair of Lendal Seamasters splits. Both based, I think, on a Derek Hutchison design? Getting back into kayaking after a 10 year hiatus, (just retired) so thinking of a Greenland/Aleut paddle for the creaking joints now. And, talking of hi tech gear my first summer sea kayaking (1981) did Raasay, followed by Coll and Tiree in a cag which was my motorbike oversuit with the legs cut off! Times have changed. p.s. The kayak then was a Lindisfarne Voyager which even the Nordkapp lads thought was tippy!

Thank you for a useful comparison! I think that's the conundrum as you mention - speed will be higher with the euro vs the greenland paddle, just as a wing paddle vs the euro, but then again, for a really long paddle, the endurance factor becomes interesting... somewhat depends on the individual kayaker, gear and trip parameters I guess. I'm also curious to experiment more with this.

FYI your hands should be significantly closer together on the greenland paddle. I'm 5'11" and use the same paddle, I'm pretty sure my hands are at least mostly on the black part when I paddle. I found this change happened semi-naturally for me as I used it more and it increased my leverage. I'm pretty sure hand position matters more on the greenland than the euroblade as the more you choke up the less of the blade face there is for paddling, though tbh this is more based on feel than any physics analysis. In rough conditions I'll choke up more. Also when I'm trying to sprint ironically since it feels better with the higher paddle angle, but that might be a habit I should break. My experience so far is that the greenland just doesn't want ya to sprint! Which is actually kinda good for me lol so I've been sticking with it.

220cm-es greenland lapát egy vicc, pont az a lényege, hogy hosszú legyen. Nekem a túralapátom 220cm, a greenlandi 240cm minimum.

The Greenland is similar to an Okinawan paddle which confused me the first time I saw one. I thought maybe it was used in the Sabani and Haari (a kind of dragon boat) as an equalizer so that everyone, including skinny rowers, had a chance. Needless to say the race I was in had us paddling crazy fast since the narrow blade moves through the water easily. In other competitions they use the Euro style paddle or one closer in shape to the ones used in Hawaii. The Okinawan paddle is more uniform in width and some even get narrower towards the tip. I tried to insert mine forwards into the sea at the side of the boat as far as I could. These paddles are not double-ended and are used on one side of a boat unless you have the last (stern) seat which being narrower allows for switching a paddle to eithet side as needed or to steer. The Sabani also has a sail which can help in open water. They have an annual race similar to the Moloka'i Hoe.

Nice. I have some observations and suggestions that may lead to different results. Your stroke with the GP could be improved, I believe this would give superior results to the Euroblade. 1. The catch could be cleaner and the blade could be better angled (Canted) 2. The stroke, close to the boat with your hands extended into the water. This gives an extend power phase due to opposing forces (kayak hull and blade) Hull Resists the forces of the blade pulling down. The two forces working against each other cause forward propellant. Imagine two flat surfaces with a hinge at one end in the water, when you push the =two together the water accelerates out. 3. Rotation. More torso rotation will make it easier to extend the hand into the water and give more power with less effort. I think you will find the GP ends up being faster than the EB. Give it a try, I look forward to your results.

I made a 250 cm wooden Aleut paddle with a wider blade that gives me a good bit more speed than my Gearlab GP. I like my Gearlab GP (second one I've bought), but the Aleut paddle tends to beat it in high angle, low angle and top speed. The ridge on an Aleut paddle also auto-indexes the blade to the water, so you don't need to focus on canting the blade.

  • @wayfinderali

  • @wisenber

    @wisenber

@@wayfinderali The sarcastic answer would be start off with a typical Greenland paddle blank, then remove everything that isn't an Aleut blade. I never found an Aleut paddle specific set of instructions. However, the same methods as a Greenland paddle build applies. I used GP methods and found some images (Tuktu paddles and estpolepaddles have good ones) to base mine on. I would err on the side of simplicity for your first one, as even with a few mistakes, you still end up with a usable paddle. The simple way is one face of your paddle is a Greenland paddle, and the other has a ridge/spine on it. The ridge/spine is made by just shaping that side to have one. The more complicated ones have a spine on one face and the other is concave. I found that method to add more time and effort without much noticeable gain. In short, find your favorite Greenland paddle instruction method, then just make the slight modification leaving material on one face to produce a spine. If you ever intend to make it into a two piece paddle, make sure the middle of the loom is shaped to hold a carbon fiber ferule. Hope that helps....

But after watching many reviews, and gone passed the hype and populistic mumbo jumbo, then I am quite sure it is a good fit for my type of paddling. Kayaking has never been about speed for me, always been about enjoying the nature, and such up every moment. All the sounds and sometimes lack of it. Adding I am 52 and not getting younger, te Greenland paddle just sounds like a good choice. Less strain on your body, more silent paddling, slower (but not slow), than Euro blade, and then there is the fun making it. I do not buy the hype, that it is a paddle developed over hundreds of years, and as such a wonder of the world. Greenland do not have timber to chose from, they got to make do with what they had, mostly driftwood, and obviously big blades are not an option. So IMHO they did well, but only according to their resources. That said, it seems easier to roll with, and that was a crucial skill for them.

When I heard the gurgling slurp with each stroke I would see a hole behind the paddle. Letting me know I was wasting effort. Your pace builds slowly with a GP. Not for sprints. My paddle stroke always did favor my right. I’m right handed. By the time I built up the left arm, the right was that much stronger too!

Better Euro technique would also make the Euro more efficient. And ultimately, it will be faster if all things were equal (which they never are!).

This is not a good test. Your knowledge of the paddle stroke is extremely that of beginner. Sadly I don’t mean this as a criticism it’s just a fact the surface area of the two paddles is vastly different and the efficiency of the blade in the water is also different, you get tired with a euro paddle because you’re paddling much harder not because the paddle is harder to use the main reason for the difference is the fact that you don’t use your torso, your legs or your shoulders and you begin the stroke too early and end up too late wasting energygood luck. Thank you for the video.

Your speed conversion is likely wrong. 7.5 kph = 4.66 mph. So your greenland paddle test is much slower (12% reduction).

With my lightweight euro blade I can paddle up to 12mph, with my greenland I can do 14mph. My favorite story was using the greenland and coming up behind a 10 hp john boat and bumping into it to get it to move off the trail I was on. I bumped it and easily kept up with it everytime the guy turned around I was there. The Greenland does not have a fast stop nor take off like the Euro, but for me over a distance I have a faster pace and less arm/shoulder strain.

I’m sorry, but you must be mixing up mph and km/h. I can say few things with more conviction without knowing you in person than you’re not paddling 12 mph w Euro, let alone 14 mph with a Greenland paddle. I’m a dedicated surfskier and use a wing blade. You are definitely not doing 12 mph, not even if your name is Greg Barton and you just went back to 1990 with a time machine😂😂😂. Sorry dude, but had to call it out. Now, if you mean while surfing down a 15 footer, sure, but Euro vs GL wouldn’t make a difference.
