REGULAR MALLET vs. DEAD BLOW MALLET

REGULAR MALLET vs. DEAD BLOW MALLET
#Shorts
What is the difference between a dead blow and a regular mallet. All the difference in the world. This short eleven second clip clearly demonstrates what the difference is. With a regular mallet part of the force is distributed into the board and some of the force is returned into the mallet causing it to bounce. (Incidentally, the same is happening between the board and the bench, causing the board to bounce up as well). But, with the dead blow mallet, the when the mallet hits the board and begins to rebound, the hundreds of BBs that are loose inside the mallet head, force the mallet back into the board causing it to be driven into the board and not bounce back. The result is that the force of the blow is driven into the board. If you have never seen a dead blow mallet in action, it is quite a sight to behold.
This dead blow mallet was made from a mallet that I had originally made 30 years ago. I replaced it earlier this week when I made three new mallets: a small, a medium and a large mallet. I decided not to discard my old mallet but to try up-cycling it into a dead blow mallet.

Just for the info: A Deadblow hammer is a 'hollow' hammer that is filled with lead/steel shot. It gives a very solid impact with zero bounce.

It is indeed the deepest form of which craft...which crafted mallet is the dead blow mallet? And which crafted is the regular mallet? The answer? The first one is just a block of wood, so it bounces. The second hammer has two cavities filled with hundreds of BBs. This is why the second hammer is called a dead blow hammer and why it does not bounce. If you want to see behind the veil, you can watch me make each hammer and see the difference in these two videos: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWug16ywnNewe7g.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYydx5aTgNPVlrA.html

    3 жыл бұрын

Ok, that is one of the comments I appreciate the most! Most are like "you banging shit together, you a**hole." But, there is a point to it all in the end. Although they look the same the two hammers are very different. Each hammer is being swung with the same force with the intention of keeping the hammer on the block. With the first hammer, it is impossible because there is a rebound effect when the first hammer hits the wood. With the second hammer the rebound effect is overcome, not by me, but by the hundreds of BBs that are inside two cavities in the head of the hammer. That is why it is called a dead blow hammer. The BBs deaden the blow, or stop the bounce back that would otherwise be there. Here is the link to the video where I made the hammer if you are interested in seeing how I put the BBs into the hammer head ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWug16ywnNewe7g.html ). I would encourage you to check it out. Most hardware stores sell dead blow hammers of different types. You can pick one up and shake it and you will hear something rattling inside. It is filled with either sand or BBs or something similar. And, it really does make that much of a difference. Thanks for watching and most of all thanks for your comment!

Depends on what the head is made out of and what youre hitting. And that means more swings, more work.

@@MadebyWolfe ... I have a dead blow hammer for moving frame rails in Chevy pickup trucks. You use a ball peen hammer to relieve the stress. And the dead blow hammer to get it within one millimeter Square. The only frames in the automotive industry that I have never been able to adjust with a dead blow hammer are, the Mitsubishi Montero. And the Ford F-150. The dead blow hammer is the perfect tool to make it look as though, a frame repair never happened. Works best with a laser measuring system... so you know exactly where the frame rail lands, after you hit it. A dead blow hammer is an essential tool in heavy collision and auto body repair. You'd be surprised how quickly you can jockey around the front end of a Toyota, or an Oldsmobile, with just a dead blow. As an auto body professional, I'll give you a little secret. You don't need $80,000 worth of tools, to fix some of these rental wrecks out here. Most of them are just nothing more than a complicated facade. Sure, it looks tough and strong... But it's not. I only know of two vehicles, that are extremely resistant to am impact. The Hydroform frame of a Ford F-150. And a Mitsubishi Montero. You're going to need a really big hammer, to make one of those things move. And you're going to have to hit it, really hard! But this is why we have leverage. With enough leverage, you can move the world.

So when I made the dead blow mallet I was not entirely sure just how well it was going to work. I did a lot of thinking about the compartment size, shape, and the amount of BBs. Would just drilling a round hole provide the same dampening capability as a square hole? It if it is rectangular can it just be a square, or should the face of the hole be parallel to the striking face of the mallet. I went with a polygon that had a parallel face. And it worked. Woohoo. The mallets were a lot of fun. Thanks for watching and commenting. How did the mortise chisel sharpening go?

Rishi, am I hitting the blocks differently? ANSWER: No. Or at least I am not swinging the hammers differently. • @MadebyWolfe

Actually, it is a great question if you are not familiar with dead blow hammers. If both hammer heads are the same weight (this dead blow is actually a little heavier) the force is the same, BUT, with the regular hammer some of the force the transferred back into the hammer, which is why it bounces back while with the dead blow almost all the force is transferred into the piece you are hitting. So, the end effect is that it hits “harder”.

Dead blow hammers are not solid. They are hollowed out and filled with small beads, usually lead, as you swing the dead blow hammer the beads are somewhat suspended so to speak. As the hammer impacts the object being struck the beads begin to catch up to the hammer and cancel out the force being absorbed, which normally causes it to bounce, by the hammer. Thus keeping the hammer from bouncing as demonstrated with the first hammer.

It is good for lots of things, but when hitting solid resident things, like the block on this bench, it has a lot of rebound, or bounce back. The second mallet has hundreds of BB's that are in two cavities inside its head and those BB's prevent the same rebound/bounce back and instead transfer all the force into the block/bench. I think that with a dead blow hammer with lead shot in a cavity in the head of the hammer, it gets a little more complicated, because the lead shot in the two cavities are also creating a secondary application of force and because of there are hundreds of spheres, that force is being spread out over time. But your very simple explanation of the physics and the reading I just did on elastic and inelastic collisions has helped me understand it better. THANKS!

Thanks for watching and for commenting.

Deadblow mallets are hollow and filled with sand, lead dust, or lead shot so the mass stays in one end and doesn't bounce the force up. Use them for zeroing and leveling a shop vise and tapping things that can't flex or be turned out of place. There are also other mallets for all sorts of small things like rawhide hammers, silicone head hammers, each of which are soft to set something without marring it or damaging a surface mainly for dies which you also would more likely use a deadblow for especially a rubber coated one. Brass head mallets are for hardened material usually but still don't want to mar the surface or dent it or In some cases risk shattering the metal. Fun fact for you guys.

Am I hitting the blocks differently? ANSWER: No. Or at least I am not swinging the hammers differently. That is way it is called a dead blow hammer. The BBs deaden the blow, or stop the bounce back that would otherwise be there. At first when he hits the wood hammer bounces back a little as an opposite reaction to the force he gave, whereas if you closely look at the second hammer .he holds the hammer to the wood for a small fraction of time to prevent the Back bouncing or the opposite reaction .it’s not about the hammer .it’s the way he tricked

The primary purpose of the leather is to keep it from denting my furniture pieces when I am assembling them, although it does likely absorb some of the swing also.
