One thing I don’t like about this vid “this is my type set by far the best type set out of print, but I linked a close second in the description” By far the best but this is a close second That’s the worst I could find it’s not even a big deal like one sentence that says something about how good your vids are

New here. Collecting coins and bills from the past and present AND from around the world as well. I'm a 37 year old Army Combat veteran who got Leukemia while serving over seas. I plan on leaving my collection to my niece when I pass. She's a baby now, and if I die I it's something she can look through and think of me.

Silverpicker to answer your question about the 3 cent piece. The nickel 3 cent piece was commissioned due to the public hoarding the silver trime and instead using Indian Head cents and 2cent pieces for every day commerce. The reason the mint continued to produce the silver trimes durring this overlap period is because citizens in the western states were opposed to clad coinage, much like they were opposed to paper currencies. Thus the silver trime still had a use out west, a small use, but enough for the government to warrent continued production in small numbers.

I just started my coin collection a while back and my first old silver coin was an 1853 seated liberty dime. I really like it and my coin collection has grown a little more to a whopping 6 silver coins. I also have a ton of misc. copper and world coins. In case you were wondering, my silver coins are the 1853 half dime, a 1964 washington quarter, a 1898 barber quarter, a 1907 O half dollar, a 1964 roosevelt dime, and a 1922 peace dollar!

I had to start my type set over several decades ago when I discovered coins not slabbed (professionally graded) were practically worthless. I have a "slabbed" type set. I traded bullion and cashed in some bitcoins years ago to finish it. The last one purchased was a 1792 half dime VF. I was so proud but none of my kids showed the slightest interest in the subject! You rarely hear it but coin collecting is one of the most profitable hobbies in existence. My dad saved silver quarters for me and I cashed them in for $1400. He thought I was nuts but I bought a 1909 D VDB for $110, an 1857 Flying Eagle (MS 60) for $180 and a 1793 (AU 50) large cent for $1,050, Best investment I ever made though I would never sell.

I would guess the reason they did not discontinue the silver trime was similar to why they overproduced the Morgans for awhile (though the Morgan's sat in vaults during that span), which would have been lobbying by the silver mining industry. Probably there were silver lobbyists keeping it in production.

The arrows by the date showed that the amount of silver was reduced from that of previous years. Silver prices had exceeded the value of the coins, so they were hoarded and speculators were sending them overseas for meltdown. Since the silver content was less, people tended to use them more in circulation instead of hoarding them, which was the point. The result for us is that not many survived in better conditions eg. XF+. 1853 was just a warm up for 1965 as far as debasement goes. I agree with you on the last page. You could always dump the last page and replace it with the gold page. Now that would be nice.

The 3 cent coin was done so that people could buy postage stamps, which were 3 cents at the time. They switched to the nickel blend because as you pointed out people were hoarding the silver because at that time the silver in the coins was worth more than the coins themselves. I believe that postage had either gone up or down and the government began to put less silver in the coins so it was no longer possible to collect silver coins and ship them overseas to cash in on the silver. The arrows were used to mark the coins and their silver content. They were again used in the 1870s. To again mark the difference in the silver content. The standing liberty quarter was changed because of the puritan mindset. Libertys right breast was exposed and it caused a bit of an uproar.

I'm building this exact same collection. I purchased only the best, or best I can afford up to the Dollar Coins. Had to settle for MS 50 or maybe a couple 63s? Still need the 4th and 5th coins on the last page.

maybe part of the reason they specified 1/100 on old currency, was because the UK has 240 pence in a pound, as opposed to the US having 100 cents in a dollar, so people that may still be used to british money wouldnt get confused?

Could someone answer a question for me? I have a lot of Washington pre65 quarters. At least half of them are VF-20 grade or above which makes then a few dollars over melt a piece. Shouldn't I place them in a book for resale? Melt is only $5 a quarter right now, it seems like it would be worth my time to grade them and separate them out.

At 14:10, on the Standing Liberty quarters (Type 1 and Type 2), you missed a key difference: The Type 1 lady has one bare breast exposed (the one opposite of the shield - see i.redd.it/fwdgw03qe3a01.jpg). The Type 2 had the chain mail shirt added. Entertaining video, though - and good work on the collection!
