[Question] I have filled the N-400.
I changed my name on the N-400.
So now, I changed my mind and changed my family name."
So okay. On the paperwork where you're filing for Citizenship,
you said that you wanted to change your name. Now you regret
it and you want to go back?
Well, that's no problem.
When you're at your interview for Naturalization or Citizenship,
they ask you again,
"Are you sure you want to change your name?"
You say,
"Yes." If you still don't want the old name, you want
another name, not the one written on the Form N-400,
you could even request that one to be changed. So at the
interview, it's very flexible.
From what I've seen, I've never had a problem.
You just say, "Oh I want to go back and not change
it. I want to change my name to something else." You do whatever
you want to do.
Now one thing you have to be mindful for is that not
every USCIS field office does name changes.
For example, in Los Angeles, they're pretty good
at doing name changes.
And the reason is because when you do your old ceremony to
change your name, you have to have an officer of the court
there that could confirm the name change. But in a place like
San Francisco, they don't, even though the form says you could
change your name.
Once you go to the interview, they'll say, "Actually, we don't
do name changes here."
So you got to look to see what your local office does.
I'm not familiar with every procedure at every office, but
maybe contact local attorneys or whatever.
But the reality is, you could change your name at the interview. You
could fix that up, but not every field office will accept name
changes in general.
They might just say you have to go to court later to do it on
your own.

I requested to change my name on Naturalization form (I just wanted to remove the hyphenated part, go back to my maiden name while I'm still married because it's too long and hard to pronounce) and during my interview, the officer convinced me not to change it. He told me I have to go to Social Security Office, etc. And I took the oath and now I regret not changing it, because turns out I STILL have to go to SS office! He didn't tell me that. This would be a perfect time for me to change my name since I don't have much under my name, no driver's licence, no American passport, not currently working, just my bank account. He scrwd me over. Now, going to court to change my last name back to my maiden name is expensive and complicated process in NJ. I feel so sad and angry that I listened to the man. Thought he's gonna mess up my naturalization process if I don't agree with him..

There was a typo on my name change form( wich I didin't notice) until 2 weeks after I took the oat( I was to excited and happy) that I didin't pay attention. I went to my local court house to get it fixed. But I was told that only USCIS can fix my problem. Is that correct or is there another way?

What if I was asked to change my name at the age of 16? I kept my name as is. However, USCIS added a hyphen in between my two last names, which has been a nightmare to deal with in employment, accounts, doctor, etc. I’m now 31 years old. I lost my naturalization certificate in 2013. I want to get a replacement but I’m not sure what I will need to get it. If I mention the name issue, can the fee be waived? I would really appreciate a reply and any tips. Thank you so much!! 🙏 P.s. the only form of ID I have is my drivers license, social security card, and bills, vehicle registration, voter ID card, etc. I don’t have a passport. I have my foreign birth certificate but I’m not sure if that will help.

Hello Sir. I’m currently living in the Philippines as an American Citizen. I was born and raised here and my both parents are Filipinos. I am applying for dual citizenship to avoid penalties for over staying. I submitted all documents including my birth certificate and school records and US naturalization certificate. However, since ive changed my name, they were asking for a copy DECREE CHANGE OF NAME or else I’m not eligible for dual citizenship. Unfortunately, I have not records of DECREE CHANGE OF NAME in Brooklyn Court and even to INS in Manhattan NYC. According to them. I lost my old Filipino passport which they were asking a a proof of my old name before. • My question is: where and how can I get a copy of DECREE CHANGE OF NAME in NYC or somewhere in the US so I can be a dual citizen. Godbless
