    "Eet" is the backspace button on a type writer that allows you to go back and fix a mistake. Instead of wishing you could fix a mistake, reflect and learn from it. I love this song!

    What do you do when you forget the words to a song? You hum. She like's humming. This is like an Ode to creativity and her humming which lead to her writing songs and to J. D. Salinger who is all about doing your own thing for yourself whether anyone likes it or not. It worked out for her and Vonnegut. Vonnegut agrees however he did say "Write to just one person and no one else" and I think he meant one person other than yourself. Notice that her piano is her typewriter and the over-sized man's wrist watch. I can see why she connects with Salinger though. I totally could see Salinger though before I knew she liked his book 9 Stories.

    December 2010, 15-year-old me was preparing for a bone marrow transplant as the last step in treatment for acute myeloid leukemia and I stumble across this song on iTunes and I become obsessed with it, listening to it constantly. It just got me "It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song" = being diagnosed with cancer "You're using your headphones to drown out your mind" = dealing with treatment. This song is what I would tell everyone to listen to if they want a taste of what was going on in my head. This summer I was out driving and this song came on, I hadn't listened to it in years, as soon as it started I was sobbing. I simply cannot describe what this song means to me.

    The typewriter is her instrument, and so is her piano. I don't think this song has some esoteric meaning. It's simply about loss; or about having something that's so familiar taken away from you. You're in the dark without it, depressed and awkwardly trying your best to get it back. "It was so easy and the words so sweet You can't remember, you try to feel the beat"

    EDIT: Welp, it was a myth all along! Haha ORIGINAL POST: I've always loved this song, but I never knew the significance of the word "eet". All this time I just thought it was a playful sound she uses in the song, but today I found out that it's an actual button on a traditional typewriter (I grew up with an electric one) that allows someone to type over other words in an attempt to fix errors (but not actually erase them). That just totally blows my mind and I have a better appreciation for the song.

    I absolutely adore this song. I had completely forgotten all about it for years, & then on one of my hardest weeks I’ve had all year learning that someone I deeply care about might not have long left to live, it echoed ever so slightly in the background of my mind, & with the help of my older sister, we remembered it from when we were younger & would sing it together on our car rides after we moved out together from our parents house. As soon I heard it play just now, I had to sit down on the ground of my kitchen to sing it with my eyes closed. This song never fails me, it catches me everytime. It’s like my souls bestfriend. I am crying, but I am so incredibly grateful. ❤️‍🩹

    The meaning of this song, is amazing. It's like, depression and forgetting how good happiness felt, so you just have to backtrack your life and start over to make it better. It's so clever using a typewriter for this song. This song, is so good.

    Eet describes a world of nonpermanent memory in which anything can be forgotten. A world of obliteration in which the parts of you that remember certain qualities about yourself can eet. They can be taken away to your dreams and this is synonymous with memory loss because they do not return in your dreams and are assumed to be "eeten" by the black void in your memory. But they are simply stores forever barely outside your grasp.

    She doesn't need to be half naked in her videos, she doesn't need any kind of electro beat in her songs: this is why I love Regina Spektor. She's just amazing like this: she's gorgeous and her songs are full of love, pain, sadness, but even hope, mistake-forgivin'. I love so much her style, I grew with her music and I'll die listening to her songs... Just go on like this, Regina! ^^ My days are full of your music! *u*

    Regina Spektor: as a kid I hadn’t known she was such a masterpiece. The lyrics, the text painting, it’s so creative. And as an adult now, these words mean something completely different. I feel that I’m with her when she was in her 20s. I’m trying to feel beat…

  • @rakokatakantu
    @rakokatakantu5 жыл бұрын

    "When she describes forgetting the words to a favorite song, its her way of saying she (or the character she’s signing as) has forgetting/losing enjoyment in things dear to her. They’re becoming depressed, and their sudden realization surprises them, since things like music were important facets of their lives, something simple and easy to fall back on, but they now can’t seem to enjoy things as easily. They (the chatacter) are losing control over their method of escape from daily life, and they want to try to find the “beat” again, or more accurately, their rhythm/way of life they had followed so nicely before. Eet is the backspace of a typewriter, but it didn’t delete letters, it wrote over them. The making character in the song can’t go back in time and erase mistakes/signs of depression/regrets, but they can cover them up. Then they give background to how important music was to them. It was a method of escapism, a getaway from daily life. It what they would hide behind. Now they wish that could still be enough to escape the sadness they fel, but it’s not, so as they try to remember how to enjoy things again, they force themselves to move forward. when it comes to the whole “stealing and children fighting outside the window” part, I get a little confused. But I think it’s contrasting a more serious situation of possible planned theft to children being selfish by taking someone else’s turn. It does this to show that samilar problems often exist in youth like they do in adulthood, just usually on a smaller scale, even thought it may feel just as big. This expresses a yearning for these simpler times where whenever you were frustrated you could cry in public and, while not necessarily approved, was more acceptable at a young age. and some of the words repeat here, emphasizing the sense of loss they feel. basically, they are falling into a depression, or are just realizing that they have been depressed all along, losing enjoyment in things like music, and they want to go back to how things used to be. they try to cover up any signs/mistakes and move forward, all while wistfully reminiscing of when things used to be simplier." ""eet" is an old backspace key on a typewriter. Rather than erasing, it allowed a typist to go back to where the previous letter was, and type over it. Considering Regina is typing on a typewriter in the video, and pressing the "eet" key, maybe she's hoping for a backspace in life? To re-do parts of her life, or get back to the way she felt before? For me, this is a song about sadness and depression, losing your happiness and your faith, your sense of being. Suddenly the world has changed, and you can't work out why - YOU have changed, you can't remember who you were, and you're trying as hard as you might to get it back: eet, eet, eet." "‘Eet’ is an adjective used to describe a feeling equivalent to forgetting the words of your favorite song (as mentioned in the very beginning of the song, ‘it’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song’) the song is mostly telling the story of losing feeling, becoming numb. ‘he opens a window, just to feel the chill’ it basically repeats lyrics that all lead towards the idea of not remembering being happy, and losing those happy memories/feelings." "It/Eet refers to passage of time. First she relates it to favorite songs. Second verse she relates it to aging and procrastination. Then she mentions humans using music to make it go by faster. In third verse, she describes a human consumed in a morally ambiguous situation, but he becomes aware of passage of time through his memories. He hears children playing. It “rhymes” with Eet, the key on old keyboards, as described in the other answer." That's what I found. That's what it means.
