When I visited LA in the early 2000's, I ended up on Crenshaw on a Sunday. It is (was) true, how they had those car shows. I saw some very nice looking low riders, straight out of your favorite West Coast music video. And I saw some very scary dudes driving those cars. I saw similar, but worse, guys in Oakland on International, at an empty gas station. It was a long time since I saw these kind of vacant facial expressions coupled with outfits that were 3/4 of the way to felony attire, on the East Coast. They looked like homicides were never not on the table. I made my white girlfriend get out and fill the car up. Hey, the worst they would do to her (empirically observed, of course) is try to get her number. That "hey my brother" jive wasn't going to cut it with these fools. Then once they start down that path, it's a moot point what happens to the passengers. So yeah, I saved her life. She still hasn't thanked me either.
