    Firebirdjimbo, what some producers don't get is that we need the complete possible how to do things in order to appreciate them, do them, learn them, understand them. There's a lot going on in this universe and some of us haven't got the training for example on how to weld, or taken apart an engine. Takes our time and necessity to do things with our own hands and make them the best possible way!

    @27:00 you mention the height difference of the metal deck vs the wooden deck. I just did a similar project and instead of altering/ removing metal to lower the factory points at the rear of the trailer, I raised the metal deck. Removing metal at the rear of the trailer weakens the already weakest part of the trailer. My solution was to use 2x3 angle iron cut to the same width of the crossmembers. Then turn them to flat on top and weld them along the vertical edge to the original crossmembers' vertical side. That greatly increased the rigidity of the trailer overall. There was a noticeable difference when stepping in the middle of an original crossmember vs stepping on the modified crossmember with the angle welded to it. Removing metal from any trailer is generally the wrong way to solve a problem. The original builders usually make trailer with the bare minimums to start.

    Hey, Andrew. I know this is an older video, but when you patch C-channel or an I beam, the fish plate that goes on the web section should be diamond-shaped, not square. This keeps the same break from happening a few inches down on your vertical weld line.

    The old school trick with frame plates that I was taught was, if you don't fish plate, then don't weld the verticals, That said, I usually fish plate. The big thing that usually seems to pop up is the way the trailer had a weak point. A lot of the time the break is at the end of a re-enforcement as was showed, Too much flex in one spot

    Here’s a useful tidbit of information. If you mix a couple of cups of blue Dawn dishwashing liquid in with water and put it in a spray bottle it works every bit as good if not a little better than wasp spray. It kills them instantly the same way plus if you have a lot of Ness you can mix a lot of it and hook it up to a garden sprayer and just nail them all. The cool thing about it is if you’re gonna be working in there you can spray it on there and it’s just soap and water it will kill all the wasps just the same but you’re not gonna have all those poisons and crap and the fumes to deal with. If there are areas you can’t read you can just make a crap load of it and soak them all. I learned that a couple years ago and I live in the woods we deal with wasps all the time and it works perfectly.

    Yeah but he cut the diamond plate to big. No reason for it to fit snug like that. 1/4" lap on both sides would have been plenty and it would drop right in. Also he leveled the trailer before clamping the broken area, so unless he releveled it it is too high now. Using the smaller lights for the rear "ID lights" he wouldnt have had to cut so much from the frame. Still watched the whole thing like it was a newly released summer blockbuster.

    The old over-center binders have a place to pin / wire them secure (they do work if used correctly). Their negative point is the fact they can be either loose or over tight - lack of adjustment... Ratchet binders are the way to go - also if the lever is left correctly, they can't loosen in transit...

You will recall he originally got the gray one as a parts truck for the one that got crushed with the fallen tree, but it was better to use the parts truck as it was. We might end up seeing the same thing here, as the red truck may be in better shape(?). Either way, it will be wonderful if we can come along for the ride with his projects! Thank you, Andrew! 😀 👍

  • @ShaneZettelmier
    @ShaneZettelmier3 жыл бұрын

    I used to keep a milk crate on my trailer. It was a pretty heavy duty one with the metal rings and it probably wasn’t strong enough but it fit perfectly under the dovetail so I could just throw it under there and it would keep the trailer from lifting my truck. I would put feet on the ramp folded up when you lifted the ramps but I had a piece that drops down when you set the ramps down that would hold the back up so it doesn’t lift very far. Love you thing I have it put on mine was a forerunner so the crate worked but I’m guessing the track loader or the forklift is probably a lot heavier. Some flip down Jax on the back of the trailer would probably work pretty well too. I use those quick tensioners but I’ve also got nylon straps on mine with Velcro so once that handles down and it’s bound, I can wrap the strap around two or three times and the Velcro holds it closed pretty well. I use them on one side and then a ratchet binder on the other to make it good and tight. The trailer looks great and I think going with the diamond plate was definitely the right choice.

    If you don't have a level surface to reference (and even if you do) pull a string from corner to corner or diagonally. String doesn't lie and no mistakes because the frame was bent or out of level or your level was bad. As far as cutting sheet material you could also use a track cutter with either a oxy/acetylene torch or a plasma torch, or a metal cutting circular saw with the appropriate blade for the material you are cutting. You can't (or shouldn't) use a circular saw intended for wood as the RPM is too high. The metal cutting circ saws are available in cordless so they can be used without AC mains power, but the corded models are powerful and can cut thick steel. We used one on a job to cut large WF beams with a 3/4" thick flange. When flexing the plate to get it installed on the bed use a hydraulic jack or you could even rig up a hand operated screw jack in place of the dunnage and use a thinner tool like a piece of 1/8 plate on the ends to force it under the channel.

    ANDREW IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ THIS I really wanted to share this with you, and it will be a breakthrough of understanding on projects like these. In a word: SANDBLASTING, and I don't mean Mickey Mouse blasting but rather using one of those CAT motor blasters with a 4" nozzle get it done somewhere, or rebuild an old one to add to your arsenal. Okay here is my story. I had a body shop that started with nothing and grew to be the largest in all of Western Delaware County out of over 250 shops. I started doing restorations. T Bird products was sending me stripped down classic T Birds 55, 56, 57 that were the shell on the frame with suspension and all intact. I took it to Broyles Refinishers and had them sand blast all of the internal parts, door jambs, engine compartment, suspension, frame etc. The whole thing came back like new silver metal. Any rust holes were now a solid piece of metal ready for welding with zero prep time. All I had to do was spend an hour blowing the sand out of everything, and then I used Dupont Metal prep which would acid etch the metal so it would never rust again. Blow it out, and let it dry, preferably overnight. Then go in and prime everything real well. Now you are ready to do repairs, welding (yes lightly grind weld to surfaces) but you are dealing with something that has ZERO prep time, and it makes a BRAND NEW piece of metal/the whole trailer looks new again. It may cost a few hundred dollars to have it done, but the time saved, and the final product will blow minds. The value of the trailer will skyrocket which will way more than pay for itself in what little it costs, and the time you save not cutting away rusted metal is incredible. So for example you leave the rims with it, tires on and everything, and they blast both sides which for an industrial blaster is about 60 seconds worth of a pass, and the rim now looks like it just came out of the factory. You prime and paint and it looks like a new rim. This alone will take your entire operation to a new level. Not that it needs fixing. I am blown away by how great you are at fixing and so much more. This is the one element that you need. Sandblasting. Now a couple of tips. Before delivering a frame with suspension and or trailer to the blaster be sure to steam/pressure wash all of the grease off. A spot of dried up grease will stop sand particles in their tracks. Leave the suspension completely assembled. When they are done blasting it, if you really want to show off, disassemble it putting new rubber bushings, nuts, and washers on it after you prime and paint the parts. When someone looks at it, it looks exactly like all brand new suspension. Any part you had them once blasted, if you primed it, and put it in a box with paper wrappings, it is indistinguishable from brand new. Just about zero effort to get it that way. All of the work is in the prep time, and with this it is ideally done for you. Get handy with the metal prep. New metal even sanded has minute particles of metal that even the humidity in the air will cause to turn into seeds of rust that get planted under the finish, and eventually will create a sheet of rust, with flaking paint. It takes about zero time to use metal prep liquid. I like the Dupont stuff that does not require you to wash it off with water. Tell you what. Try this with just a few small parts, or maybe one shovel that goes on the end of the tractor and you will be totally sold. Look at this video starting at frame #41 to get an idea of what I am talking about. kzread.info/dash/bejne/iYSVzq6FnaS4Z7Q.html This is less work, not more. Thank you Andrew for having such an incredible channel.

    The major reason for crossing the chains is to prevent chain shock, especially on a sprung load like a car. When you corner chain a car via car frame to bed, as the trailer goes over bumps and swells, the car suspension dips and the chains go slack then slam tight as the car goes back up. This slamming can break chains, buckles, and rip open the keyholes in the car frame. Crossing the chains makes them act more like panhard bars by transferring that bounce energy to the sides. Cross chaining is more about centering a load and controlling movement and less about binding a load tight to the bed. A general rule would be: Totally rigid loads like cargo or machinery that has no springing at the anchor points can be corner chained. Vehicles or anything with pneumatic tires (air filled tires are springs, too!) gets cross chained.

    I'm an Electrician with some friendly advice... Ask yourself, 'what do car companies use?' They do not use the chassis for ground any more, they run a separate ground wire (which is exactly why your lights come with two wires). Never use solder because a proper-sized crimped compression terminal actually fuses the metals together with the lowest resistance. Heating with solder actually ruins the crimp. Stay away from cheap HF connectors. Get them from a real electrical store (or Grainger's). Consider running a length of conduit the length of your trailer for mechanical protection and good organization. You can weld rigid or thinwall (EMT) in place and blow holes for branch wires (as long as the edges are smooth). Or, PVC electrical conduit may be used. I personally like plastic because it's a natural insulator, it won't rust and wires cannot weld themselves to the inside. When the conduit is in place and finished, pull your wires and connect them.

Man, what a great attitude toward working with all manner of stuff. The tractor parade kind of good citizen, kind to small animals. I just lost it with the drone footage at the end. 40:33. Andrew. When you drill metal, use wd 40 or any other spray oil lubricant. Prolongs still bid life and makes it much easier to drill. Way much easier. Even plain water works if you don’t have the oil on hand.

    Nice video, great to see a young guy switched on like you are. Everything you did throughout that rebuild emphasised the importance of safety. Corner cutting to save time takes lives and leaves people physically impaired. I loved how you dealt with the electrics too and even went to the 9th degree to have labels printed with critical information regarding axle weight and max carrying weight. You are very skilled in everything you do, guys like you will never be hungry because you know how to get it done and people will always want to pay for that skill. I wish you all the very best Andrew. Good luck from Ireland.

    I didn't pack my bearings like everyone claims you should on my trailer. So many comments saying the trailer wouldn't make it 5 miles. Towed it over 1000 miles before I took it apart to show that it literally still looked brand new. It’s crazy how people just take something that’s relatively common knowledge and spew it as gospel without ever having tried anything else.

    I love your videos man😍 One thing though. I notice you never use cutting oil when boring metal holes. That will speed up your drilling quite a lot and save your bit. And I also noticed when you grinded that drill bit it turned bluish. That means it's losing its hardness. Take fewer passes and dip it in water to keep it cool. Makes your bit more sharp and keeps it sharp. Just a tip☺️
