Even experienced pilots get it wrong. I had to change a refuel probe as the forward section stayed on the KC135 tanker.
I've also been told I need a little bit more consistency in how I get the probe into the basket.
Hasn't he practised this manoeuvre in a simulator before doing this?

no refeuling is ever the same and if you have only done it in a sim, getting in the plane and knowing if you screw up, you and 6 other people could die is a hell of a kicker
