Yo dude, I can't thank you enough for this vid !! My Dad has cancer and is in pretty bad shape. His house is falling apart around him and I'm doing everything I possibly can to keep him in it. It's where he wants to be. His main sewer line recently backed up and I had to dig up his whole front yard to fix it. He was devastated at the condition his yard was left in so I landscaped his whole front yard for him. Well don't you know, 2 days later his fridge died. He was overwhelmed and extremely depressed at the same time thinking he was going to have to buy a new fridge. Thanks to you and your video, I was able to fix it for him. The relief that came over him was awesome. So again, thanks to you and your video, you helped me and my dad out tremendously. You have no idea. I wish there was something I could do in return for you helping us out. I can't thank you enough. God bless ya man and take care Dan.

Thank you so much for your video!! I cannot believe I reached the age of 60 withouit knowing that my refrigerator goes into defrost 3 times a day!! I put some fresh groceries in my fridge and I decided to turn my dial to a bit colder and nothing happened, and then I tried to push it to even colder...still nothing! So I decided to sit down and have some pudding and found your video. Just at the end of it as I was deciding that i could, in fact, follow your guidelines...my fridge came on....it must have been in defrost!!! What a relief as money is really tight these days. Thank you again so much. Now I know what to do if it ever does really stop working!!

Thank you so much, I've been so upset and overwhelmed all morning, because my refrigerator fan wouldn't work, and my brother and father just kept telling me to vacuum underneath it and figure it out myself... it's been so hot all week... I just want some cold water!!!!!!!!!! .... I stuck the screwdriver in and twisted it and it came back on.... Seriously, in tears, right now, because I'm so relieved.

Woke up this morning to a dripping refrigerator. No compressor, no fan but lights were working. I cleaned the coils and assumed the compressor had overheated and was looking for A reset button (if there even is one). I searched for "refrigerator not cooling" and found this video. Checking the thermostat and the continuity were not in my realm of handyman expertise. I turned the thermostat screw like Bill said and every thing kick on. What a relief. I'm off to the parts store for a new themostat. Thanks a bunch Bill! PS: My wife said I'm a Superman but I said I'm much more - I'm a REPAIRMAN!

FOLLOW-UP: I may just be a lower case "repairman". I had not turned the thermostat screw but the defroster timer screw. When the refrigerator came to life after turning the screw, I assumed the defrost timer was bad and replaced it. However, the refrigerator is still not cooling and the freezer is not freezing, i.e., everything is still getting warmer even though I hear the fan running. I can't say if the compressor is running. I did the continuity check on the thermostat and the test was good since there was a beep from the tester when the temperature setting was in an ON position (1 through 6) and there was an "open line" (OL) when the temperature setting was in the OFF position. For the moment, I am at a loss.

Paul Martin Put your hand on top of the compressor, if it's warm or hot it's running. If the compressor is turned on an off quickly, it will not fire up right away. Leave the fridge unplugged for 30 minutes then plug it in. I don't know how long the fridge was running when you say it was still not cooling. Let me know how you make out!

Bill Newberry Here is what I did before reading your email above. I watched your video on testing the refrigerator compressor. After unplugging the refrigerator and accessing the compressor area, I checked the continuity on each of the three prongs where the relay plugs into the compressor with an ohm tester. The top middle prong was giving readings all over the place and in the hundreds. I thought my connection between the tester prong and the compressor prong must be weak so I rub the tester prong back and forth across the top middle prong and got a reading in the range mentioned in your compressor video. The top middle prong appeared to have a dark, crusty, corrosion that I cleaned off with a small wire brush. I reinstalled the relay, plugged in the refrigerator and the compressor started humming (like normal I assume). Within an hour or so, water stopped dripping from the freezer and the next morning everything in the freezer was solidly frozen. I think my original suspicion that the defrost timer was bad may have coincidentally been when the refrigerator was doing a normal defrost mode but since everything was thawing, and I had not checked or heard the compressor, I assumed the defrost timer was bad. I replaced the defrost timer and still had no cooling. Then I went to your test the compressor video which lead me to the crusty compressor prong. So do you think the problem was the crusty prong (which is located just under the evaporation tray so it is a humid area) or is the compressor on borrowed time? I just texted my son and he said the refrigerator is still working and this is about 18 hours after I discovered the corrosion and cleaned up the prong and the refrigerator started working again.

My fridge was not defrosting. I had a warranty repair man out and after diagnosis he ordered a part. But then after he left my refrigerator didn't come back on at all. He said it would "restart" in 20 minutes. It was after 5PM on a Friday night. He had, from my assumption, put it in defrost and left it there. After an hour I was very upset. Finally I went to the internet. Watching your video I took a flat plier and inserted it as instructed and "voila" the unit came back on. I can't thank you enough. My refrigerator will remain on life support until the new part arrives. My food and sanity survive.

Fixed a fridge a couple of days ago. I checked the defrost timer after watching this video. I got a screwdriver, turned the timer and sure enough the fridge works again. Apparently the timer got stuck in defrost. It works fine now. It turns off to defrost like it's supposed to then turns back on after about 30 min. This video saved me from having to call a repair person.

Thank you so much! You are very good because you don't babble on about non-important issues. You get right to the point but do not miss a thing. I used your video and knew my timer did not work. I ordered it first, and installed it as you suggested. The heating rod went on, I heard the sizzling when the water dropped on the rod, the thermostat stopped it when the frost was off the coils, and the timer kicked back into cooling mode in 20 minutes. Thanks again!

This is good info. I did as instructed, and then disconnected the control to check for continuity with a voltage tester. Got no reading, but just to make sure I took a piece of 14 ga wire and put a jumper between the two leads (unplug first!). Then, I plugged the unit in and the compressor started running, so it's clearly the temp control. 11 year old Amana. $70 for the new part.

Amy Tsang boy I have the same problem I don't find any air flow in the back of the fridge coming from the freezer into the refrigerator there's something wrong with my spinning motor fan in the freezer. maybe my 16-year old fridge the fan may be slowing down therefore it's hardly a trace of air blowing through the air duct in the fact so my temperature is going up in the fridge specially doing this heat wave the past 3 days New York go to the other videos free my fun in answer to your question it may be ice accumulating in the air flow duct or your fan may not be blowing as fast as it used to. so check the other videos on KZread with the same question "cold freezer warm fridge"

This video was dead on what I needed to figure out what was happening as my fridge non-freezer section would be tend to be warm while the freezer seemed to be going thru thaw freeze type cycles. From prior researching I had started to think was frost build up/melt cycle in the auto defrost section located behind the freezer. But from this video I learned to test the DEFROST TIMER. Sure enough I did as shown in this video, turning via screwdriver, and the compressor and evaporator kicked right on. Boom, problem identified, stuck in defrost cycle neediing new defrost timer.. Bill, Thank you for your video. Very concise and logical in order in which to test things. Have book marked it for future reference. Much appreciated.

Thanks Bill. Video and explanation very clear. Estate Whirlpool refrigerator/freezer hardly cooling after a few issues with puddles on the floor. Is it possible the combination of both these issues means a bad defrost timer? Previously called repairman for the water issues. He initially stated that I must have "dropped ice" or "spilled some water" without noticing. Duh! On the 2nd call, he stated the water catcher was crooked and the water must have spilled out. He blamed me for that too and said I must have "moved" the refrigerator. I was not charged for the 2nd visit because I complained to his wife. His visit fee is $50 plus parts/ labor. ^_^ At least now I am more informed and can ask questions and see what a repair person is checking or not checking i.e. check coils in freezer for frost build up and / or possibly bad defrost timer.

Hi Bill. I've had ongoing issues with an old used Kenmore fridge that looks very similar to the one behind you. The fridge and freezer have been cooling, but not getting cold enough. Somedays it seems to work slightly better than others, but neither ever get as cold as they should. At first I tried simply unplugging the fridge, taking out the panels in the freezers and getting rid of all the ice. Several days went by and the fridge/freezer still weren't getting cold enough, so I replaced the defrost timer with a new one I ordered. The new defrost timer seems to be working properly, but the fridge/freezer still aren't fully cooling and the frost ice in the freezer piled up once again. I'm currently melting the ice out of the freezer again, hoping that once I do that with a new defrost timer in, it will work better this time. I'm not experienced as a handyman, or with appliance repair, so I'm using advice from videos like this and trying anything out... The fridge is running properly and not spending too much time in defrost, so I don't think the thermostat is the problem, but could it be?... The coils are behind the fridge, and they are clean and look good (no dust/ice build up). Not sure if the root of the problem is in the freezer or the fridge and I'm kind of stumped on what to check next... The fan seems to be working because there is cold air blowing in both the freezer and fridge, just neither getting cold enough... Sorry to the long, confused message, just trying to see if you have a pointer on what to check or try next. Thanks!
