I’m in the UK and just got a gorgeous pink Cymbidium, so your advice is perfect. We have a cool conservatory so great for winter, then outside in Spring.

Rachel, I purchased a beautiful yellow and red lipped cymbidium about 5 years ago and it would not rebloom. I placed it outdoors, divided, no luck and was about ready to throw it away. I came across this video and after following your instructions I have 4 gorgeous spikes which are now in full bloom. After spending the summer outdoors, moving inside, fertilizing with bloom food, I rearranged my spare bedroom to place the cymbidium by the south window and purchased a plant light. I closed my heat registers and even opened the top pane of the window up and down as weather changed to keep the temperature above 50F and below 65F. I am thrilled with the results!!!!

I understand your sense of satisfaction in coaxing that cym into bloom. Cymbidiums are so very beautiful that it's worth going to some trouble to get them to bloom. May you enjoy it enormously!

Thankyou very interesting my flowers are nearly past now on my Cymbidium.Its been in my Lounge since November.

I have cymbidiums for years and they do well mine do drop into the low 2c in winter

Cymbidiums always remind me of living in San Francisco. Many people grow them around the entryway to their homes. They thrive there outdoors year round as the cool climate is almost perfect for them. The ones exhibited at the local orchid shows there never failed to amaze me. I had a few in my collection at the time that did fairly well but were nothing like the experts gems. They are not as ubiquitous here in San Diego though there are many enthusiastic growers in the area. ~ Thanks as always, John.

Thanks, John, and the San Francisco experience of cymbidiums sounds wonderful - a bit like the Madeira one in my photos. There are some amazing cyms out there but my three big ones are just ordinary noids as they stem from a very long time ago.

Great video, thank you so much! Just in the process of buying an ice cascade, so will keep it in the hall window which is cooler until all the flowers are out! It has 3 spike on it and I’d have blasted the lot without this information. Thank you again 👍👍👍😊😊😊

Thanks to your video, I am finally getting flower spikes in my Cymbidium! A bit early, but I am in Norway and it is already 9C during nights sometimes. It has made my plant to accelerate the flowering process. Last year it did not bloom, the plant was quite slow during summer and when it was cold and the pseudobulbs were mature, it wasn't possible to give it colder temperatures (zero and below zero). So I think the plant has adjusted itself to nordic conditions and decided to start the flower spikes earlier. I guess if all goes as planned, I will have full blooms between November and December! Christmas treats! Thanks!

Same situation here! It's after the first year of caring for them in the garden, fertilizing, I hope I did all I had to do... One of them has 3 "thingees" and another 8 !! I hope at leas one is a flower spike :-( but I don't know how to recognize them because I did not grow this type of orchid before

Thank you for this video! I definitely needed the info. I have one mini cymbidium that has suffered in my care, which I've dubbed "the cymbidium that wouldn't die". Fortunately, it still has not died, though I only have two pseudobulbs left. Hopefully these care tips will help it to become "the cymbidium that definitely will not die"!

Thank you for this detailed video!! I will refer to this information come spring and summer when I hope to get some healthy Cymbidiums to enjoy outdoors. I can't seem to find detailed help, though, on what is required to nurse a neglected/abused Cymbidium back to health, especially at this time of year. I am new to orchid growing (since August) and have 12 orchids so far that include Phals, Paphs, Oncidium types, and a Cattleya. I just acquired a large Cymbidium in a huge pot in dire need of rescue. All the roots were rotted (none left). All but one medium PB, one small PB and one immature PB growth out of more than a dozen were still alive-the rest were bone dry hollow and so I removed them and cleaned the plant up about 10 days ago. The remaining leaves look good. I don't expect the plant to flower any time soon. I just hope to keep it alive for now and to encourage it to grow some new roots! For now, I have it suspended in a tall narrow vase with the base of the plant just barely touching about a cm of water in the bottom. Questions: 1) Should I put any fertilizer or nutrients in the water? (Or should this be bark/soil or sphagnum moss instead of water? The rest of my orchids are in s/h and doing well.) 2) How much light should I be giving it right now? 3) What temperature should I keep it at right now while I'm nursing it back to health? I'm aware it is early Dec, I live in Seattle with outdoor temps currently between 35°-55°F, and indoors 65°-79°F, with 45%-60% humidity in my orchid growing corner. I can increase humidity and artificial growing light indoors to a certain degree, but it is pretty dreary dim outside these days, so the window actually provides less light than the grow lights do alone. What does your gifted and knowledgeable Unglamorous Gardenership suggest?

Hello Lorri and congratulations on your newly acquired plants. I think you are doing the right thing with your cym and like your idea of suspending it over water. I would give it slightly less light than normal (east or west facing window) and keep it warm (indoors) while it is in recovery and regrowing its roots. Don't bother with fertiliser. The plant has enough to contend with at the moment. Good luck!

Great advice - they were one of the first orchids I grew and still find them pleasingly easy. Mine (SE England) go outdoors in April - in full sun and only watered when it rains or rarely if I remember - and come in around mid November (or a bit earlier if spiking) and then go straight into a centrally heated room in a south facing bay window (though it's a Victorian house so centrally heated is still quite cold! I don't think it matters once they're spiking though). Since mine stay outdoors in the cold they tend not to get far beyond the early stages so no danger of bud blast.

I see. Yes, since you leave your cyms out until November you don't need to worry too much about cool rooms.It sounds like you have their routine down to a fine art. Interesting about having them in full sun. Thanks for sharing.

I'm still a newbie! Not really considered the difficulties in moving plants in spike as I've not had any problems yet. It's just what I've done since I don't have much room for house plants so they stay out as long as possible - luckily it seems to work for me. I use crappy garden centre orchid mix too by the way.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, I didn't watch this soon enough. I had 4 spikes with flower buds getting ready to open up when I moved my plants indoors due to the impending cold wave, back outdoors when it warmed up, and back indoors when another (late season) cold front was moving through. I lost all the flowers on one spike, and may lose more. Just uploaded a video on this experience.

Good information, thank you for sharing. I keep my Cymbidiums outside until first frost and they handle it just fine. I've just realised that I haven't been feeding them enough though... I can reflower them, but I can never get a decent amount of blooms and that probably is reason for that. Also, I have one mini Cymbidium that only has got 3 pseudobulbs and it still blooms. But that could be some kind trait of that particular hybrid. Anyway, great video and good timing. Thanks!

I live in Lithuania. We have pretty cold winters and warm summers. So I keep my Cymbidiums outside in summer and place them in a coolest spot indoors for the winter. So far, so good :)

hi Rachel, In So. calif. and on the coast, my cymbidiums live outside all year long. I do water them with a hose year round and feed heavy all year round. My problem is slugs and snails, and corn meal works well to keep them in place. Also I start staking the bud growth as they start emerging. Otherwise you will have floppy flower stalks, unless they are pendant. They also get a virus so keep the plants clean, and the medium large bark. I also replant back bulbs and in 2 ro 3 years I get them to re bloom. They are a weed here, and I have found them in garbage pails, as people are so lazy, they throw them out after blooming. I just rescued 6 plants, and after cleaning and repotting, found that 4 were in spike. Crazy people here.

I live in So Cal too. I have a lot of cyms all outdoors year round. Under trees. I like the tip about cornmeal. So many vids talk about how to get rid of spider mites and other pests. Are there any pests that are harmless to our orchids other than taking an occasional bite out of a leaf? Is that a moth it grasshopper? Sometimes baby flies may be looking for water after I water my plants. I use sticky strips for gnats and the soap/alcohol/water solution for pests. Fortunately I don't have snails or slugs (yet). Happy planting.

+Glenda Urmacher I live in L.A. Mid-wilshire area south of The Grove. I have a lot of cyms that needed repotting and orchid bark is costly for so many plants. So I was at Lowe's and I saw what looks like bark but the ingredients said "forest products and colorant". It's like chunky bark. So I bought a couple of big bags around $5 a bag. I figured my cyms survived potting soil (but I was told to take them out of that). So this stuff will give them an airy environment. I'm not going to do the inorganic that some people are doing. Too expensive. I'm a beginner so I buy the cheaper orchids. Trader Joe's is pretty reasonable even if they have no name tags.

The Cymbidiums are one of my favourite orchids, they are so big and meaty like you mentioned in the video and the flowers last quite a while. Mine is just starting to grow the first flower spike since I got it last year, should I wait a little longer before moving it inside the house so it can put more flower spikes or should I move it right now ? because right now the temperature is hitting 3° C I love your channel, you have such a beautiful garden ❤️ and also you are an inspiration to me; may be one I can have a garden like yours. If I get temperatures up to 35ºC or a little more in summer at the hottest hour of the year but the place where I have the plant is usually cooler and more humid.should I move the plant indoors? I’m not in my house all the day so the air conditioner isn’t on and it’s hot indoors but not as hot as outside ps: I leave the windows open I need an advice Thanks in advance

hi Rachel! this video has been so informative! my family friend has generously given me one of her cyms for my bedroom and it’s the first plant I’m taking care of so I’m a little nervous! since its coming to winter now, the temperature in my room will likely go down to 10-15 degrees C which I read was a good temperature. my bedroom window is south-east facing so hopefully putting my cym at the centre of my room will give it the right amount of light. from watching your video I want to give watering and feeding once a week a go; what tomato feed do you use? if there is any other tips you think of do let me know :)

Hi there and great about your new cym. I would place it on your windowsill in winter to get the best light possible. The temperature should be fine. I can't advise you about tomato food as I use a different one each time I buy. Good luck and happy flowering.

Thank you for such a great video. My husband bought me a cymbidium as it was different to what I grow, which are normally Phalaenopsis or Dendrobium orchids. My what a difference. It has a flower spike that has 2 flowers left so now know to cut the totally and will soon place in the greenhouse. Ive kept it indoors as couldn't find clear instructions before your video. Anyway my question is, mine has no back bulb. It appears to be in two parts with a rounded bulbous bit on each and a few leaves and then that's it. Does this mean it's a very young plant? What can I do to encourage growth and strength apart from feed? And what pot is best? Sorry that was more than one question lol. Thank you. 😊

Thank you for your message. Your plant could be a small division. I would use a plastic pot for cyms and just keep up the watering and feeding to encourage new growth.

Good for you, Ken. I would protect them from rain. It can be very wet in the summer in Ireland. I note also that in Madeira they protect their outside cymbidiums from most of the rain.

My question is “ is it possible to plant them directly in clay pots without keeping the plastic pots ? When I buy Cymbidiums it’s coming with a plastic pot. And that’s why I need to know . Thank you. Yes, you can plant directly in the clay pots. Some people prefer clay and some favour plastic. Your orchids will dry quicker in the clay pots so you may need to water them more frequently. Happy growing!

Ssshhhh, we mustn't let my cyms hear about blooming in warmer weather. Seriously though, the advice my Cym society gives us is to water in the evenings during summer with cold water, I did that this year and I got blooms on plants that never flowered for me before.

I never heard of that one! What temperature does the water have you use. I ask because I only use rainwater and depending on the temperature you suggest I maybe have to cool that water down in summer.

Patrick Hempe . Hi Patrick. I usually just water from my garden hose after letting any warm water run off first. I live in Australia so often the water that comes out initially can be close to boiling. I have heard a few people say they refrigerate water for them, but I have a lot of plants so that’s not possible for me. The most important part is to water late in the day (evening or even night) during the hot season for about 3-4 weeks, which for me is December and January. Quite often the temps at night where I live can be close to daytime temps which means hot nights.

Interesting video, it would be helpful if you said what "blast" means.

I got a cymbidium around Late February and it was in bloom..the whole plant had 4 all growth ..right after done blooming two new growth started showing and it been growing well since...right now starting showing 2 new growth underneath of the last 2 growth..do you think it might be a flower spikes instead of new growth?..so in case they are flower spikes, can I move inside of the house where is cooler than outside?..I live in Florida and the temperature outside right now is 32 degrees Celsius and inside my house is about 24 degrees..can I move the plant back and forth outside and inside so they can have de difference in temperatures?..or can I leave it outside until it done blooming before putting inside the house?

Hi Eduardo. If you have flower spikes there is no need to move the plant to get cooler temperatures. Unless you want to move it to enjoy the flowers indoors. If you don't have flower spikes, then yes, it would be an idea to move the plant to cooler night temperatures to promote blooming. Good luck!

Hi Rachel I've watched your videos on how to care for Cymbidium care and i'm rather confused. I was given a Cymbidium November 2020 and it was in full flower, which i think is 'Ice cascade'. In spring i hung it outside in a east facing courtyard by my door and stayed there all summer until September then it went into my cold greenhouse for the winter 2021. Its in a 7" pot and literally all root and climbing out. I intended to re-pot this spring but when i went to do it i found lots of flower spikes. I decided to leave it and see what would happen. in April I put it outside again when weather permitted and by May I had 7 spikes. In June I had the first flower followed by two more spike blooming. I'd love to show you a photo but unable on the comment area. I have done some research on flowering time and like yourself i'm informed its in the winter period. Is flowering at this time of year a common thing or perhaps a summer flowering variety? Thanks for all your videos I really enjoy them.

Sounds like you have one cracker of a cymbidium! There are some cyms that flower in summer but yours is covering two seasons! Definitely a keeper. PS Sorry for the late response to your comment.

It depends on how many new roots you cut off but generally cymbidiums are tough cookies so your plant should be all right. But don't do that again 😂

I grow my cymbidiums a year and i live in Cyprus and in the summer the weather goes up to 45 ’C. And in the winter down to 2 ‘C

I have 5 different cymbidiums in my living room but this one has leaves that are turning brown and yellow down the length of the leaf. Any idea whats causing this? Thanks!

While cymbidiums will lose some old leaves after flowering, the reasons for leaf browning and yellowing are usually cultural. Perhaps light or heat is insufficient. Check watering! Conventional wisdom has it that browning leaf tips is a sign of too much fertiliser. Personally I have found it to result from the opposite with cymbidiums and have had this due to insufficient fertiliser. When you have ruled out all these cultural considerations then a fungal issue may be the cause! Good luck!

Hi there and thank you for your comment. The information in this video relates to the reflowering of cool growing cymbidiums.

When growing cymbidium indoors like other orchids is it necessary to have a humidifier especially when your climate is quite dry? I have a large window facing east but it’s not in direct sunlight, it’s a shaded undercover area and if growing indoors would a grow light be sufficient? How much light do they need and how many hours if under a growlight?

In spring, summer and autumn cymbidiums should have light equivalent to 3000-4000 foot candles for 50% of the time. I am not sure about a humidifier but if you do use one, make sure you have good air circulation. I used to spray my cym leaves and they developed fungal issues so keep an eye on this. Hope it helps.

Hi I have just acquired a cymbidium orchid and I am wondering how to water this plant because the plant seems to be really crowded int he pot and the water just run right out of it?? Well, I guess in spring you will repot so you won't have this problem next year. I guess the best thing is to stand it in a bowl of water, as you are doing. Good luck.

That's a good question. So much depends on ambiant temperatures and variety. But cymbidiums should flower for a couple of weeks at least

I purchased my first cymbidium this spring in flower. Unfortunately the one I purchased had an injury and I took it back within a week. The replacement plant was healthy enough but had been mishandled and didn't get to enjoy the flowers too long. I've been growing her outdoors watering her when we don't receive enough rain. I've been feeding her regular orchid fertilizer and fish emulsion( one tablespoon to a gallon of water).

Great video! I purchased a Cymbidium this summer with no ID or flower pic at a flower store because it was very cheap. In the flat I live now theres not a place thats both cool and sunny, so I move it outside to a small balcony at night and inside at day so it has daylight. It put out 4 growths, and 2 did look seriously like flower spikes, but now they are getting more and more spiky, can a flower spike turn into a new growth? I swear when they all started you could definetly tell 2 of them apart for being fatter and with round tips :( This video is really nice as there seems to be some controvery about potting media and feeding. I know think I'll feed mine a bit more, as I'm using about 250ppm water+fertilizer. Final question, do you think seramis would be ok for them? I had to order a really large bag.

Using your balcony is a good move for the cymbidiums. I have never heard of cym flower spikes turning into growths although there is some evidence that this can happen with dendrobiums. I don't know about using seramis on the plant. It is semi-terrestrial so that would put me off yet some people manage to grow semi-terrestrials in seramis so I don't know!

in australia we are in Winter...August 9th 2018.... i have several but only one has a flower spike... that started around 8 weeks ago... and has buds about a metre long cane...but the buds are not opening.. and 3 have blasted.... not sure why any help?? they are outside under cover and receive early am sun and indirect light all day... they are full plants not divided... did have spikes on them several months ago when bought... any advise please
