Reflections In Glasses | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Reflections of flashes or LED lights are a potential hazard for any photographer photographing anyone wearing sunglasses or even regular glasses. If you’re looking for how to avoid reflections, skip to the end of this video. However, photographer Gavin Hoey takes a different approach and actively embraces reflections. In this video, he shows you two very different ways to work with reflections.
Starting out with a low-key portrait, Gavin takes you through the best place to put your light to get moody shadows and perfect reflections on a profile portrait. Next Gavin switches things up with a white wall background, a wide-angle lens, and some round reflections.
Finally, Gavin shows you why you get reflections in glasses and how to remove reflections in sunglasses without using Photoshop.

    Gavin yet another great and informative video. Use of simple props makes so much impact to the session . You and Sophie make things look so easy when you both work together. And just some cheap props looks amazing and fun to work with . This reminds me of the one you done a few years ago with high key photoshoot and white sunglasses , keep giving us more Gavin just awesome.

    Hey Gavin, just recently discovered your videos. A lot of helpful information. I am also an Olympus shooter, I own the 12-40 as well. I was a little surprised to see you shooting with it for portraits. I'm curious, what focal lengths do you use? I saw your video instruction to shoot at lower level in relation to your subject. Just curious is you have a go too focal length or does it vary during the shoot?

    Thanks Gavin, super informative as always, getting no reflection is actually the interesting part. Capturing some corporate head shoots recently was having trouble not getting reflections off glasses. The light was quite high and from memory around 45deg angle from the face, the light had a diffuser in front of it but we still got reflections. The front of the spectacles are curved so I think hard to avoid. A video just on this topic would be great 😍

I love that you use alot of your wide angle zoom lens, so I have a question about focal lenth for the wide-angle portraits: If you have to choose between one prime lens for the full frame camera to make them, what would you pick and why - 20mm, 24mm or 28mm? thanks in advance

  • @GavinHoey

    Hi Mati. I'm a micro four thirds user so you need to double my lens focal length to match the crop of a 35mm (full frame). Back in the days when I did shoot 35mm my go to wide was always a 24mm.

  • @GavinHoey

    @GavinHoey

    2 жыл бұрын

    Really great question! The lighting you see is set up for video and has an exposure of about 1/60th sec, 1000 ISO, f/4.0. Flash is very VERY much brighter meaning I'll always get a sharper photo with less noise and more depth of field (if needed). That aside the flat light needed for a video is a million miles from the shadows and contrast I love in my photos. I hope that helps.
