Reflections In Glasses | Take and Make Great Photography with Gavin Hoey
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Reflections of flashes or LED lights are a potential hazard for any photographer photographing anyone wearing sunglasses or even regular glasses. If you’re looking for how to avoid reflections, skip to the end of this video. However, photographer Gavin Hoey takes a different approach and actively embraces reflections. In this video, he shows you two very different ways to work with reflections.
Starting out with a low-key portrait, Gavin takes you through the best place to put your light to get moody shadows and perfect reflections on a profile portrait. Next Gavin switches things up with a white wall background, a wide-angle lens, and some round reflections.
Finally, Gavin shows you why you get reflections in glasses and how to remove reflections in sunglasses without using Photoshop.

Those b &w photos are so nice, more than nice its got clear crisp visuals and wet, a brightness to the photoshoot, what I'd like my photos to look like
Great styling here. Ok, it was about glasses, but I loved the stripes and the choice of B&W. The result is a fantastic "60's fashion shoot" look. Love it!
Brilliant photos especially the B&W with striped glasses.
Short and sweet ... just how it should be, no long winded irrelevant stories. Once again, great inspiration for us. Thanks Gavin.
Fantastic shots of Sophie! Black and white adds to the artsy look of the images. Thanks a lot for an informative, entertaining and inspiring video all in one, GH at his best!

Great content as always Gavin. There is always something new I pick up from your teachings. Looking forward to more in 2022!
I saw the title, thought that's gotta be a Gavin! Clicked and enjoyed.
Gavin, you are THE BEST!!!
Great video! Thank you and great to see you "back"! Best to you for the New Year!
What a great set of images. Love the high contrast B&W, wide angle, and stripes. Makes me think of 60's fashion photography.
Gavin yet another great and informative video. Use of simple props makes so much impact to the session . You and Sophie make things look so easy when you both work together. And just some cheap props looks amazing and fun to work with . This reminds me of the one you done a few years ago with high key photoshoot and white sunglasses , keep giving us more Gavin just awesome.
Gavin is awesome! Love all his tutorial videos. Simple and straight forward!
Thank you again Gavin !! I always look forward to you work !!
Gavin, another WINNER video! Thanks for showing the "in and outs" of reflections. Nothing like your style of demonstrating to sear long lasting imprints in my brain. Nothing stays with me like a Gavin Hoey video. (And that is a good thing!)
Love it!! Its simple and just one light on the second setup!!!! Thanks for another awesome video!!
You are and always have been a very inspirational individual for me Gavin. Thanks mate..... all the best to you.
Thanks for all the videos, always inspiring can’t wait for 2022 videos. All the best for the new year.
Also those stripes in black and white are awesome.

Love the black and white editing. Looks like a great shoot ..thanks.
Great video! As always!
I’m such a fan!!! You not only explain the process but you make it fun to try. You take the scare out of photography. Love this inclusion of light. I can’t wAit to try it. Happy Holidays.
Hi Gavin!!! You are a Genius!!! Grettings from Rosario City. Argentina. 👏👏👏
Thanks for an interesting way to remind us about reflections angles. Have a happy new year.
This was amazing work, thanks a lot!! I loved all of the pictures.
Awesome idea! I really like how choosing black and white or color gives off a completely different feel to reflections too.
Always good. I like having these little reminder videos. Haven't shot someone with glasses for a while? Don't forget this stuff. Great!

Great job Gavin! You incorporated a lot of your optometry background in this one! Angle of incidence equals angle of reflection! You will have to try something using Snell’s Law for a future video! All kidding aside, another great tutorial. Lovely work by Sophie especially liked her black and white top, very appropriate for this shoot. All the best to you and Sam for the new year! Looking forward to more inspirational videos. Cheers!

Hi Brad. Sophie is first and foremost a make-up artist and one with experience of everything from Hollywood blockbusters right down to working with me! She also happens to be a super talented model and one of the loveliest people you could hope to work with.
I was shooting some sunglasses the other day and forgot to remove my grid. Some gnarly effects for sure!
Nice video !!! Thanks
Cool video, I appreciate this for sure. I embrace the reflection light on the sunshades I think it looks cool..
Excellent.
I love your B&W edits, I imagine it's Lightroom?

Yea, you need a few more pairs of sunglasses, Gavin. Pretty sparse selection right there now. ;)
Impressing
I hated the reflections, but after watching this video I will start to use them!
Hey Gavin, just recently discovered your videos. A lot of helpful information. I am also an Olympus shooter, I own the 12-40 as well. I was a little surprised to see you shooting with it for portraits. I'm curious, what focal lengths do you use? I saw your video instruction to shoot at lower level in relation to your subject. Just curious is you have a go too focal length or does it vary during the shoot?
F I R S T G A N G ! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 - Swole Beast🤙🏽🙏🏽✌🏽 U N B E L I E V A B L E E E ! 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thanks Gavin, super informative as always, getting no reflection is actually the interesting part. Capturing some corporate head shoots recently was having trouble not getting reflections off glasses. The light was quite high and from memory around 45deg angle from the face, the light had a diffuser in front of it but we still got reflections. The front of the spectacles are curved so I think hard to avoid. A video just on this topic would be great 😍

Great video Gavin. But I have another idea for you. Just stick the pieces of white paper onto your glasses:)))
Thanks for the vid, Gavin! I love that you use alot of your wide angle zoom lens, so I have a question about focal lenth for the wide-angle portraits: If you have to choose between one prime lens for the full frame camera to make them, what would you pick and why - 20mm, 24mm or 28mm? thanks in advance
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mati. I'm a micro four thirds user so you need to double my lens focal length to match the crop of a 35mm (full frame). Back in the days when I did shoot 35mm my go to wide was always a 24mm.
Another great video. I would like to know the model of the monitor to see the photos that appear in the video please. Thank you.

Does anyone know what the small monitor is which Gavin is tethering to? Is it an iPad? If so, what application is he running so that he and his model can review images? Thanks

What are you tethering to please? I’m not a fan of using laptops on shoots, but this looks like it’s just a handy field monitor that you’re reviewing shots on as they’re taken??

What's your favourite focal length Gavin?
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
My favourite very much depends on what I want to achieve. But my most used is going to around the 40mm mark... Which equates to 80mm on a full frame.
The red glasses 0:51 are good on you… with this shirt you look like a gallery patriarch…
Why do you use a flash if the scene is already properly lit?
@GavinHoey
2 жыл бұрын
Really great question! The lighting you see is set up for video and has an exposure of about 1/60th sec, 1000 ISO, f/4.0. Flash is very VERY much brighter meaning I'll always get a sharper photo with less noise and more depth of field (if needed). That aside the flat light needed for a video is a million miles from the shadows and contrast I love in my photos. I hope that helps.
How did u remove reflections in regular glasses?
