Was not expecting to cry but “i cannot hide who i am, though I’ve tried” had me shedding tears. It brought me back to when i first discovered i was trans, not understanding any of the things i was feeling but realising how truly out of place i felt. Now i can be myself and don’t have to hide, and I’m starting to recognise the person i see in the mirror as myself.

Having the same experience. I'm letting my hair grow, but got myself a wig for the meantime. First time I put it on I thought about this song.
I’m an abuse victim and this song hits so hard and I hold it close to me along with my sisters.
As an Asian American woman who struggled and still struggles so much with expectations that are only placed on women in Asian culture both in my family and the world, this song will always mean so much too me and will never fail to move me. There are so little representation of Asian women anywhere and we get objectified in some of the worst ways. This song was and still is such a precious and rare representation of Asian woman without that. Even in 2020, I still get such rude and frankly gas-lighting questions and comments like "you aren't Asian enough." "why are you so sensitive/self-hating" when I don't act obedient or conforming like "good Asian girls are supposed to". And yet as the comments here show, people are so quick to steal our culture and voice. When I point it out I'm phobic and conservative. Okay, I would rather be called all that than be a pushover who lets others take whatever little representation and voice we have. Mulan is an Asian woman as I am.

I so relate to this comment. I've been told I'm not Asian enough by people who know nothing about my culture. Some white guy with an Asian fetish once told me I was disrespecting my culture because I wasn't using chopsticks to eat cafeteria sushi. I'm Filipino, dip shit, we don't use chop sticks. What gets me is how truly disgusted he looked, like he was an Asian ancestor or something, but he was an American white guy in his 20s. I didn't owe him anything. Anyway, all my life I got comments like that. "Are you a mail order wife?" "Too bad your Americanized and lost your obedience", all by people who know absolutely nothing about my culture. This song is something rings true for so many people who have been misinterpreted or misrepresented or just plain misjudged

The Trans community are just robbers, I am Catholic and you wouldn’t believe how they try to hy-Jack St. Joan of Arc. When I hear them claiming this song it really irks me because most teenagers can relate to this song, while I am not Asian, I was called “not normal “ growing up. This song touch me. I think a lot of people can relate to this song no matter what the true meaning of this song is...... I see myself in a way where I think I’m not good enough for my family all my life I’ve tried to live up to being the perfect beautiful daughter they’ve always wanted and I’ve tried ways to change that but at the end of the day I’ll always be the same insecure & lonely girl inside no matter what I do I’ve always felt I needed to change myself just for them to be proud of me....

I have always loved this song. The movie. The song. Everything about _Mulan_. I love it. This is actually perhaps the greatest Disney song ever because, as one looking through the other comments will see, everyone takes something from it. While the meaning of the song in the context of the movie differs somewhat from the meaning taken by other people, everyone takes there own meaning from it. Basically, I feel as though that's the point of any song in a Disney movie. Yes, the songs are meant (mostly) to simply move the plot on quicker, individually, outside of the movie, they should also be able to be related to. This song does that so perfectly. Several people I have played this song for have never seen the movie (in fact, I made a point of playing it around people who had not seen the movie and who did not know this song was even from a movie) and the general consensus was basically the same as most of the other comments: it's a song about accepting yourself, or coming to terms with who you are versus who you feel you should be. Basically, this song just simply resonates with people because, in a way, regardless of who you are or what your life is like, there is always something about it that people can just _relate_ to. I might just be biased or something, but this most definitely is one of the best, if not _the_ best, songs in Disney history. Besides, outside of the context of it being a Disney song, it's still a damn good piece of music.

This song makes me cry so much sometimes because I'm one of those many girls who are looked down upon by her family because I'm not what they expect me to be. i scheduled an appointment with a clinic today to get a testosterone prescription, and i've been so excited that i decided to celebrate by rewatching mulan. it was easily my favorite disney movie as a kid, and i felt it would only be appropriate to celebrate such a huge milestone by looking back at the beginning of my journey. it's been a good few years, and i most certainly wasn't expecting to be completely in tears less than 15 minutes in. this movie is very good. it meant so much to me as a little girl, and it means a lot to me now as a grown man.

A beautiful song but far to short if you ask me. And the singer has a lovely voice.
As every song trying to convey a certain feeling, it does come with an example as a base, but it can be different for everyone who listens to it - what that feeling means to one, I mean. That song - no, the whole message of the movie - spoke to me so much when I was a child and it does to this day. I will never stop loving it.
My heart breaks when I hear this song 💔 😢 it reminds me of myself and me dwelling on my insecurities and my shortcomings. How I wanted to be best but ending up being a failure 💔. I hope one day I truly found what i have been looking for inside

No...not really. Mulan is singing about being a daughter having to uphold such high standards in an Asian family. Of course, queer people can relate to this song, but if you're not specifically Asian, you don't know exactly what she's singing about and you probably do not want to. It's okay to make connections to songs or have your own personal interpretation, but that doesn't mean it's the ultimate truth or the end all be all. Not everyone knows how it's like to be Mulan and that's okay. Truth be told many are ignorant to the fact they do not share similar experiences with others, and again, that is no crime, but it's important to acknowledge. Because you probably don't know the struggles that come with that firsthand, the pain of Asian tradition, or even the prejudice they experience. It might hurt to hear, but it's the truth. I'm glad so many people relate to the song in their own way. It says a lot when people can make their own interpretations, once again, but that does not change who it was written for. And I hope you know that. I hope you realize the layers this song has and the connection it has to Asian people, because I promise, being a person of color, and being a daughter, is an entirely different experience of it's own...
Rest in Peace, CoCo Lee.
I'm coming to terms with the fact that I'm bisexual, but I feel like I cannot tell my family. That they will judge me. And my two best friends are very religious, so what would they think? This song is one of my favorites of all time. I will never be a perfect bride. If I were to truly be myself, I'd break my family's heart. And I don't know who the stranger is in the mirror. Who am I, really? I'm still finding out, and this song is guiding me in the process of discovering who I am.

Out of all the Disney Princess songs, this one makes me fricken cry the most. This song REALLY hits close to home for me. As someone who has autism, I strongly identify with Mulan. I often struggled with my lack of self esteem and self worth and being told by some people that I’m not good enough and always trying to prove to the world that I’m so much more than just your average autistic adult who is a social butterfly and that like all people, I just quite simply wanted to be loved, to be fully accepted, be supported, find true love/companionship and to fit in with society. 😔 In the past 10 years or so, I have struggled with depression, anxiety, unemployment, finding and keeping a job, fitting in, grief, loss, suicidal thoughts, lack of self esteem, self worth, self acceptance, self love and the covid-19 pandemic in general and over the years, I’ve proven myself time and time again that I’m a very strong willed, independent, brave, determined, diligent, punctual, hard working, resilient, honest, thoughtful, selfless, compassionate, kind, caring and loving young woman who never gives up and more importantly that I CAN AND WILL overcome anything. Now fast forward to the present day and I found not one but 2 jobs and have 2 beautiful cats whom I loved dearly as if they were my children. Also if I didn’t have the love and support from all my friends and family in my life to help me through those difficult times, I don’t know how I would have coped and got to be where I am today. 😊
Living as a bisexual ,gender fluid PK is hell on earth like this song got me through so much as a kid because i felt like mulan felt the same way i did

I know how you feel
I was astonished upon both animated Mulan movies bundled together in a 2-movie collection; the live-action adaptation will get a back-to-back switch bundle with the 1998 film.
I'm an abdl and a gay female and very sick, and this song hits me right in the feels. My parents treat me like dirt as it is for being disabled so I am /never/ coming out to them. so yeah...this is pretty much my theme song.

Can someone be who they feel to be? Like okay I’m sorry but. Who gives 2 flying fucks about the devil lmao I’ve never seen him in person how the hell do I know he’s real. Be who feel you need to be not what you originally are. Because if that’s not you.. that your screwed being someone you don’t want to be. You should be who you want to be. Not what your supposed to be
Who else can imagine the scene just by hearing mulan sing?? ❤️❤️

Man honestly ny favorite Disney movie as a child has never been more important to me for many reasons these days and I bawl my eyed out hearing this song
The first time I watched this lyric video I fell in love with song. I checked the comments as a curious maybe 10 year old me would have. I saw that a lot of people commented you only like this if you’re gay. I thought to myself what is gay I’m not that. However, flashing forward to present day me I have since realized I am gay. So I’ve come full circle

It's MY dysphoic breakdown and I GET TO CHOOSE THE MUSIC
Mulan is one of my favorite princesses.
They really didn't intend for this to become the transsexual anthem.

“Now I see, that if I were truly to be myself, I would break my family‘s heart” is such a relatable line because of me being gay and enby
