About Me
I run a small business called The Solent Boat Butler and spend my days repairing, maintaining and refitting sailing boats (often Contessa 32’s due to my long experience with them). I'm mostly in the central Solent area of the UK. Being a cruising and racing sailor with many thousands of inshore and offshore sea miles logged I like to think that I bring a great deal of real-world experience to my work and help many new (and not so new) boat owners to improve and maintain their boats. When I'm not fixing boats I also provide some own-boat sail training, help owners with deliveries, provide pre-purchase inspections and deliver consultancy services to those that are refitting their own boats for cruising or racing.

    In this particular project, the "What and the Why" are far more important than cutting and sanding, and I picked up some great ideas for my 1979, 31 footer. Well Done George. G.

    Nice work George - sorry if I missed detail but you could have put a hinged panel forward of the existing one and that larger space may have given more flexibility - I guess you discussed all of that with the owner.😉

    Had considered that but then you loose the space where it’s planned to put other stuff.

    Thanks, vhf will be mounted under the deck just forward of the main switch panel (effectively in the book shelf area). The chart plotter/mfd is mounted outside in the cockpit.

    That's is some very nice woodwork indeed ! I do like the new shore power panel, I am about to replace my old domino unit with a new rcd consumer unit but this looks like a proper job. Thanks for another very informative video.

    Thanks. I have used/fitted a domestic RCD/ Fuse box a few times previously (albeit a water resistant one designed for garages or outside buildings) which is much cheaper but definitely not as nice. The owner Pre-bought all the switch panels and provided them, really nice quality but I know they are quite expensive.

    @@RefitandSail Thanks George, I'll look into that, I thought it was your spec not the customer, interesting. The one I have would be fitted in a garage or the like, the current one is in the engine bay and I was going to keep it there but change the feed cable, I also like the new shore power socket you fitted. Thanks for the advice. 🍺 in the post.

    Great video thanks...working on my Ranger 32 is almost identical except no nav station just a big bin locker that I'll likely make a similar desk.. thinking of a roller top. Any thoughts on Ranger Vs. Contessa?

    Very nice work!! Is the galvanic isolator just screwed into the hull?

  • @RefitandSail

    @RefitandSail

    Thanks, not direct on the hull, off camera I bonded some plywood ti the inside of the hull so that equipment can be mounted easily, then the whole area was flowcoated. So it’s screwed to that.

    @@waterboy8999 the GI is not particularly heavy so 4 self tapping screws into the plywood is plenty strong enough.

    Nice work! I have a question. I know they make new Contessa 32, but a new Contessa is just as good as an old one. Are they equally well built? Thank you!

    A new co32 is going to be a better boat that a 1970’s built boat in many ways as the resins in the hull and deck layup are better, also the quality of the fit out by JRL is extremely high. That said some of the other materials that not so good or not say to get hold of. For example good quality slow-grown Teak is very expensive and in short supply and JRL (like me) would rather it stayed in the rainforest than be felled and imported illegally so we are both looking to other more sustainable options but that is proving problematic at times.

    19:21 How did you fix the cable to the deck/hull? I find the cable tie mounts don't stick, and I don't want to screw into the fibreglass for risk of going too deep.

  • @RefitandSail

    @RefitandSail

    9 ай бұрын

    They are sticky mounts but with the addition of a screw, on that outer side there is a ledge or shelf that the deck sits on so the short screw go into that no problem. The other option I have done when it is not possible to screw is to bond small blocks of wood or GRP to a hull then screw into that.

    Blue sea is nice but top end price-wise. There are other options and custom made or diy if you want to buy the components.
