Refitting the alternator cover to the Monster 659 engine.

Refitting the alternator cover to the Monster 659 engine and undoing a couple of mistakes from last time. Featuring an epic battle with the flywheel nut fitted in a prior video. It did not want to come off.
Overall, really not sure how it went on for so long.

It made me feel so good to hear you start by saying that you had to undo two things that you had done previously because you had done something wrong. I thought I was the only one who sometimes finds himself in that situation! When a man of your skill and experience and expertise has to undo something to redo something else, that is quite a statement. Your videos are awesome, your skill and knowledge and your explanations are incredible! Thank you so much. You have no idea how much your videos have helped me work on my first Ducati! You are often better than a shop manual! Thanks again, David

That threaded rod in the dowel hole is a good trick - I must remember for next time. If your case is the same as my 1100 Evo, then the two screws at the bottom of the engine (immediately after the lower dowel) are both 30 mm.

does one of them have washers and a wire loop on it that i'm not using?

@bradthebikeboy Yes. The one below the dowel screw has a washer either side of the wire clip for the breather tube, (which would explain the extra length). The other screw has nothing between it and the crankcase, so not sure why it's longer.

I replace all the case 6mm screws with stainless 316 or 304.

Just curious, was there a reason why you didn't use the holding tool when you were trying to get the flywheel nut off? Also, if you don't have that tool, could you lock it using the old "penny in the gears" trick or perhaps a rod through the small end eye?

I would also like know about the tool, its bloody expensive for a one time thing... but everytime I think about penny between gears its sends shivers down my spine, like for some people rubbing a baloon does...

the flywheel holding tool that goes over the inner screw heads would just get destroyed using it with a rattle gun. that's a 3/4 drive high torque rattle gun. penny in the gears would have been destroyed too, and hopefully just that. it was really locked on. if the flywheel wasn't machined down i could have used the tool that locks into the two holes, but even that would have still been a battle i expect. i certainly wouldn't rattle through the big and small ends.

25:33 Meaningless for this model, but is it safe to assume it very much matters for older smallblock engines, where the pickup is on the flywheel?

Tnx for the vid. Brad! Wouldn't 243 loctite work? Also what's your opinion on Alu(Ergal)flywheels(have got one but i am not sure i dare to use it..) ? My idea is to use a "Nordlock" washer and some 243 together with the alu flywheel(it's a "full size" one) . The engine is a Testastretta v1.0. Would value your opinion very much!

243 is medium strength. i wouldn't use it. 262 is red and high strength, you could use that. i'm wondering if the air hose was an issue here - i've never had that much trouble getting a loctited nut off before. that rattle gun uses a lot of air. the aluminium flywheels used to tear out their splines at 180nm, but we never used any at 270nm that i can recall. we were machining the original ones down by then.

It's the airline, I run a 1/2" airline direct from the tank for my 3/4 gun and just put it away when not using the gun. My recoil hose will barely run a 1/2 in gun. I've had to wind the screw up on the controller before to get 150psi in the tank.

@@joshhuber1948 yeah, the hose i was using is the most recent one i bought, and i thought it was the same as the recoil on the other side of the workshop which is fine with this gun for anything i do. but it's 10mm, not 1/2". i should have changed hoses.

@@bradthebikeboy I reckon mine is about 6mm 🤣, good for an air blower only. You can hear the gun suffocate on mine
