Refinishing a Fender Custom Shop Stratocaster to make it Relic Multilayer.

Thank you all very much.
However, even though it peeled off in pieces, I couldn't make a good relic...
Somehow, someway, I managed to make it look like... well...
Well, I don't have much more to offer, so that's my limit for now.
With hard relics, I'd like to try something that shows off the wood more....
Soft Relic? Soft Relic is like this...
It's hard to make it look vintage without overdoing it.
The more you add, the closer it gets to hard relic, but if you don't, it looks like a new guitar.
It's fun to work on something you've never done before, but it feels like you're cutting your life short.
And then there's the sunburst. My first sunburst paint job. (Technically, it's the second time, but the first time with three tones.
I bought a new gun for the burst. Iwata's W-50, which can blow at low pressure.
When it first arrived, I thought it was small! But I was shaken by the texture and the fineness of the paint that came out. A good gun is different, isn't it?
Before blowing, I pasted reference materials all over the wall and gave it a go.
I had to redo it a total of three times, but I think it worked best the second time.
Considering it's a sunburst with multi-layered relics, a thick sunburst of red and black wouldn't express it well.
I took that into account when I blew the third time, but it was difficult.
But I was able to make it finer, so I was able to reduce the amount of green peeled off.
As for the neck, I kept the relic down this time. The owner was concerned about the dents in the original relic paint, so I decided to keep the neck relic to the cracks.
I didn't take a video, but I also refinished the neck.
The further challenge this time was to keep the Custom Shop logo on the back of the head, and to match the tan color without removing the paint from the back of the head.
Isn't the photo before the tan matching the best?
This is the first time in my life that I've been able to successfully match the tan. I didn't take any pictures.
Fender Custom Shop...

There’s so much to take notes on here. I don’t have a custom Fender; can’t afford a custom Fender right now. But I’ve been thinking of getting an inexpensive Fender body (Poly) and stripping it so I can enjoy a nitro finish that I ‘customize’ myself. Thanks for sharing so generously.

I’ve got Poly finished bodies from over 30 years ago .. yeah there’s a few chips… but the wear and feel is still completely different than nitro or French polish. I’d love to have another 30+ years to ‘break in’ my guitars, but I know myself. , I’d rather be feeling a non-poly finish every day.

Tip from my own experience, so that it doesn't happen to you one day and have to learn the hard way :) At 01:40, if you see you can't easily get the nut out, never bang it in that direction like you do in the video, as you risk breaking the upper lip above the nut, that last remaining thin piece of fretboard right before the beginning of the downwards slope leading to the trussrod access hole. Trust me, it breaks way easier than you think. Once it happens to you, you'll wonder how come you didn't break it in any of the previous times :) Always bang against it sideways, with a small edge similar to a thick in-line screwdriver, just to nudge it out of place, while being careful not to have it slip/miss and hit the side of the neck. I find that 20 easy knocks are way better and safer than being in a hurry, wanting to do it all in 1 shot.

I actually like the cherry sunburst type of finish, even though it is a finish Fender never offered...so, when you see it, you know it can not be a factory finish. I actually like the 2-color sunburst much more than 60's style sunburst...even though, again, you will never see a factory 2-color SB with a rosewood fretboard...I just think it's a very attractive look.

The two colors rarely seen on Fenders,- darker green and blue. I can remember when the two factory pink shades were rare & unusual, before they became popular a decade ago.Tastes have broadened with finishes just as they have with generally acceptable sounds.Pink is like Fuzz; the same conservative dudes that criticized one, wouldn't dream of playing the other. Now the argument seems the " authenticity " of intentional relicing, but as you should have already learned, few are more transparently fake as those who make claims to supposed authenticity. Beautiful work; quality still can't be rushed.

We all have our preferences but I think he ruined a beautiful new sunburst Strat. The relic thing is a stupid thing to do. Some want to make evreyone think they put years of playing on their guitar and there's nothing more fake! To me it's just as bad as beating up a mint condition '57 Chevy!

was that soldering flux he used to remove the frets? After cringing at the taking a good looking guitar and abusing it to remove the finish and paint (great techniques by the way) I would of been happy after he applied the clear coat. I feel that beautiful wood should never be covered in paint.

  • @Andybassguitar

    @Andybassguitar

    4 жыл бұрын

    こんにちは。 この子のもとの塗装は恐らくポリウレタンだと思われます。ポリ塗装の中にもポリウレタン、ポリエステルなど種類もあります。 ラッカー塗装の場合というよりも一本一本の塗装の質によって剥がす方法を変えます。 ラッカーの場合はアイロンなどで熱を加えることもありますが、そのままペリペリと剥がしたほうが良い場合もあると私は考えます。

    @@Andybassguitar コメントありがとうございます!CS製のビンテージタイプにもウレタンがあったんですね! これは私のギターの話ですが(と見せかけて質問..)81年製のFERNANDES RST-80というモデルです。 これ、当時のカタログを見ましても「トップラッカー」と言っていますが、どう見てもウレタンっぽい、 もしくはちょっと違う性質のラッカーかな?と思っていまして、 薄さはかなり薄いんですが、硬いんです。シンナーには少し反応しますが、 例えば冷却スプレーなどでひび割れることもないですし、とにかく硬い(汗) 物凄く雑な質問の仕方ではありますが、どんな成分のラッカーかご想像できますか?(笑) アクリル系のラッカーですとこんな硬いんですかね?

I’m not figuring out everything that happened- the first sunburst you removed was the factory finish? I’m not sure, but it looked like how I imagine poly would look. Was it nitro? If poly, I would have thought a custom shop would have nitro.. Next, if that was factory nitro, why remove one sunburst and do another again?

It's sort of confusing. It WAS a sunburst. You stripped it all off only to respray it sunburst, then green, then relic to reveal sunburst. So in effect an old Sunburst with a green respray. WHY not just leave the original color with the imperfections/dings/etc and prep that and spray green? Same or better relic effect IMHO with far less work.

you don't want to build up a layer of finish at the edge of the neck pocket, either finish it all evenly or tape it ALL off.. remember the neck heel sits in that pocket and its completely flat where it mates up in the pocket, what's going to happen if you leave a layer of finish build up around the edge of the neck pocket is the neck will not sit complete into the heel pocket, therefore you will sacrifice sustain and tone which = resonance, wood to wood is always best IMHO, no sealer nothing curious why it was strippd it looked great to me? you just devalued it 40% or more

Totally not realistic finish checking Nitrocellulose cracks in linear lines, that follow the body wood grain direction are what you're looking for...Not the crazed pattern created by the use of Freon as used as the propellant in canned air that makes patterns like a old ceramic dish gets....A sharp single edge shaving razor blade, a few reference photos of actual vintage Fender guitars with weather check lines, combined with some PATIENCE barely scoring the hard cured nitro with linear lines.. A little stain rubbed into the razor scored lines make the lines a bit more visible
