Refining umbrella light: OnSet ep.
Join Daniel Norton OnSet as he shows you how to make the simple umbrella into a more versatile tool. By utilizing a flag, we are able to shape our light and control where it falls. We become lighting photographers when we learn how to control our light, not just exposure, but placement and coverage.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

Thanks...I havent used flags yet...I need to get unstuck from my comfortable gridded rim lights on leaping dancers! Its so easy to get comfortable when a set up works well. Your presentations have gotten so much better than when I first followed you. I love the little puppet as a charming signature. Thank you again for the lessons. My wish list a c stand...an optical snoot...more space!
Paulina is extraordinary at posing, and making her hands appear elegant (not that they aren't). She is a consummate pro and should do a modelling tutorial for Adorama. DN, has so much lighting knowledge, his content is always great. Thank you both!

It's weird that I've never thought to use the flag above like that. What a useful demonstration! Thanks for sharing.
Great video Daniel Norton! One Light with an Umbrella and a Flag and the possibilities are endless, like you demonstrated in the video making the white wall look grey and then using the Flag as a background. One could even shoot the subject against the wall and make it white, so it will be 3 backgrounds. Videos like these are so good showing all Photography enthusiast to get started with Lighting, thanks for that ADORAMA!

For sure
Ace as always - I started with umbrellas just like that one, still have them and still use them but in comparison I overcomplicate things with clamshell or bounce or a bigger deeper umbrella - this was another valuable lesson and as a speedlite guy doing portraits and headshots I am grateful for your constant refresh and reminder on keeping things simple and getting great results no matter the budget!

I love this guy! He always has useful real world tutorials.
Thanks Erica and Daniel. A very good demonstration. Flags can be very helpful and I need to use them more.

I never thought of using a flag the way you did. I got to experiment more.

Excellent
Wow! Way to further my umbrella setups in my tiny studio. Here I thought my umbrella and reflector were the whole story. Now I add a flag and I'm a triple threat for light control. Thanks for showing how this works! PS, really liked the rainbow effect on Paulina's face @ 0.36. Must be a different shoot from this umbrella shoot since the lighting looks non-umbrella-ish and her outfit is different.

That is from a previous onset video with Paulina
As Rodney Dangerfield said flags don’t get no respect. They’re underrated gems.

Indeed
I've been looking for C-Stands, they look so useful but a bit big for the studio space I have. Very jealous of your ceiling height. Thanks for the video Daniel.

Honestly, C stands are really good for small spaces because they take up so little room.
Very nice, Daniel and Paulina!

What has happened to Paulina? is she not modelling anymore?
Daniel, A lot of my clients want more full body shots. I notice most of your demos are just waist up and really close up headshots. Is this a trend? Or do models and photographers just want different things?
@DanielNortonPhotographer
3 жыл бұрын
For demos it’s easier to show the light in a tighter portrait. That being said, it depends on your client, 90% of mine prefer a portrait- unless it is a fashion shot or we are trying to show lifestyle
Please, put the audio through some low-pass filter. There are some high frequency sounds in the CRT effect animation in the end and it really hurts to hear them, especially on headphones.
