Refining Gold, Step 1

Over the past week, I've read up on refining of scrap gold and wanted to make a multi-part series about my attempt to refine 99.8% percent pure gold from 14-18K scrap. The total weight of the scrap gold at the start of the process was approx 4 oz, so I'm expecting 2-2.9 oz when finished, plus some PBMs and silver on the side.

my favorite part is around 2:50, bad memories and all just melt away :-) I made the ring when I was 18, but it lost all meaning last year, I'm just happy i got it back, it was a fair amount of gold.

I believe the flux combines with the impurities, pulling them away from the desired metal. This combination forms, I think, 'dross' or 'slag' which can be sent to a 'tolling' operation for further refining and recovery of any desired metals trapped in the slag.

$200 for an oxy rig and $10/month for a rented oxygen/LPG cylinder is money well spent for this exercise. You can get several oz of gold up to pouring temperature in a minute or so with oxy-anything.

Yeah, I know. My other torch would destroy the crucible. It can cut 3" steel plate with no problem. This was the only small one I had.

@HOODYWOODRECORDS It decreases the melt temp of gold (as does the addition of copper) and helps seperate the base metals (called a slag, after melt) from precious ones.

@pigpenpigpen1968 I recently read that cell phones contain about 6 oz gold per ton of cell phones. Computer boards contain less. Compared to gold ore, this is great, but it means that you have to handle a lot of cell phones to get much gold. There are videos on KZread that show you how, but you would have to do it at a commercial scale.

actually the borax acts as a flux so you can pour the melted material. if only it were that easy to purify the gold

So how exactly are the 'junk' metals removed thus only leaving pure gold? I saw you add the coke to the dish, but what happens after that? Do the other metals just burn off? And are you using just a little hand held torch that can be picked up at any hardware store?
