+silencedknight I have played competitive beach volleyball for 4 years straight each year I was required to go to officiating classes in order to get certified. So, yes, I've been certified for 4 years and each year they strictly say that players are allowed to take the time to clean off their glasses (gear) with reasonable explanation as to why it's necessary. Him getting hit in the face is definitely a reasonable explanation. Thanks for the mild disrespect but maybe you should take the time to educate yourself on the rules? Happy to enlighten you (:

+Hannah Marie Hi, thank you in providing me with your experience, I haven't played myself, so I may not have that experience quite like yourself. Now someone said this clip was cut a little short so it seemed like the referee wanted to hurry it up without letting them clean their glasses. From this this is what I understood. This guy said he was here (he's in the comments below. - He took more than 12 seconds, completely understandable since he just got his in the face, so let the man clean the sun cream off his eyes no problem. - Duration of that took about 30 seconds, getting a little bit long, so it is to my understanding after 18 more seconds he did ask him to hurry it up Yes, I read the rule (16.1.3 delaying the game 12 seconds shall be the maximum time from the end of a rally to the whistle for service under normal playing conditions), mind you I am taking into consideration of him just being hit in the face. What took place after, it seemed like the referee asked him not to approach him after being issued that warning to hurry it up and was going to give him a yellow card if he continued making comments and approached him which he did. Of course, that's what happened and he was issued a yellow. Then warned them both to stop or face the consequences of a red, then were issued a red. What took place after that was another issue that I had, with watching the video and reading the rulebook. The referee granted a medical timeout period of 5 minutes. - 17.1.2 An injured/ill player is given a maximum of 5 minutes recovery time, one time in a match. The referee must authorize the properly accredited medical staff to enter the playing court to attend the player. Only the 1st referee may authorize a player to leave the playing area without penalty. When the treatment has been completed or if no treatment can be provided, play must resume. The 2nd referee will whistle and request the player to continue. At this time, only the player can judge whether he/she is fit to play. In my opinion based on only reading and observing the rulebook, the players not only were allowed 5 minutes to complain to the delegate (didn't see any injury just complaining). I feel like if it needed to be open up I think it should've been done through what it says in the rulebook in dealing with protests, but instead used a medical timeout which didn't seem inappropriate. 5.1.3.2 If the captain previously requested a Protest Protocol via the 1st referee and this has not been successfully resolved at the time of the occurrence, he/she has the right to confirm it as a formal written protest, recorded on the score sheet at the end of the match. 22.2.4 He/she shall not permit any discussion about his/her decisions. However, at the request of the captain, the 1st referee will give an explanation on the application or interpretation of the rules upon which he/she has based his/her decision. If the captain disagrees with the explanation and formally protests, the 1st referee must authorize the commencement of a Protest Protocol. 24.2.3.2 in the case of a protest, with the previous authorization of the 1st referee, writes or permits the captain concerned to write on the score sheet a statement on the incident being protested; Again, thank you, but no thank you. I'm glad you provided me with a mere 3 sentences and a seemingly superficial comeback. I don't think I will apologize for any disrespect towards you, as I feel like I didn't, but if you feel offended just remember, I'm a no-nothing about the sport, just been doing reading and watching videos out of curiosity. I am glad you are certified, it's always good to bring back to your sport, and if you do ref, good, it is always good to keep your rules sharp. Have a nice day.

+Hannah Marie I'm a volleyball ref, what I think happened there is that the ref did not see him hinting towards cleaning his glasses at first. Therefore, it probably seemed quite odd to him that the player just left the field, wouldn't you agree? and at first it was not even a delay warning, it was just a quick whistle, then the player got mad and did not even try to go to the ref in order to explain the situation, but instead displayed ignorance with the head shaking. Therefore, a delay warning was given and after that, he goes to argue with the ref. Therefore, a red card is given. If the player had been respectfull towards the ref, no red card would have been awarded.

+silencedknight This is outrageous behavior by the ref, by way I have played competitive volleyball for 25 years, coached, and refereed. The job of a ref is to make the match run smoothly, know the rules, and rule fairly. This ref failed miserably on all three skills.

@Frafty In beach volleyball there is a caution that the player could have sand or sunscreen in his eyes or other places, so when a player gets domed like that and he is fixing his glasses and sorts like that the referee is suppose to give him time not give him a yellow card and red card could have been avoided but the reff's call was bull crap and if anybody else was in the situation would do the same thing and fight with him.

The referee asked him to not approach him and that he would sanction him with a delay warning if he did. Reckermann ignored that and approached the referee to continue the discussion. He got a yellow card for delay and freaked out and said to the referee "You are not the most importand person here". That is insulting and should have been sanctioned with a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.

You will never win??? This is not true... In my region if there is a ref that is failing at his job and enough players complain to the region about it he/she will be removed from refing. They dont get their way just cause they are standing above everyone else. They have to do their job all the same! Dude got blasted in the face and should have had time to readjusted, simple as that the ref was wrong.

@karst007 refs are apart of the game. it doesnt matter what the ref calls, if you honestly bitch about a play at all in volleyball when you know you can just side out the next point and then it doesnt matter anyway... and in any other sport its the same thing, refs are apart of the game, bad calls or good calls. You play with the cards youre dealt with you shouldnt let a ref affect the game at all.

You guys really dont know what really happened. This clip does not show the entire situation, its a cut version and really puts the referee in a bad position here. I was there and saw and heard everything. After getting the ball in his head Reckermann cleaned his glases for approx 30 sec. The referee whistled and asked hi to hurry up, you only have 12 sec between the balls, not 30 or 60 sec. Reckermann got upset and wanted to discuss with the referee, for the sole purpose to stal the game

After this ball, Brink continues to curse to the referee in german, even though he was warned first verbally, then with a yellow card and then verbally again. He then recieved a red card for rude conduct. After that he asked for a medical time out for the sole purpose to destroy the game for the referee. He did not need a medical timeout, he did not need medical assistance and if you listen good you here Brink tell the referee that he doesnt have to answer him on what kind of assistance he needs

Brink continues and receives a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct. You did not see this in this video since it was a cut version. After the yellow card the players got a little calm and played one ball. You dont see this either since it was a cut version.

so the yellow card was a mistake, but it didn't even matter ( a yellow card has no consequences) so Brink&Reckermann should have played on. Everything afterwards was totally out of place... these bad decisions happen all the time and sometimes they hurt you and sometimes they benefit you. e.g. at the olympic games in London the ref made a bad decision by not checking the ball mark on match point and guess who won the title? > Brink/Reckermann!

I disagree with the sportscasters. The referee is obviously of a high level, and knows what he is doing. Referees need to be treated with the utmost respect no matter what the call is. I agree with the ref. Plus, the player threatening the referee should result in that player being suspended, fined, or maybe even thrown out of the league.

  • @edinnum

The player have to answer on if he needs assistance or not and what kind of medical assistance he needs. Brink didnt recieved any assistance, he just sat in his chair for five minutes, was grumpy and discussed with the referee delegate. The referee did everything by the book and he could have been stricter. The german players, especially Brink was a real idiot here, not a hero as some of you say. He should be sanctioned by the FIVB for his behaviour, it should not be acceptable

The referee is in the right here. The player left the court without asking or signalling and so the ref issued a time delay yellow. Either the player or the ref could have handled this better, sure, but from then on the player is 100% at fault - the rules do not allow him to say or act has he did and a higher sanction is warranted. If a professional rugby player had spoken to a referee in this manor, he could expect huge fines and weeks of bans!

MGoose66 go away. in beach volleyball there is a rule that if you are hit with the ball in the face you can en may take time to clean your glasses. He was doing that for 15 seconds. In many games players use 1 minute or more for that. There was no need to whistle. The reaction was not smart, but the ref clearly let him profocate himself

Tom Jf If you need help with player and ref conduct requirements check out the FIVB website. It's all there in great detail . Where you're wrong is how the player did it - you can't just stroll off as you like. The ref, whilst correct, could certainly have handled it better. The rules of the game are VERY clear when it comes to sanctions for misconduct. Look them up.
