Hi Andy, I'm a bit late in checking out this video. Jan 2024. I am old school. I use a TEAC/TASCAM 80-8 through a Carvin 16 Track board. 1/2 inch tape. My studio will hold around 12 to 15 musicians comfortably here in the mountains of PA, USA. You remind me of me when I was your age... I'm 69 now. I have bands come in to play anolog or digital if they wish. Both going on at the same time, of course. Still, the anolog recordings always sound better to me. You young folks need to keep this up. Cheers!

Excellent video. The "Edit" function allows you to dump tape off a reel. For example: You want to join audio at the one minute mark, with audio at the three minute mark. You'd cut the tape, spool off (Edit) the excess tape, then cut the tape again to join the tape again and make the splice. Or if you have old tape that you want to dump off of a reel, you could use Edit to do it.

Thanks for that nice Video. You do it very well with a lot of creativity and in the old style of Recording. Your bouncing technik is great. You save the heart of the sound and it impressed me how good it works. Real2real recording is good for producing cause you must decide every time if its sounds good and then go forward. Decisions are make the way to finish works better. No way back. Thats the mirical. Love, peace and harmony Bernward

@@andypickeringmusic you're welcome! I actually laughed out loud when I read the bandcamp download had the "super 60s panned mix" because I am currently exploring that mix technique for a tune I'm working on. I'm applying "the doors" first album mix approach which is nearly identical except the vox is dead center. Keeping the drums on a mono channel is key and I'm glad you resisted the temptation to record drums in stereo on 'a different age' and stuck to the 4-tracker handbook you wrote!

Love the organ part, so 60's psyche sounding! I really liked much better the pre-mix, just before the final, with full dynamics. I think maybe too much processing in the end, better to listen, use the ears to not "overdo" or clutter a great sound. Ooh, 1/2". Fancy, shmancy. The more realistic upgrade was 8 track 1/4" back in the day. Yeah, we drooled over the 1/2", but that was significantly more expensive, even when bought used. I would've expected a bigger mixing console (desk) to go with that recorder. I started with an 8x4 with my 1/4" 8 track and upgraded to a 12x8 a year later. Not really while I'm recording, I'm not a film maker... Its all just gorilla style shooting / editing on my phone all the way till you get the final mix (which is obviously the proper finished audio)

3:29 basically edit pulls equal tension between both reels so you can scrub manually by rotating them, with some other machines there's a jog wheel, but it's for aligning tapes so you can cut them with an editing block to align two different takes
