Reel Review - Shimano Metanium MGL 150 B (2020 Shimano Metanium)
Спорт
The 2020 Metanium MGL 150 B is an awesome new reel from Shimano! We put it through the paces the past few months before weighing in with a review. With requests pouring in, its time to share our experiences. In a word, this reel is AWESOME!
Aside from the Metanium name, the reel is hardly recognizable when compared to its former counterparts. The Metanium MGL has reached new heights with features like a Magnesium frame, CoreSolid body (1 piece frame), and an MGL III Spool. The reel itself feels very similar to the Bantam but is several ounces lighter. The finished product is light weight, incredibly strong, and ultra smooth.
After fishing these reels hard for months we've seen no reduction in performance. They're as smooth as the day we opened the boxes, if not smoother. We've been using this reel for "finesse power" techniques. These are cross over techniques where you need the ability to throw light baits but you still need torque and power after you get the bite. It shines for jigs, small to mid-size crankbaits, keitechs, topwater, spinnerbaits, dock fishing, etc.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzread.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.
I have that same combo and it's incredible! The Poison Adrena deserves a review all in its own as well!!
Thanks for the product review TB. I'll be looking forward to that new Curado review. Take care and cant wait to see y'all on the TVA chain!
I have had my new Metanium paired with the Poison Adrena since April and I absolutely love that combo. I also use the Bantam with a G Loomis and I’m thrilled with both combos. I’m hoping to make a trip later this fall to Chickamauga with my brother, and stay with a friend who’s lived there for a few years, would love to connect. I’m thrilled for you guys to move to the area, and remember a few years ago when you visited Dale Hollow and Kentucky lake and other TVA fisheries....👍😎👍 welcome to your new home 👏👏👏
Been using Shimano reels for almost 25 years. Exclusively. Never any issues. Great video
I have this Metanium and love it. The spool capacity is great for long casts too. It's light, smooth and doesn't backlash.
Looks like Lake Chickamauga in the background! Can’t wait to see you guys on the water! Absolutely love the new 2020 Metanium!
Love the new Metaniums! Would love to see a video on how you are tuning yours for specifics techniques.
I’ve been fishing this reel for a few months. It’s unbelievable at light applications. Not quite BFS out of the box but damn close. It’s mostly on one of my bottom contact setups but I’ve used it for small top water like the pop-x or Rico, even threw a heddon tiny torpedo on it with no problems at all.
Finally! Been waiting for this video since it was teased
I really liked the “Different reel speeds/techniques” overview you provided under the video. It’s nice to see a compact easy to look at review such as that. If possible, maybe do the same for rods on your next rod review. Thanks. Hope you’re enjoying the new house!

That Poison Adrena + Metanium setup looks 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just ordered one, thanks for your video it made a difference.
Good review Matt... thank you for sharing.
Need more reviews like this!!!!!!!!! Love it!!!!!
Really enjoy all of your informative videos especially the recent ones with fishing techniques. Been fishing with the 2020 Metanium since May. The one issue I have with the reel is the side brake adjustment is very stiff and sometimes even difficult to adjust. Wished they made a smoother adjustment with clicks through the number settings. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this issue as well with their Metaniums.
Rolling with the new Metanium on my MegaBass P5 Madbull! Incredible combo!
Another great review brother. Can't wait to see the Curado review....
That new Curado 70 is gonna sell out fast everywhere. I can’t wait to see that review. And I even like to see the new Shimano SLX MGL 70.
It would be cool to see a tour of your new houses, or at least the backyards. I have two of the 150B HG reels. One I had to send back with a bad bearing. My only complaint with the new Metanium is I preferred the way the older versions palmed. Otherwise they are less finicky of a caster (exactly what Matt pointed out in this video) and the brass gears are awesome and should allow them to stay smooth longer. I'd also like to see a walk through of the Poison Adrena lineup. I have the 6'11 Medium Plus and I'm curious how it compares to the 7'3 MH and 7'2 H. I wish they would add a standard medium power spinning option.

I bet it has a [FISHING] (or ROD)-room in which you can easily get LOST if you didn’t have a GPS or MAP 😑😓
Can’t speak for the mgl but I have a 2013 metanium hg and it’s my favorite reel. I’ve had no issues and use at least three times a week. Just clean it, oil it and it’s ready to work.
Best bass channel on KZread!
Love the end of the year sales here in Japanland. Just scored this reel for Y29,100.!
Great information and matt or tim could we get a video on small frogs only and the setups you use for them?
just got my first metanium love it, i also have the curado 70 and in scorpion 70 i can bomb any bait with them near zero baxk lashes but they dont hold alot of line. Thanks Matt for review.
That's awesome, good video, y'all are so lucky to be able to use equipment I can't afford lol
I have that exact rod and reel combo and i love it!!!
I've had the new metanium for a couple months i like it so far and its one of my first baitcasters

I would like to see how you have this set up. Show the speed and tension the bait drops.
I wonder how light of lure weights the reel can handle. I'm talking about being able to throw tiny crappie jigs and stuff like that with it. I have the Shimano Calcutta conquest BFS hg from Japan, and I cast really tiny things with that reel. It has the smooth micro gears too.
would love to see you guys review the Abu Zenon MG-LTX and your opinion vs the Metanium MGL
With the size of my hands I can't go anything but a Shimano. The Scorpion DC is my #1, feels perfect.
SLX DC 70 vs Curado DC 70 please. Good vid and great work Matt.
I have my metanium 2020 on my NRX 853 and man it’s incredibly light and I feel everything. I love it 🎣😎
Im looking forward to the new Shimano Curado 70 MGL but on tacklewarehouse when the slx mgl was released the curado 70 and strangley a curado 300 also popped up under the shimano tab. I wonder if they plan to bring out a more affordable 300 size like they used too.
Second only to my Steez SV TW as far I reels that I love. Like it better than the latest Antares. Liked the first one that I got so much that I bought 2 more.
Nice and as always very informative appreciate yah big dawg #TightLines #HappyFishing
Would love to see a review of the Daiwa Tatula SV TW and Dobyns Fury Casting 734. 😀
Imo the metanium is the best all around reel. Yes it’s expensive, but if you do your homework, you can get them shipped from Japan for under $300. There’s simply not a better reel out there for $280. It’s so smooth it’s a dream to fish. Quietest and smoothest reel I’ve owned.
That poison adrena is what I’m pairing the metanium too. I want this reel and rod to be my skipping set up for jigs and worms/ etc but was wondering if getting a 8:1 is too fast for bottom baits because i have the Curado dc and I use it for bottom baits and it’s a 7:3. I seen in y’all’s speed/techniques y’all use a lower speed than this for bottom baits, I’m assuming it’s all about preference. Also do you use a heavy rod for flipping/skipping or do u use a med-heavy. I was thinking probably getting the rod in a 7,2. Its crazy because if I go and asked every pro fisherman their opinion they will all give me a different answer
Review the Poison adrena!!!!!!!!! Which ones you like and which one you dont like. How does it compare to the rest of your high end rods?????
That reel looks to be pretty sweet.
Would love to a an in-depth review on the new imx pro 863c keitech rod
Can u do another video on the slx and the slx dc of how they held up for you

Jimmy McKamie yeah that’s the same time they did last year but be good for maybe 6month intervals ? For people now getting into it (since covid) and the people who don’t wanna throw away there money on sub-par rods/reels😬
What would be a perfect reel for swim jigs in heavy cover or thick grass? I’m switching out from lews and already have the chronarch and very happy with it
Have a curious question? Do you maintain your own reels and if you do: do you have any little "tweeks" you do to a new reel? (Cleaning two basic bearings/pipe) I think there is a whole rabbit hole you could go down on this subject...
Metanium reels like butter. I just bought an anteras. Metanium best retrieve out there. What is smoother?
If you haven't bought one yet, do it. I have the 151hg and xg paired up with megabass rods. Insanely light weight setup to fish all day long. I own other highend brands and these are my favorite.

@@kayakfishingforpredators9107 Same combo here. That x-bite is simply amazing. Now i'm questioning some of my NRX rods being around.
Learning to pitch and flip. Would the Metanium MGL be a good choice?
I still use the 13 Met and a lot of the 16 Mets and I have 3 of the 20 Mets and I just love these reels! Only reels I still have that’s not Mets are some of the old 200E6 and 200E7 reels they are also work horse reels
What would you say? How does the Metanium stand jerkbaiting? Could i use it to cast far with lures from like 3/16oz to like 5/8-3/4oz? Just curious. Or if you didn’t recommend this reel, what would be good by your opinions?
I fish for Giant Snakeheads in Thailand. I am deciding between the new Shimano Metanium and the Bantom MLG PG(JDM) to go with a Exsence DC SS XG. I already have a couple of the older Metanium MLG's and love them. I am wanting something to fish medium size swimbaits, chatterbaits, and other slower moving baits that these bad attitude critters like. Thanks for any advice you can give.
As a high school angler it’s so hard to have these really high end reels. But I know someday I will have these and it’s awesome to have this information. But if you could do a reel in the 100-120 dollar range that would be amazing. Just do one that’s most requested by your viewers
Would you recommend this reel for frogging in medium to heavy slop? Debating on the new metanium 150 mgl and Bantam mgl for frog duty and possible flipping/pitching
Unrelated to rods n reels but this has been bugging (or one may say bug baiting) me for a while: have you ever talked about: 1. Inline spinners like Mepps for Bass fishing. 2. Steelshad brand blade baits. Would love to know your thoughts, or referring to where you have done so. bassincerely yours!
These metaniums are crazy good, can cast a mile!!!
I just picked up the metanium dc using it for pitching and flipping. do you think that’s a good for that? Will the mgl be good for chatter baits?

Do a review on diawa tatula lt I have one and I like it more than the shimano stradic ci4+ (I personally favor shimano reels most of the time)
Give us a review about the Poison Adrena rods. I am wanting either an Expride 72MH or the Poison 73MH for texas rigs and all purpose fishing. Is it worth the up grade to the Poison or put my money into something else like a high end reel IE Metanium.

Lew’s doesn’t offer anything that compares to the Metanium. Pro-Ti is the top end Lew’s reel, followed by the Hypermag. $349 and $299 respectively. They are pretty much Bantam and Chronarch competitors. I do own a Hypermag (that I got on heavy discount) and it’s a really, really light and nice reel.

Hard time choosing between this or the bantam. Only usually run 1 rod and reel until I get a boat in the future. Not gonna be throwing anything above 3/4 once. Pls help
In the price point would you say the chronarch mgl is the best reel
Beginner question here. What is 150 stands for? Is it 150yard? or 150metre?
Why you're always around Shimano? Would be great to see reviews of Daiwa products like Lexa HD, Steez SV TWS, Tatula 300 etc.
many can go the jdm route for a lot less. i was able to snag one new on ebay for $305 with $25 shipping. you can still find them for well under $350 and the shipping from overseas is pretty fast. i will say at $305 it's the best reel money can buy. so good i immediately bought another from japan. keep in mind though jdm models carry the 85mm handles and 100 size spool. the knobs are slightly smaller on the jdm as well which many might prefer. overall though, it's almost the perfect reel; only if shimano would lower the thumb bar and close the gap between thumb bar and spool.

Until you break one and Shimano tells you about their limited year warranty. St Croix and Loomis have the best warranties, where even if its your fault, you can get a replacement for less then MSRP. For me it's a no-brainer, I'd never drop that much money on a rod that wasn't a Loomis or St Croix.

Honestly I feel like reels are more important than high end rods. I own from megabass destroyer to cheap $100 fate 13 rods. I have tried my bros conquest, nrx, imx and i can say theres not much difference in sensitivity except for weight. A decent brand $100+ is almost as sensitive as a nrx now a days, but a good reel makes a huge difference. No need to spend $500 when todays 100-200 rods are very good, but I do love the light weight of those expensive rods.
@twiggsherman3641

@@paoslee all my rods are the old Shimano compre's with the EVA handles and the technique specific actions. They had a lifetime warranty. I just recently decided to try a newer rods, as these things are all 8 years old. I was annoyed when I found out Shimano did away with their lifetime warranty, I was looking at some Zodias, but because of the warranty changes, I went with a St Croix Mojo bass with the SC III blank. For a 150 dollar rod, it's amazing. I paired it with my Lews Hypermag, and the combo weighs practically nothing. I use it for my senkos. It has a 5 year warranty, and even after the warranty period I can get a new rod for less then MSRP. Not that I break rods much, but stuff happens, and I'd rather go with a company that stands behind their products and gives the consumer some piece of mind.
