Reefer Madness (1936)

Reefer Madness (1936) [Enhanced]
This unabashed propaganda film is most popularly known as Reefer Madness, but originally known by the title Tell Your Children, a dead giveaway, has become a cult classic of comically bad cinema due to its dated, alarmist views on the dangers of "marijuana addiction" and the exaggerated symptoms thereof. After the onscreen prologue that declares "Something must be done to wipe out this ghastly menace," Reefer Madness launches into a case study of clean-cut WASP couple Bill (Kenneth Craig) and Mary (Dorothy Short), high schoolers who play tennis and drink tea on the back porch. Their friend Jimmy (Warren McCollum) introduces them to a pot dealer named Jack (Carleton Young), who invites Bill up to his den of inequity, where stoned ne'er-do-wells laugh fiendishly, dance, and play the piano. After one joint, Bill is hooked, and his life begins to plummet down the tubes -- he starts flunking school and becomes a promiscuous regular in Jack's apartment. When a worried Mary tracks Bill down, she too is given a joint and begins giggling uncontrollably while being aggressively fondled by the bizarre addict Ralph (Dave "Tex" O'Brien). When Bill bursts out of the bedroom to tangle with Ralph, hallucinating and blacking out, Mary is accidentally shot. This prompts a string of guilt and calamitous occurrences, including several more deaths and courtroom sentences to mental institutions, all because of the devil weed. The film ends with the ominous warning, "The dread marijuana may be reaching forth next for your son or YOURS!"
Note: some minor enhancement work was done to improve the quality of the old source picture and soundtrack. Nothing was added or removed. Enjoy this full free movie!

So drug dealers in the 1930's were well dressed, they would come find you instead of you having to find them, they would offer you free drugs, and they would offer you a place to consume these drugs while being very hospitable...what a time to be alive.

IKR? I had luck with my parents. Theirs were the opposite. Like both of my parents had their father drinking heavily and smoking heavily as well, they even continued when they cirrhosis and lung cancer, so they told me that if i don't control myself i'll end up like them. Though i do smoke cigs a lot (my sin ain't 4 packs a day like my dad/grandads, it's a pack a day like my mom but still), but i ain't an alcoholic. I smoke hash three times a day as well. But i ain't beating up a wife or being arrested like my grandads, just smoking my joints and blunts looking happy as always :).

It even states on the bottle “ powerful sedative and narcotic”. I took 4 drops of it, which made my tongue go numb and 1hr later I had a light high from it. I couldn’t believe, that 90 year old THC was still potent. Bought that little 4oz bottle from a collector, and payed 120 € for it.

Jack Jameson its the gateway drug theory. which isnt true or false. depends on person. So a kid dies of herion od, because he smoked weed once at a party, loved the high and eventually got on harder drugs. Who says kids like that dont have an inclination for drugs anyway? Who says he wouldnt have snorted cocaine at a party and done the same thing? All drugs are gateway drugs. But legalizing marijuana wouldnt increase our drug problem, it would decriminalize 3/5 of drug users in america

From my understanding, the movie related marijuana consumption to encreasing violence rather than to working hard and/or faster. Indeed, coffee is legal, but that's, probably, because it's related to the heart and the blood pressure. Marijuana and other drugs affects the brain (e.g. hallucinations, deleting info from the brain, aggressivity, etc.).

The reason it was banned had nothing to do with work, people had been using it for 10,000 years with no issues in relation to work. The pharmaceutical industry wanting to push prescription medications and a failing cotton industry is the reason why hemp/cannabis was prohibited.

According to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention, a US government agency, from 2006-2010 88,000 Americans died every year due to alcohol. In comparison just over 58,000 Americans died in the entire Vietnam War. My government tells me marijuana is illegal but alcohol, which kills 30,000 more Americans every year than died in the entire Vietnam War, is legal. The United States government has no justification in the year 2018 for making marijuana illegal let alone a "schedule 1 drug." The United States government is openly opposing the Democratic will of the American people. It's really sad and pathetic. This is also why we need term limits so we don't have dinosaurs dictating how our society is run.

I am glad to see some people are on the right track as to the source of the deception. I am shocked that no one knows the real culprits are the corporations. The brain washing is so complete that people are not aware of it even today. Pharmaceuticals knew "reefer" would cut into their profits and so paid the gov to bad talk it. As well as rope making companies. Hemp is stronger, cheaper, and longer lasting than plastic rope. But the oil companies have to sell more oil. Plastic comes from oil. The oil corporations paid the gov to lie and brainwash you all. And your still swallowing the tripe, blaming the gov, when the real bad guys are the corporations.

A lot want it legalised but typically the G drag their feet on something that people want, but rush other laws thru like lightening when it works in the Gs favour. It's a natural plant, no natural growing plant should be illegal. Especially since a man's body is his own!!

@@ChrisG3253032 For sure, I do think it's changing though. The world is chanting "legalize it" :) I would never advise the excessive use of anything. Everything can be a vice if you let it, from doughnuts to PCP. Heck, there's plenty of things I can buy at the home improvement store that can get you high AF, they are perfectly legal and much more dangerous to health than marijuana. I think we should teach the truth to our children, and hope they end up making a decent decision. If you can't live in a world that has drugs the solution is not to eliminate drugs.. they are here to stay, we must learn to live amongst them the best we can.

I’ll never forget the time at a ‘special assembly’ back in high school around 1964. It was about 7 months after JFK was assassinated and the local sheriff’s department sent in a couple of narcotics officers to lecture the student body about the dangers of ‘the killer weed, marihuana’ after playing the movie Reefer Madness for the audience on the big screen in the auditorium. The two officers were dressed casually in civilian clothes and tried acting ‘super-cool’ and ‘hip’, but in reality, they sounded like a diatribe from Sgt. Joe Friday on a 1960’s Dragnet episode. The lead speaker finished up the presentation by passing around 6 supposed ‘joints’ to the students for examination, but suddenly became red-faced and burst into an apoplectic rage when he received 7 back up on stage. Once he angrily revealed what had happened a majority of the students present burst into hilarious laughter. The officers stormed off the stage shortly and were thereafter followed up by the mortified principal who took the microphone and vehemently berated whoever had contributed the additional joint, as well as all of us who so heartily laughed from our seats. Little did he realize at the moment that what had just occurred marked the beginning of the era of the biggest revolt against the country’s social beatitudes by America’s youth in the history of the nation.

They commit unspeakable acts such as mass murder along with shoplifting, jaywalking and wearing their pants on the ground. Recreational weed will soon be legal here in California, and many horrible deeds are almost certain to follow.

Go back to bed, cover your head with a pillow, and for God's sake, don't open the door. Have your food & grocery needs delivered + be extremely careful with mail/pkg handling. Wash your hands often & avoid drafts, black mold, etc. Only drink & bathe in bottled water. You are going to be ok! You are safe! Stay indoors & be sure that all doors & windows (assuming you have them) are locked. As an added word of caution; avoid white rabbits, yellow submarines, psychedelic shacks, and Puff the Magic Dragon. 😁

Only because the lawyers are being paid by the corporations. Corporations are the head of the snake.

Little factoid: The church group that made this film was inspired by the Victor Licata murder case of 1933 to propagandize against pot. He did actually murder his family with an ax in Tampa Florida while stoned. But the weed isn't why he did it. The court appointed psychiatrists determined he was a paranoid schizophrenic with homicidal idealizations. They left that inconvenient detail out in the FBI scene when discussing the murders, leaving the viewer to believe it was weed and not Licata's mental disorder that was responsible.

So glad we have come a long way since this came out and found out our bodies have an Endocannabinoid system! The endogenous cannabinoid system-named for the plant that led to its discovery-is one of the most important physiologic systems involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells.

Exactly what the teachers in my school thought (I graduated in 1971) you could get three years in prison for possession of a joint. I remember a joint was found near me, (NOT MINE) and I watched as they tore it apart slowly as if a science experiment. this vice principal was amazed that a narcotic could have found it's way to Jacksonville,Il. Every time I was in his office I would see it on his shelf (the not mine joint) .The joints in those days were so mild you wouldn't even know if you were high. It's a thousand times better today. No one ever found the owner of that joint, I hope when they find him they throw the book at him! I'm not sure what book exactly.
