RedWing Moc Toe 875 Boot resole with Vibram Christy 4014 Soles

In this video we will be resoling a pair of Redwing 875 boots with a new pair of Vibram Christy soles model number 4014.
As always we will replace the cork and stitch a new mid sole on the good year welt and condition the leather with some Saphir Oiled Leather Cream also known as Greasy Cream.

    That was pretty interesting. It's nice to see folks still embracing "old world" craftsmanship; using machines from an age when America made the best machines in the world. Hard work in a necessary profession is so much more than just admirable; it's a reflection of character and integrity. When my Red Wings are ready for some love, I hope I can find someone like this to care for them.

    Very educational. Love how you take your time to document every detail. One of the better cobbler videos I stumbled upon! Love your methodical explanation of the Craft specially the stitching, gluing and pressing! I am re-soling a Prada boot with a Vibram 1375 Bifida sole and decided to use a leather midsole to strengthen the build. Will also add cork. Would have loved to see how you attached the cork and what thickness of cork was used and I assume you glued that as well? You are extremely talented. Thank you for teaching me some new skills which I will need to master.

In a prior video you talked about “cold transfer“ of other Vibram soles compared to the softer Christy souls. Id like to change out the Christys on my Red Wings for a somewhat more aggressive tread but the possibility of Al old transfer” in the winter as well as the foot softness is a concern. Any suggestions or am I trying to over too many bases?

    I REALLY like your use of sheet cork. Seems thicker and therefore more cushioning than the glue slurry stuff. However, other cobblers' videos make it appear that they run it to the outside of the sole. I must be wrong, because it's filler and it seems it would sink in the middle, but that's how it appears.

    So you don't restitch welts with a machine because it weakens the seem due to trouble lining up with existing holes. Yet you manage to line up when you sewed the mid-sole with this machine? I know I am missing something. Great job by the way.

  • @CobblersPlus

    @CobblersPlus

    With a machine that stitches a new welt on you can’t adjust the machine to that level for the stitches to make it in the same wholes and there are less options for the needle size. Where the machine that stitches the sole through the welt I use the thinnest needles I can so they bend into the original holes and the machine works better on adjusting the stitch length

    Way more than a pair of boots is worth. Up to $200 depending on how far they have to go but thats for double sole, a cheaper option is the thin sole for around $150 locally. As far as work boots, It's more for the guy who has a hard time finding good boots, has a pair of $500 boots or a pair where nostalgia is involved. I had it done for years when a good pair of boots was $400 but now the same boots are under $150.

    Hello! I am writing from Hungary, I have an old Wolverine boot. I can't find Vibram insoles for refurbishing in Hungary. If you could send me an address where I can order soles, my American friends will bring them to Hungary! Thank you very much! Zoltán from Hungary

    The 1907 have a slightly different last so are a touch deeper and easier to break in. Not a huge difference though. Also the construction of the Goodyear welt is slightly different, they are triple stitched. These things are minor though tbh, depends which leather finish you like more I’d say.

    Vibrams have the same tread pattern as Thorogood soles so are they the same? i'm going to resole my redwings but I much prefer Thorogood Maxwear soles.

  • @CobblersPlus

    @CobblersPlus

    4 жыл бұрын

    They look the same at first glance but the Maxwear sole is all crape with a 3/8 rubber sole where the Vibram is a solid sole that is a form of crape that has a higher concentration of rubber than regular crape. The Maxwear are great but the crape is to soft and even if the rubber holds up the crape starts to collapse or dry rot to fast.

  • @edrader

    the maxwear soles on my thorogoods are solid just like the redwing crepe soles but a different composition that I think is more durable (does not wear out as fast). there is no rubber over it. the soles on my thorogoods look to be the same soles you used in this video. so I suspect Vibram makes soles for Thorogood? you know thororgood used to have soles that wore out quickly but they upgraded a few years ago and like I said the ones i'm referring to look like the soles you used on this resole.

  • @CobblersPlus

    Originally that was how the Maxwear soles were made. Must have been changed at some point. Vibram used to make soles for a lot of the boot makers like RW and some companies they style do. It may be that they do it for Thorogood still but a few companies over they years had Vibram only put the brand name of the boot company.

    thanks it's been a few years since they made the change :-) the reason I want to find out is because I love the Thorogood soles and I can get them but they are twice as much as the Vibrams. but if the vibrams are the same thing then i'll just spec Vibrams when I get my boots resoled. but I really want the black Thorogood soles for my redwing 8138s, I appreciate the help!
