Reducing Pine Bark Beetles & Tractor Getting Old

I discovered a situation with my old logging tractor. It’s a Massey Ferguson MF 30 MF 34 with a Farmi logging winch. I also discovered another situation with some pine bark beetles. We will be taking some steps to reduce the pine bark beetle population. A part of forest management on the West Coast involves dealing with pine bark beetles. The beetles can breed in fresh cut slash and logs, or storm damage. From there they can spread to live trees. We will be trying to prevent the pine beetles from spreading to other trees.

    It's been said that: One should always rather catch the can than kick it... The dreaded Ips beetles in the Ponderosa pines; I hate 'em as much as Poison oak, if that's possible. The "Tree School" OSU-Extension folks REALLY need to get you and your winching savvy on the curriculum. Another likeroo from your neighbour to the North.

    I hate the ips even more than poison oak. Maybe the OSU folks could just point them to my winching videos. it might be fun to get on their curriculum though.

    I always enjoyed watching you catching that can. I guess it doesn’t take much to me happy. I for one am going to miss that old can. Hopefully I can find it in my heart to appreciate that new can as much as the old can. Kind of like replacing an old dog with a new one. He won’t be the same but you love him anyway.

    Get yourself one of those flap toppers for the tractor exhaust. It cost a bit more than a free can, but it keeps the rain out, AND brings a pleasant tapping sound at a low idle. In thick woods you wont wonder where you left the tractor anymore.

    I think I can, I think I can. I did not know the beetles ate the bark and that killed the tree. I thought it was larvae eating the cambium layer. I have spudded off the bark and found hundreds maybe thousands of larvae. Interestingly enough they are all gone in the morning when I go to move the bark to the burn pile. I think the fox, or the skunks eat them. I would love a beetle live cycle story please.

  • @WilsonForestLands

    @WilsonForestLands

    Yeah it’s the larva eating the cambium and layers under the bark. The adults were in there too. I’m not sure if those were the adults who laid the eggs or if those are the new adults getting ready to fly. There was a little mishap with the video where I showed the larva and explained those are Ips beetles.

  • @WilsonForestLands

    @WilsonForestLands

    This is 160 acres. I bought it somewhere around 25 years ago when real estate prices were a lot lower. Right now it might cost about 5 times as much to buy it. The price of land has increased much more than the price of wood. Today it’s difficult to find a piece of land you can buy around here and get it to pay off from the wood on the land. Not impossible but hard. You bring up good questions and it’s a little complex to answer the milling profit side here, it may be a good video topic.
