I remember when I read the original story, I also felt the same way about the parents. Yes, I know it is a story, but I do think it is funny that it never occurred to the husband/dad to go directly to the fairy and ask if he could buy the rapunzel for the salad or even work in the garden to earn some. It just baffled me how it instantly went to 'Oh let me just steal them' sorry but no telling what she would have grown up around thinking was alright when you have a mom who can't be told no and a dad who steals. Anyway I was glad when Disney went their own path with this one, because there is just a lot with the original. 😝

I really like her as an ogress, and it's definitely staying true to the original story while still giving her a happy ending. I also enjoyed learning about the previous stories about her and Rapunzel.

I LOVED your twist on Mother Gothel. On asking someone if they're pregnant, I was waiting at the school gate to pick up my daughter, chatting to another mum who I knew well enough to ask how the thing they went to on the weekend went, but wouldn't expect she would confide in me. Anyway, the weather was cold and she was wearing a hoodie with a big pocket on the front, but just something about her looked pregnant, so I asked. Of course she said no, and I was sooooo embarrassed!!! but she wasn't offended -luckily!!! About a week later she was waiting at the school gate with a baby girl in her arms. Given our previous conversation, I asked if she was babysitting. She said no, the baby is hers. She didn't know she was pregnant when I asked her!!!! Not suggesting you are pregnant or anything, you just reminded me of that story.

That's wild! I JUST had a baby and had the opposite happen. A week before I had her, I had two people at church ask if I'd had the baby already, and I was like, "Umm... no..." I felt HUGE, so I wasn't sure how they weren't sure but I guess the big hoodie I was wearing hid things more than I realized! I also stick by this rule to NEVER ask a woman if she's pregnant. I had a friend who very much looked pregnant but I didn't ask and later found out she was NOT, so I saved myself a lot of embarrassment there... Always better to be safe than sorry!

I think this represents the true mother gothel and I am so happy with hearing the history of this character! I hope you do this with more villains even if they don't look like the Disney version in the end!

I LOVE not only Ogre Gothel, but all the info from the original stories. You did a beautiful job! This video was so interesting, it FLEW by! I was NOT surprised though that the story has the prince falling in love with Rapunzel at 15. I just watched Disney's Sleeping Beauty again, and she meets the prince and they fall for each other on her 16th birthday.

ok i didn't expect you would shrek-tify her but omg your design works so well i love it 😍 when it comes to the Disney-version i think the only way Gothel would work as a kind person would be that she steps in after the death of Rapunzel's mum. maybe as an auntie or something similar to be a female person of trust for the girl.

We use the Mother Gothel song Mother Knows Best in a course for women who have been in abusive relationships. It is such a good example of how control and manipulation can be used in relationships. Loved this explanation of the story and love love the end result.

Okay - the twist at the end! Into an ogre! Of course, it makes sense with the name “little parsley” - right? When I saw this video, before I clicked on it, I had NO idea where you were going, and I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. Disney Villains are usually complex, and Mother Gothel is a personal favorite (Mother knows best - great song). However, I am so impressed with your research! Those stories - both the Grimm version and the Italian version are amazing. I’m going to look up the Italian version today! Great job! Thank you for all of that work! Ursula (the Sea Witch) could be a great one as well, and Snow White’s step-mother - the fairest?? There’s got to be a story there!

From what I have heard, The Grimm brothers traveled the world collecting stories for their book. They just merged stories that were similar. That's probably why their story doesn't fully fit the original but very closely does. By the way, love the transformation you made. I genuinely liked it more than I was expecting.

What do you mean "the original"? Brothers Grimm were often the first ones to write down these stories because not many people were able to write and read back then. Yes, they travelled across the country to gather stories. But what is "the original" in your eyes? Disney just took fairytales and made them kid-friendly, these are not originals. They often had a grim ending (pun intended).

Adding the deepest lore back story for this art makeovers absolutely makes this vid! More of this. :)

When I saw the picture of your redesign I thought "What was she thinking???", but now, with all your thoughts behind it, it's really awesome :D I love how you dug through all the stories and combined them!

The brothers Grimm did not write the fairy tales, they gathered folk stories that where only passed on by mouth, and put them to paper, thats why there are so many different versions of a similar story, they had to choose and adapt best they could.

If she was kind and caring, she would take care for her own daughter, which she abandoned to kidnap Rapunzel.

I was active duty when I was pregnant with my son. I was also relatively small through most of my pregnancy. When I was about 20 weeks, one of the older civilians at work asked “you’re like 12 weeks, right?” When I told him no, and how far along I was, he got wide eyed and was like “omg you’re so small. Is your baby ok?!” I ended up sitting in my car crying for like 45 minutes wondering if my baby was in fact ok. Contrast to a few months later, I took some leave, came back and everyone was like “damn, you got huge!” 😐 I’m sorry you even had to say anything about this in this day and age. I really enjoyed the deep dive into Mother Gothel, and how this page turned out ❤️

If you ever need a quick place to begin a deep dive on disney origin stories, I recommend the creator jon solo. It's his specialty, and can set you in the right direction for more research. With that out of the way, I love your art! I think it's just right and that you manage to incorporate the vast changes of this classic story over many centuries. Undoubtedly people from the 1800s would have used it completely different than somebody from the new millennium. I mean how many of us can actually keep a straight face? Let's just yeet our kid because my baby mama can't go without her fairy salad! That's not ridiculous at all...

Finally, another one of these videos!! What an amazing notification on my phone to wake up to! :D Although I was not prepared for the full recap of the Grimm version of the story over breakfast. I wonder - but don't want to know :P - what on earth was going on in their heads when they wrote all those horrible stories! :O And to think that someone actually wrote an even worse version than that ...? Makes you wonder if the Grimm brothers were just trying to make it more child friendly XD But it was really cool that you dug up the Italian Rapunzel story - honestly I didn't even know Rapunzel was a Grimm story, so I had no clue of the story's origin. I had the Barbie version as my first, although I did always have a feeling that the story was inspired from some other fairytale, I just didn't know who wrote it. But I agree with you, the Disney version of the villain is the best, and on behalf of all those people who realized their parents were actually abusive after watching Tangled, I'm so glad Disney did what they did with her as a character.

I like changing her to an Ogre, especially a Shrek-inspired Ogre. It fits how both Shrek and Tangled are twists on fairy tales. Plus, Shrek's theme is about finding your own beauty, rather than just relying on conventions.

Sarah, you not only are an artist, your also a detective and a storyteller. When is your first novel hitting the presses? Oh, oh, oh, something similar to a child's story that you can colour in with pencils or any medium ? Yes, I know its been done before, but not with an Australian twist.

There are retellings where Rapunzel’s mother was actually the selfish one, possibly narcissistic, the father a victim of the mother, and Mother Gothel protected Rapunzel from the toxic family and lack of love for her own.

Actually, Disney Gothel did once have a child of her own, as revealed in the canon ‘Rapunzels Tangled Adventure’ (Major spoilers for the series ahead) The child was abandoned when Gothel stole Rapunzel, and found by the head of the Royal guard, who took her in as his own, the child eventually forgot about Gothel, and how she was abandoned, and once Rapunzel returned to the kingdom, she ended up as her lady in waiting, and the two became close friends. However, the child, named Cassandra, always felt like Rapunzel had always gotten more, a sentiment shared in songs sung by Cassandra, such as ‘waiting in the wings’ and ‘crossing the line’, and once she found out that her birth mother, Gothel, had abandoned her for Rapunzel, she became bitter and resentful. There’s much more to the story than that, and I highly suggest that you watch the series, it’s really good!

I haven't seen Tangled at all but I loved the deep dive on Rapunzel and I am in love with your ogre Gothel!

I'm late for this one (new baby won't give me time to watch anything anymore lol but I'm slowly catching up!) I never watched Untangled but I remember having a Disney book when I was a kid with the old version of Rapunzel. I remember Mother Gothel being a witch and the dad stealing a bunch of vegetables and in the end when she found out about the prince she cut her hair short and sent her away to the forest and when the prince went to the tower to visit her, Mother Gothel was the one that threw the braided hair to him. When he got to the top and saw the witch he got so scared he fell down into a bunch of thorns and went blind. He finds Rapunzel in the forest and her tears heals his eyes. I love your version and all this lore about Petrosinella and how you changed it to fit that story!

Well, the garden was magic and made her purposely want that specific Rapunzel/Greens. She wasn’t dramatic, it was magic. But yeah- good story, coloring.

TLDR: great video & fairytales are great! Love your work. Good examination of the underlying horror of the fairytale. Inspired by your analysis, I read both the first and last version of the Rapunzel stories in German - I never really realised that various versions were available. The latest one - without the premarital sex - is definitely the version I grew up with. I spend some years in my late teenage years reading every fairytale book i could get my hands on, particularly the German ones. Interestingly the German fairytale is/was a specific genre of fiction and not really aimed just at children. They were also not all stories collected by Grimms out of oral story telling traditions. The Grimms Bros collected ‘Volksmärchen’ (folk tales), while the authored stories are known as ‘Kunstmärchen’ (literally: art fairy tales). There are some great German fairytales written by authors like Goethe and, my favourite, Wilhelm Hauff, for example. The Nutcracker is a great story by ETA Hoffmann. Particularly folk tales are so much darker and horrific than any Disney movie could cope with. I really love the genre. The banishment of young women with children, dismemberment, bones that speak, etc are recurring tropes in stories that are captured from oral delivery. My great grandmother used to tell us some scary ones from her Transylvanian childhood, involving wolves etc. we used to love hearing the gore. Some years ago I heard an interview with a children’s book author who first framed my understanding of the role of these stories for me: they are a safe way to experience horror, build an emotional repertoire - of fear and resilience but also empathy and kindness. The act of listening and digesting fuels and builds imagination. The author (whose name I have forgotten) very movingly told of working with young offenders in a reading program and discovering that most of them had never had any stories read to them and simply did not have the ability to imagine situations - they didn’t have the empathy to think about how they would affect other people. I honestly think it’s a bit sad that people’s understanding of fairytales comes mostly from Disney versions of Grimms. There’s so much more to them… and don’t get me started about how interesting fairy tales from other cultures are. The one thing they have in common, though, is major plot holes - as you so eloquently point out! So, suspension of disbelief is definitely required to enjoy the stories (at least at first- then you can go ahead and dissect the politically incorrect, sexist, racist horrific mess that is built into these stories and speaks directly to the time and place these stories were written and created). Sorry about the length of this comment. I just love fairytales.

I don’t know what it says about my age but as much as I love Disney’s versions of old folk tales. Sometimes they really twist them around. Maybe they decide to make her a princess cause it fancy more little girls? Even though my favourite is Beauty and the Beast the Disney version is very very far from the original one. The original is more fairy tale-ish. With symbols of three etc. Love that you dug this deep into the history of Rapunzel. Mother Gothel witch/sorceresse/fairy/ogresse looks so stunning as pregnant, she is radiant. ❤❤❤❤

Yes, but if you look at the source material for "Beauty and the Beast" Disney did a complete reverse. Their adaptation is actually darker and edgier, especially since the original story doesn't have Gaston and Belle isn't an only child with just her father.

Also, if Mufasa was a better brother and demanded the kingdom treat Scar with the same respect as a prince as they treated him as King. Laos, if Mufasa didn't gas Simba up to show the same superiority to Scar. Mufasa never put Zazu or anyone in their place for talking down to Scar, but he was always ready to growl at Scar and demand of him. I personally think that's what pushed him. Scar was sad about the throne but he didn't just snap and decide to take it. I firmly believe that what you said and Mufasa being a garbage and arrogant sibling are what contributed to it.

I recommend it. It's a typical sanitised Disney version with songs and cutesy characters, but it's actually quite a lot of fun to watch.

Just like how Disney made a movie focusing on Maleficent and Cruella de Vil, I'd love a movie focusing on Gothel, now that I think about it!

if anyone loves these types of stories from the Grimm brothers, and you like musicals, I highly recommend Into The Woods! The original Broadway show is on KZread, and it has a few different tales, including Rapunzel, little red riding hood, Jack and the beanstalk, and Cinderella! They're all much closer to the Grimm brothers tales, and even get intertwined. There's also the movie on Disney plus. Hope anyone who sees this likes the musical/movie

I love the Tangled version, but the ogre take I never knew of. Perhaps she uses the power to hide that side of herself. A what if or remake with the ogre would be interesting to say the least.

I had an idea - if mother Goethel is good, then maybe in this reality a thief stole the baby (to try ransom ?) and Mother goethel found/ grabbed the baby & not knowing where is came from, raised it. (She was an elderly lady, and slowly grew younger as she raised the baby. Maybe handing a child around brought out the youth in her? But as the child gets older - mother goethel gets younger. not understanding the strange glow from Rapunzel’s hair, but knowing that any bandit or merchant would try to take her and use this magic for ill gains, mother gothel moved into the tall tower to hid her magic away to protect her. Too bad there wasn’t word that far from home about the missing princess)

Imagine the Disney Remake based on the Grimms Version, but with a black Rapunzel and black prince 😅

This was actually a really interesting journey into the history of the story of "Rapunzel." I had no idea there was an oder version of it. I don't think you took it too far, you just took a different fork in the road. Good blend of old and new.
