Redox Reaction Experiment

This video shows how two aqueous salt solutions are made, examines their electrical conductivity and the outcome of adding a copper wire to the solutions and pure water. It has been designed for teaching introductory chemistry and is supported by the National Science Foundation (grant number 1525557).

    In the second beaker silver nitrate, you add that silver accumulates on copper wire.

    Hi! I'm wondering, what's the concentration of the silver nitrate in the second beaker? Would the concentration have a noticeable effect on the reaction, or does it not matter?

  • @resakelly2625

    @resakelly2625

    3 жыл бұрын

    I did not calculate the concentration when I did this experiment - so the solution is of unknown concentration. If the concentration were known, I might be able calculate the amount of copper it would take to react completely or I could predict the amount of solid that is formed. if I also knew the amount of copper used. Additionally, a more concentrated solution, might have an effect on the reaction rate, but we would need to study this to find out.

    Room temperature, but I did not record the temperature. It was not a hot day, nor cold maybe about 70 deg. F. I was not specific in the amount of water that was added. I just wanted to see what happened when the wire was placed in the different solutions.

    Could you write me the Formula for what is happening here? I get that the silver nitrate is reduced and that the copper is oxidised, but how would you write this Ionic equation in its entirety?

  • @resakelly2625

    @resakelly2625

    3 жыл бұрын

    I could write the equation, but I wish not to. I hope this does not upset you. The purpose of the videos I make is to serve as a tool for instructors to have students discuss what they view. I would rather not prevent them from being able to have a meaningful conversation about it. However, If you can find a General Chemistry textbook, search for redox reactions, you should find a solution. OpenStax.org has textbooks available for free.

    (Cu2+ + 2No3- ) ---> (Cu + 2No3 - + 2e -). E(V) = -0.34V (2AgNo+ + 2No3- + 2e- ) ---> (2Ag + 2No3-) E(V)= 0.80 ∆E(V)= 0.46v ----> Reaction proceeds as written. You get 0.46V per mole ratio; set multiple reactions in series and you can get higher DC voltage. Since we know that E(v)cell is positive the free gibs formula ∆G=-n*F*E(v) predicts that the reaction is spontaneous; which it is as evident in the video. So you get 2 moles of solid silver for each mole of copper anion in solution.

    I want students to compare how the copper wire responds when it is placed in pure water, aqueous silver nitrate and aqueous copper(II) nitrate. Then I want students to examine the three key pieces of evidence: the electrical conductance of the solutions before and after the reaction, think about what it is that accumulates on the wire and what happens to the solution in which the reaction takes place? What do you think happens?

    @@resakelly2625 The electric conductivity is from the solution decreasing in pH... from HNO3 a strong acid formed in the reaction. I think what is happening is the free silver ions are swapping place in solution with the solid copper, as evidence by the water changing to a copper color. Why the solid copper attracts the silver ions I am trying to figure out. Maybe you can answer this for me? Funny it has been a year since your comment lol
