REDNECK VAN LIFE + TROUT for breakfast, ALASKA style
I'm off on a mini road trip with my 1979 Ford van the "Iron Blueberry" in Interior Alaska. Who said van life had to be fancy? I also catch a rainbow trout for breakfast. Life is good!

It's funny, I just spent $500 for a 2001 2wd 4runner, did some engine updates and took the back seats out and just yesterday, threw a bed in the back and camped out in it. I will say, July in TX is a bit brutal for camping without a fan of some kind at night. Good stuff in this video, very inspiring! You need your own Discovery Channel show. @@rsprockets7846 It's Alaska. Of course there are bear and Wolves around! ... I'm not a bear hunter, preferring Moose, Caribou, Bison and Dall Sheep. ... There are so many Black Bear in Alaska that there's no closed season on hunting them - and no limit on the number harvested. The only restriction is you can't take a sow with cubs. Grizzly hunting permit is by a lottery drawing in most of the game management units (often the size of states in the lower 48, as Alaska has more than twice the area of Texas). A non-resident needs a registered guide to hunt Grizzly, but a non-resident can take Black Bear without a guide.

I've been watching Brooke and Dave for along time. Brooke taught me how to buy land and what to look for. So I bought 5 acres in northern Wisconsin because I don't like camp ground. Now I am in the process of buying a van. I just want to Thank you Brooke.
The company that goes back to old school vehicles would have no problem getting customers. No touchy easily broken computers, shade tree repairs, durable, etc., a family friend who was a mechanic complained constantly about the changes in cars that made then more fragile, harder and more expensive to repair. Loved my time in Alaska. The flip side of all that summer light is the winter darkness, but that's good too. Ice skating at night with the brilliant aurora borealis adorning the sky, bitter cold but special.

I was just talking with someone the other day who was driving her uncles 1969 Camaro. She asked "why don't they make cars like this anymore." I told her, because the auto manufactures don't want people driving the same car for 40 or 50 years when they can build cars that will only last 4 or 5 years, at best, and you have to buy a new one. We live in a disposable world and products are built on purpose to break quickly. Even if the car is assembled in America, most of the parts, especially the fragile electronics, are all made in China, who don't seem to have any quality control on anything they make. In addition they've made new cars require special tools that they only give to the dealerships, mechanics can't even get those tools. So you're forced to take your fragile car to a dealership. And to make sure you can't fix it yourself, here in Commiefornia it's "illegal" to work on your own car in your yard. Shade tree mechanics are a thing of the past. Corporate greed has prevailed.

@@DFDuck55 You're right. A relative was the kind of mechanic that could fix anything, people all around would come to him if they needed help with any vehicle, lawn mower, etc. Tough old Vietnam vet, self-reliant and knew tricks of repair next to no one else knew. When I was growing up engines were getting so squished his big hands had trouble getting to places for simple repairs. He said too many things that were once easy fixes requires practically tearing an engine apart to reach. When I was old enough, being female, my hands could get to some of the places. I learned a lot listening to him, helping where ever I could. All of that is getting lost now, we have a sea of over aged babies who can't get off the phone and barely know how to wipe their rears. They're probably waiting for a high tech toilet to do it for them. I'm a firm believer every nation's basic manufacturing and food production should home based. However, it's so bad now just saying that could get this comment removed as many of mine have been.

What a pure JOY! This is so me. Van camping, kayak fishing, cooking out. YES! My son has an inflatable and he loves it. I have an Old Town Sportsman 106 kayak. Be Well, Be Safe, Be Gloriously Happy!
Hello from Oklahoma! Great video! Being an old mechanic, 42 years, I covet the "Iron Blueberry"! They don't make them like that anymore. That van sits on a truck frame. A much better platform than the unibody construction used today. Also, the V8 engine with the truck drive train rear wheel drive, will last and can be maintained. I'm sorry your inflatable mattress wouldn't stay inflated. Maybe you shoulda used the floor insert from you inflatable kayak. Just an idea. Years ago I had an old forestry suburban. I slept in that thing while on hunting and fishing trips many times. I used a Thermarest, These days they call the model I have a Mondoking 3D. Back when I got mine it was just the extra large pad. Anyway I'm rambling, Thanks for all you Do! This old man loves watching your crazy adventures. Love The Yukon! Thanks for all you Do! God Bless!
Wow that's one gorgeous lake man , and with that backdrop of that large deep green pine covered hill ; equally gorgeous. Brook, this just might be your best video yet. Love the humor. 👍👍 I have a 2008 Dodge wheelchair conversion van. With the lowered floor, and removed middle-row seats, there is quite a bit of room inside. I removed half of the 3rd row seat and crafted a crude - but functional - bed behind the driver seat. That gives me a place to sleep while still allowing space to get my chair in. Next I attached an 8'x10' tarp to the roof (using rare-earth magnets) and out over the ramp side to provide shade & rain protection, for cooking and relaxing. Just completed my first 10-day outing and am very pleased with the results. I love it when a plan comes together.
