Fun project! Hope you enjoy my redneck smudge pot diy pool heater!! It definitely keeps the pool water alot warmer than it would be without it, thats a win!
I feel adding a wrap or something around the coils to keep the wind/outside air from hitting the coils will help alot.. But regardless, the pool is never cool anymore, love it!! Is almost a hot tub if you want it to be!!

    Once you get it choochin good, the soot all but disappears. Heat comes up and draw starts and draw adds lots of oxygen. More oxygen gives cleaner burn. Most times if you see the flame there is no smoke.

    Brilliant, we have the exact same pool. I'm gonna hook up an old air source heat pump and we also have a copper coils inside an old tank. Not sure whether to use wood or make an oil burner to put inside it.

    One thing I changed last year, was to T into the pools pump system, and use it instead of the second pump setup. I finally had issues with the secondary one due to picking up too much junk in the pool.

  • @JohnVHLife

    @JohnVHLife

    That would help for sure! We put a tarp over the top thats black now, but nothing on the sides, how would I insulate that? Either way, I can get the pool pretty hot if I run the pot 24/7

    This would be way quicker if you put the coil inside the top of the smudge pot directly in the flame. Pretty cool idea though.

    Great video! We have a burn barrel setup and hate cold water too lol. Was wondering if you could tell me how much fuel you use in a 24 hour period. The kind of fuel or oil you use and the ratio. Also, did you build your smudge pot and do you recommend a resource to watch for the build thanks for your time!

    I mainly run used motor oil only. 5 gallons lasts 8hrs or so, depends on your carb setting on the smudge pot. These are antique orchard heaters, you can buy them for about $120.. Search your local craigslist for smudge pot orchard heater

    Do Not put the COIL inside the chimney pipe, cold coil and the heat create condensation on the coil that drips into the hot oil , which can create a explosion situation, use on the outside only. Remember hot oil and water explode , use extreme caution

    So why is the copper coil outside the stack? Seems it would have been fine coiled a little tighter and slipped inside or was it a problem cutting a hole or slit in the stack? Is there some reason the heat is set up so far away from the pool? Smell or are the pool chemicals flammable in which case light the pool on fire and add water until it goes out (kidding of course.) Ohhhh, hey fire place boat float! Metal bottom fireplace on floats.

  • @JohnVHLife

    a couple of suggestions: as the warm water in the coiled copper would naturally want to rise - make sure you are introducing the cool pool water at the bottom of the coil also wrap some fiberglass insulation around the outside of the coil & stack - you're loosing heat without it

    You are loosing 80% of the heat, the pipe should be less than 1/2 inch and in the flame, plus you need at least 150 kW of energy to get to 90f
