Redline One-Year Review: 2010 Volkswagen GTI 6-speed

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Help us grow so we can bring you more videos! Like us on Facebook @ / 2redline For years, Volkswagen's GTI seemed to sit on an un-touchable perch atop most of its direct rivals. Although it lacked the raw power figures for bragging rights, no other competitor could touch the VW for its unbeatable combination of sporty performance and everyday livability. With strong entries from Ford, Honda, Subaru, and Mazda does the GTI still have what it takes to be considered a class leader? Let's find out...

@@felixg.cortez248 my 08 gti has 180000 and it has problems with the passenger airbag sensor and the front dipped light. Tbh I don’t recommend getting one. You’re gonna waste more on repairs than the car is worth. The car runs nice and all, but nor worth a dime tbh.

@@felixg.cortez248 My GTI only has 80k miles. Everyone says that once the TSI engine goes over 100k problems start happening. I don't know. I haven't had problems yet. The turbo-charged TSI engine simply wears out fast according to Scotty Kilmer. But, prior to 100k, its a fun car to drive. I drive my car hard because it's fun. If I buy another car, it will be a Toyota, Honda, or Mazda. If your heart is set on a GTI, do not get an automatic transmission (DSG.) Get a manual transmission.

Unless you are buying an Accord V6, we find the GTI to be much more fun to drive. The GTI also handles better and offers the hatchback utility. The accord will obviously be more reliable by reputation but it may not be as fun and it's a more common car. Go with the one that puts a bigger grin on your face ;)

I had a Mk 1 ('84) GTI in 1986 and, while it was a fun car, there were quite a few issues. A previous owner had replaced the rear windshield and the replacement was installed crooked (I didn't catch it until I brought the car home but the dealer did fix it at no cost). There was an exhaust leak that made it sound extremely loud (later fixed). A bad motor mount turned the entire car into a vibrator (also fixed). The worst problem was the temperature gauge which persistently registered nearly all the way to the high side (no fix for that one). My current VW is a Golf R (Mk 7) which only has some of those electronic glitches (intermittently failing backup camera, occasional blackouts of the entertainment screen). Sometimes an automatic up/down window switch fails to work automatically. And I did have to replace the clutch after adding APR Stage 2 which has brought a whole new meaning to the term "hot hatch." I've had the R for nearly 5 1/2 years and plan to keep it for many years to come.

With our 99 Jetta Wolfsburg, we've had electrical issues like crazy. Window motors go left and right. Bulbs go constantly. The battery dies every few months similar to what you said about the GTI. The coolant light blinks until you start driving and the engine warms up, yet there's plenty of coolant in the car. But all these things come with the VW love I guess. I love our Jetta, and with 166k miles, it still started RIGHT (after being jumped, of course) and ran like a champ, I love my Jetta.

This is a great review of a used GTi. I'm one of those who wondered about reliability issues with the brand, so thanks for that too. I may be too old for an F-ST...but too young for a GTi? 63 and still shifting, and grinning from ear to ear!

I’ve owned a 2008 Passat for a while now and I can confirm that the light bulb warning light comes on all the time. Basically the car can’t tell the lights are functioning until you turn them on for a second or two. Im happy this car comes with the tsi and not the tfsi. The tfsi in my Passat has almost 200,000 miles on it and is feeling the pain but is working perfectly fine except for a small head gasket leak. The tsi engine replaced the tfsi in the Passat late 2008 year models because of reliability issues and a shift of use for the most part. Both engines suffer from different issues but the tsi tends to have a little bigger but less common issues compared the the tfsi which would eat it’s own cam follower just because it could. In comparison the gti should be faster than my current car because it either has a dsg or a manual that connects to a lsd with added launch control. If you get one just know white smoke means drive home and black smoke means pull over immediately and reach for the fire extinguisher or in rare cases you almost turned your tsi into a tdi with some oil and a spark.

Honestly, both are fun in their own ways. I like the ILX more for it's comfortable ride, superb seats, push-button start, and quieter interior. I also think the 2.4L engine gets the Acura up to speed a tad quicker than the GTI and I like the shifter much more in the ILX. The GTI has more low-end grunt but it doesn't pull as hard as the ILX at high speeds and the engine is too quiet sometimes. GTI handles curves better but sometimes the ride is a tad too firm on long-trips.

The quality of my GTI is on par with audi and really makes other cars feel cheaply made.... At the crank it has about 234 according to calculations. All in all solid car handles amazingly well which has saved me a few times. Not necessarily, some buyers may not like the Mk7 or prefer not to buy the first model year of a new generation. Also, the price of the new one will be much higher and you won't get the special financing VW is offering on the remaning 2013 models. The Mk6 generation is still a great car, but we are excited for the new one as well.

Rick Danner before you buy get a comprehensive inspection of the car and its history. Make sure it's a one owner vehicle and wasn't flogged (driven idiotically). When something eventually goes wrong (e.g. needing new turbo) it will cost you big, these cars require higher maintenance than others and regular oil changes. It's not too bad though at all!!! Nothing compared to BMW, Merc or older cars. It's pretty easy to keep it running, these engines are bullet proof, believe me, but just know you will need to be putting money into this car... So if you can JUST afford it, walk away it'll be a huge mistake you'll regret. If you have enough cash to throw at it, get one, they are amazing, the engine is ridiculously smooth. Just don't miss the services. :)

keep in mind, a simple engine tune will release 20% of more horses, volkswagen de-tunes their cars from the factory so they dont compete with audis this little bastard can easily hit 250hp or more with only a tune, nothing else

This does seem like a great car. But I would not be able to excuse it for the electrical glitches. I'm one of those people that if the car says somethings wrong, then I have to take it to the shop (I own a 97 Accord)! I would just hate for different lights and warnings to be flashing and continue to drive and ignore them.

I remember using that infotainment system in a Volkswagen Phaeton. It's horribly slow, especially on the navigation. Even in 2007 you could get faster phones.

Perfect little college kid car. Pretty fun, but not as reliable as it should be. The water pump is absolute crap. So is the stock clutch. Fuel pump also kinda iffy. They replaced my water pump twice within 4 months of getting it, and I have a suspicion it's slightly leaking again. But even with those problems, it's still pretty close to perfect as a commuter

Ya vw halfassed on the water pump deal. I'd go for the Focus ST or a wrx. As a college kid....I say ford bronco all the way. Bullet proof truck, go anywhere and do anything and if you take out the back seat you can get lucky anywhere after doing anything too. lol. Only down side is gas, which really isn't that bad if kept on the highway.

KutWrite Of course not. Stopped making them in 96. The Expedition replaced it and is less capable offroad. Broncos are good everywhere.

Struggling to agree with the comment that the golf is an easy car to get out of - it’s rather squat and low and does take a bit of an effort, especially if you’re older
