yeah as a kid playing pokemon I was avoiding trainers and staying out of tall grass unless I wanted to level up or catch something. They even have repel items to make it so you don't have to fight zubats in caves constantly. Gym fights are the only part where combat gets more fun because they are intended to be the most challenging part and they're the most rewarding. The rest of the time combat is used as fodder or obstacles and never for its own sake. I think turn-based still has a place in modern design, darkest dungeon did great and deck builders are huge right now. But gotta recognize how the old RPGs structured the game around their combat to allow the player to prepare and engage with it on their own terms. And yeah if you want to market to adults the combat needs to be more than rock paper scissors.

Sounds cool! I think Supes as a way of doing RPG mechanics in a modern setting is totally under-explored. Tried to make a sort of Worms/Angry Birds flick-em-up with that theme a while ago but didn't have the tech knowhow at the time.

A Unique Selling Proposition is more of an action, a selling point is more a feature i guess Let me make an example, if i have a good combat system that's my selling point, if my combat system makes you feel more powerful compared to similar games that's a unique selling proposition that makes you stand out from competition Usually a selling point is something not unique by definition, as it represents something that's desirable in the first place and we should recognize the selling points in other games pretty easily A unique selling proposition is harder to frame exactly, can be a mix of selling points or just a big twist mechanics on top

@@MarioCola this is an excellent distinction to make! I’ll probably keep using Point in the same way because it’s standard business language, but the distinction you make here is really helpful for people who want to think more closely about the distinction between analysing a pre-existing thing or ideating and assessing new ideas.

Fantastic advice. I could see how some devs might feel that submitting their game to you is just asking for the big hurt (these games are their babies after all), but I think that's what is needed. That's why they're submitting, right? Fluffing someone's ego isn't going to help them make a great game.

@@khanstruct77 yeah; I do try to emphasise that the issues are common things we see a lot of. And I think when a game has nothing positive to show or talk about I’ll generally not end up doing a video on it. There’s not much point in giving out design advice in, for example, cases where the person is clearly still learning basic development and won’t be able to implement any of the changes I suggest. I think this is an example of a case where the developer does have what it takes in terms of tech and visual stuff, and just needs to think more about the game design - so exactly who this channel is for.

Doc, Pokemon IS bad and has things wrong with it. SO MANY THINGS. Gyms don't make sense is my biggest one, and they just aren't fun. "This is the best guy in town. Every 9 year old who rolls through with a bug in his pocket takes him to the fucking cleaners on the regular. BEST IN TOWN." How about, instead of typed gyms, themed gyms? That way, you'd need to work out an actual team to fight a gym leader instead of just having one with a move that hammers their whole group. Like, construction gym, business gym, beach gym, explorer gym, tailor gym. I'm just dropping professions and places people go. Beach gym probably sounds like a bunch of water types, but there would be plenty of flying and bug types in there, and grass types and rock types. All kinds of shit.

@@RandyBurgertime again I think it all comes down to target audience: grinding games with low skill ceilings and minimal punishment for “bad” choices work well for children and that’s why there are so many on Roblox. But are children a viable target audience for *any* small time indie game selling premium on Steam? I don’t think so.

Oh yeah; the first time I mentioned it, it was a reach for comedic effect. The second time it’s more about identifying the depth required in a turn based combat system which appeals to adults and does well in 2024.
