Red Wiggler Cocoon Nursery Update + 6000 Worm Tower Feeding | Vermicompost Worm Farm

How do I get all the compost worms out of the castings? With a cocoon nursery!!! Check out this update & learn how I manage my VermiHut Worm Tower with a huge feeding for these 6000 red wiggler & blue compost worms as they turn my food scraps & cardboard shreddings into natural organic fertilizer & soil amendments in the form of worm castings for my garden!
In this video I'll teach you how to guarantee your bin gets a worm ball as well as update the honeycombed bedding & cardboard tubes we put in & I add a little bit of unique bedding to the top feeding tray on its 59th day being the active feeding tray.
Epigeic worms or composting worms are fascinating natural composters & fertilizers that are in most homesteaders bag of tricks to make free organic fertilizer & soil amendments as well as fishing bait. If you've ever thought about vermicomposting or composting with worms to make organic fertilizer & natural soil amendments with your plant based kitchen scraps or food waste, this is the channel for you. I have 3 worm composing bins which you can watch from start to finished worm castings on the 3 playlists following each worm bin. If you haven't started yet, get started now and vermicompost with me!🪱🪱🪱 Visit my Channel at / vermicompostlearnbydoing

    Great tip about the chopstick for finding the hatched babies, Patrick. I use an 8" bamboo skewer to pick worms off floors, etc., so I'll expand its scope to finding worms in castings now too. Btw, garlic is antimicrobial (not as much as ginger though), which is probably why it takes longer to disappear. Also, I think you used the word "mushy" at least 6 times! I like it! All the best in 2023, Patrick. ~ Sandra

    another great video! I have two bins of worms. one is red wigglers and the other is my original earth worms. I'm upgrading to a bath tub vermicompost bin. can I combine the red wigglers and earth worms in my new bin? if not, then I'm thinking I might just release the earth worms in to my garden and concentrate on the red wigglers. ty

  • @Vermicompost

    @Vermicompost

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much for the kind words!! I think you can add both sets of worms to the new bath tub worm bin if you want...especially if they are both epigeic (compost) earthworms. If the earthworms were originally from your garden they were most likely not compost worms, but will still eat food scraps, they just aren't as social or prolific composters as epigeic earthworms. If you got them from a compost pile or within a pile of leaves, then there is a good chance they are composting worms. And of course if you got them from a source you know is compost worms then a mix is a great option for the new bin. I run a red wiggler and blue worm mix in my VermiHut and Urban Worm Bag and both species are doing well and making lots of vermicompost for me!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    What would you recommend as far as the maximum amount of red wigglers in a standard Rubbermaid tote. I would say it's about 2 ft wide by 3 ft long by a foot and a half tall with 8 to 10 in of bedding material? As of right now there's probably roughly 2000 in each tote. I have three other separate totes with roughly 2000 wigglers in each. A part of me feels like I should add a fourth tote and disperses equally among the four totes in total? Please excuse if my question is confusing. After my brain injury alot of times it's hard for me to relay my thoughts and questions without being long-winded. Thanks

  • @Vermicompost

    @Vermicompost

    4 ай бұрын

    Not confusing at all!! I have a very small tote, about a mens large shoe box size and it has 1,000 worms in it: kzread.info/head/PLimznaPXKV09y9X94Q4aNpNzwUoLoVXug I start most of my bins with 2,000 worms and then let them reach their carrying capacity. With the size bins you have, that could be well over 4,000-5,000 worms!! Compost worms never outgrow their bins because they will slow down reproduction to fit the size bin they are in. But if you want to keep expanding your population then it is a great idea to split the populations when they get to 4,000+ I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Purely for the enjoyment of seeing them all bunched together!! Compost worms are the only earthworms that behave like that! If you don't see any worm balls, it doesn't mean anything other than you didn't catch them discovering the food all at once. Overfeeding is a major problem for new (and old) worm farmers, so there is a fine line between a worm ball and a fermenting worm bin!! I did!!! I got an Urban Worm Bag! I'm gonna do an unboxing video & set up video some time next month...The executive producer says it has to be an outside bin so I've got to come with how I want to utilize it & how many worms to start with!!
