I will say the “reason they hate eachother” is much more explored in depth in the books Alex dislikes Henry because he was a dick to him when they first met and also because he’s tired of being constantly compared to Henry and having to try harder than him. Henry never really dislikes Alex. He actually is attracted to him from their first meeting but was rude to him because he was still grieving his father. Then Alex was hostile to him from there on out and Henry just matched his energy because it was easier than admitting he had a crush on him.

On a more serious note, this movie is great representation for the lgbtq+ community. It doesn’t rely on stereotypes or hate. OH, ALEX. For gay men relationships, this is idyllic. It's usually dancing the devil's tango first while they're enemies and blocked on Grindr, then they become friends, then in 3 days either one of them ghosts the other, or if it's meant to be, they move in with each other. Oh, and talk is like, at the bare minimum. Source: me, a gay man

There are principles and standards personally I will not associate with apps or people who do not align with such. For instance if you’re going to Grindr by implication we know what that app is for then how can one expect a relationship to develop from there not to say it won’t but one of the parties got that app for a different reason other than finding a significant other. It takes a unique approach to find someone and some gay movies are not idealistic some of us we have a share of our fairytales, sure it took time to find him but it was worth the wait. Story short, you can only find him if his aligned with the right things and if his moral compass is better than the rest. So I have a different view of gay relationships. Hope one day you will share the same.

The movie really should've been a mini-series because there's a lot in the book about the boys and their relationship. Like the emails , that goes on for MONTHS in the books and they do bring up many historically gay figures as well as very important insecurities for both boys. There's also Henry's depression, his father's death, and his familial situation. There's Alex's internalized homophobia, his career and life aspirations, and what his relationship means for his mom's campaign. The flirting was also much more genuine and actually funny.

While I love the movie, it would've been better as a 8 episode series. Like the tension and hatred towards each other could've been explored with more backstory. The Vacation getaway sequence could've been a whole episode. The breaking ties bit could've been a whole episode before the finale. A lot of things could've been more explored more and paced better if this was a series than a 2 hour movie.

14:31 this is actually a HUGE part of the book. the emails henry & alex send each other are SO SO important because they talk about queer historical figures & how they are erased and henry's depression & grief. have read the book 4 times and it is seriously one of the most beautifully written romcoms ever. the book also goes over alex's anxiety (& probably undiagnosed adhd) & his need for perfection & work to just make sense of things. i think the movie works well as an independent movie but really poorly as an adaptation. but that's what happens when you want to adapt a mostly epistolary novel.

@@Murder.Of.Crows. In the book tho, it goes a bit deeper into how his childhood was and how much of their (his and his sisters) lives where dragged into politics. Their parents also divorced and his dad moved away. They're also from Texas, which was a red state the first time his mom won the election, so she lost in her home state. Alex also didn't have a lot of people looking like him growing up in the politics world and he works really hard to become someone people like him can look up to when they grow up. In the book he's studying government, not law. He works (overworks) super hard on everything he does, has a lot of anxiety and basically lives on coffee. And it's also so much better described in the book about why Alex hates Henry so much. He went up to introduce himself and thinks Henry looks at him like he's the most offensive thing before he tells his equerry to get rid of him. And it hurt him not because he needed Henry's help since he was new to the whole public thing (like in the movie), but it's becuase he's the son of the first female president, he's not white like she is and people will always come down harder on him and Henry is a reminder of how easy it would be if he was white. He's basically jealous about how much easier Henry has it (because he's white) than he does. It's also a little bit about how he kinda had a crush on Henry when he was younger, and their first meeting doesn't go very well, so he develops some kind of hatred for Henry instead. The movie kinda glosses over their mental health problems and the race struggles, which makes up a lot of who their charecters are.

14:26 okay but for real, in the book they go over this and I think it’s kind of sad that they don’t include it in the movie. They actually send a lot of emails back and forth talking about gay history and how they’re always written off as “good friends” and the author actually pulled quotes from these historical figures that really read as love letters rather than correspondence between friends. As an EMT, I can confirm that the whole, "I love you but life with you sucks" thing is a huge part of why like 90% of first-responder relationships end in break-up or divorce. They're literally some of the best people in the world, but their work schedule is in constant flux and impossible to plan around, and when they are off work they're constantly sleep deprived and can only actually be there with you mentally like 10% of the time. Couple that with burnout and the vast majority of relationships will fall apart.

Like, yes, it's corny and idealised and your typical romcom, but it's also very funny, got good characters, great chemistry and boy did I not expect that polo scene to get that heated that fast, the cutting of the scene is just perfection. Also the combination of British cockiness and American charm is just chefs kiss. This movie was basically made for me, ticks all my boxes

The museum is the very famous V&A Museum (named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert) and in the books it goes into details all the statues they look at and a lot of them were like a gay-awakening for Henry or are depicting gay lovers, etc. so that’s why it’s special to him. It’s a HUGE museum and completely free to visit (as most museums in London are).

@@Thom35UO of course, but that's my point. Not every movie about a gay couple has to be completely attached to reality, that's why it's a movie/novel, it's not real. It gives the public something to watch relaxed and without having to worry about the real life problems, and there's plenty other media that shows the real side, so. What I mean to say it's that the community deserves to have media that they could watch just for fun and to even fantasize, it's not a bad thing as long as you can understand the difference between fiction and reality. 😄

I read the book a while back so my memory is not very fresh. Still, they rushed and omitted a couple things because the book has other subplots that it explores extensively throughout the story, especially regarding the elections. The elections and how to win over Texas are a big part of the story that puts a lot of pressure on Alex and helps the reader know more about Alex, his life, and his relationship. However, a lot of that pressure and moments were cut short in favor of increasing the focus on Alex and Henry's relationship because if they actually went deeper into this there wouldn't be enough time so its understandable. Thats why it should've been a series.

@@bruceweatherly6559 the thing about it, is that the hate is kinda one sided, even in the book, and it is really just because Henry was rude the first time they met, and maybe a little bit of the comparison thing between them, which is what they focused on more in the movie. The point is that they never really had a real reason to hate each other, and that Alex was kinda sorta repressing his attraction to Henry by hating him (bc also in the book, Alex doesn't really know that he's bi, so it´s a whole other self discover journey thing), and Henry was just reflecting Alex's behavior. I guess it was a bit too much to include in just one movie? It didn't really bother me bc i read the book, and in my head it was just natural that they hated each other 😭
