Red-tailed Hawk Attacks Great Horned Owl At Nest, Reveals Hatchling Owlet | Cam 3 - Feb. 19, 2022

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In a wild turn of events on the Savannah Owl cam, a Red-tailed Hawk attacks the female and pulls her off the nest bowl. Thankfully, the female recovers quickly and seems unharmed. The female's short trip off the nest revealed that her owlet has finished hatching sometime in the early morning hours of February 19!
Red-tailed Hawk attacks at Great Horned Owl nests have been documented before, although catching them on cam is rare. Adult Great Horned Owls have no common predators, but unattended eggs and nestlings may fall prey to foxes, coyotes, raccoons, lynx, raptors, crows, and ravens. Interactions such as these more likely have to do with territorial disputes than the hawks being interested in a meal.

During the Fall of 2014, a pair of Great Horned Owls began frequenting an abandoned Bald Eagle nest adjacent to a protected, nutrient-rich salt marsh along the Georgia coast. This nest sat nearly 80′ above one of the six Audubon International Certified golf courses at The Landings, on Skidaway Island, near Savannah, Georgia. Over the course of 2015 and 2016, a pair of owls successfully fledged four owlets from the site, but they did not return to breed in 2017.
Instead, a pair of Ospreys began renovating the nest and committed to breeding at the same site from 2017 to 2019, when the dead tree that held the nest was removed due to being designated as a falling hazard. A new nest site was erected in an adjacent tree in the fall of 2019, and the Ospreys were quick to take up residence in 2020 and 2021.
In January 2022, a pair of Great Horned Owls returned to the cam site to nest for the first time since 2016.
Great Horned Owls are fierce predators that hunt a diverse assortment of prey. They are generally nocturnal hunters, but will also hunt in broad daylight. Throughout the nesting period, the owls may arrive at the nest site with meals of small- to medium-sized mammals, reptiles, fish, and birds of all sizes.
Female Great Horned Owls spend most of the time at the nest caring for eggs and owlets while males hunt for food. After fledging, young may remain with their parents for 3-4 months before dispersing from natal territories.

It is interesting to see this happen because the GHO seems like the ultimate predator-generally at night for many animals. I was first introduced to the GHO because of their attacks on the Bald Eagle nest of Harriet and M15. I hope she’s unharmed and can have some peace, she looked startled. I think you can hear the call of the Hawk after the attack.

I thought some comments on here were a little mean (because we love a mom & baby) but I did a bunch of reading and GHOs account for about 30% of red-tailed hawk chick deaths. I hadn't realized how much competition there was between the two birds in general, though it makes sense. I've been watching the nest cam for RTHs Big Red & Arthur on this channel for about 5 years and I love them too. Nature can be harsh but that's how it is. I'm so thankful to have the opportunity to watch them in a "natural" setting like this. Also glad I wasn't born a vole!

Don't get it twisted. One on one in daylight, any adult gho, male or female has plenty to fear from an attack from an angry, seasoned and formidable adult Red Tail, especially a female. Almost as powerful and much much faster, Red tails don't rely on silent feathers for a single pounce from behind at night, Red tails are true fighters and will attack, fight and kill. Adult Red tails, Goshawks, Osp, Ferruginous, Golden and Bald eagles are all on record killing adult Ghos. It goes both ways. This big Red Tail just gave thus owl an attention getting stoop and still the power from that alone damn near knocked that owl back something fierce.

Why? Very intelligent hawk. Adult Red Tails are nothing to mess around with either and certainly are capable of harming the owl.

The stupid remark was aimed at the act, not intellect, the reason being the GHO's mate was surely perched nearby & could of gone after the hawk. My choice of words could of been better.

Nice to see paybacks... the owls in the Florida area moved into the territory of Bald Eagles Harriet and M15 and have been annoying them for awhile mainly getting M15 at night. They even have the nerve to attack the Eagles even though they are using the secondary nest of those Eagles....No gratitude at all. lol

Wow talk about with one eye open , mama owl was on him like lightening no way he was getting any of he babies ,what a great mother not like some of the all day pajama and slipper wearing ones I see around these days driving or walking to the drops or school even collecting the kids from school dressed like that ,,ahh come on FFS do they then sleep in those same PJ'S as well after making the dinner and washing the clothes an house in them or do they have in door and out door PJ's ,maybe it's me I'm 46 now maybe I just don't get the trend the young kids have these days ,maybe their the new trend setters like the beetles did with their hair cuts I'm the 50s ,these mainly young women not changing their clothes they slept in and taking the kids im to and from school whilst popping in doing a bit of shopping in aldi with the oul winnie the poo slippers on ,their just being new age rebels and I bet their personnel hygiene is emmuculate its just the clothes style sorry pajamas style I mean il have to stop getting it wrong , but we live in a world now where the old saying "Bob's your uncle and Fanny's your aunt" can actually be "bobs your uncle and Fanny's your uncle now last year she was your auny" or "bobs your aunt and Fanny's non binary so today's she your aunt ,be make sure ask her next time you see her because she might be your uncle that day "...were all F%@ked
