Somehow, I've never seen that "Wasteland" prototype clip before. Very interesting. I like how, not only was this concept a twinkle in Greg's eye as early as the year 2006, but also that they very awkwardly cropped out the woman sitting beside Andy when it was his turn to speak.
Cant think of RedEye memories without including Patti Ann Browne. She was GREAT!
Gutfeld comes from that brand of comedy that thinks its comedy because its snotty privileged guys making fun of everybody. You can always tell now who the wannabes are: they're the guys who never ever laugh at themselves. A contrast: Jim Norton. He's on the show sometimes just like when he was on Opie & Anthony. Jim Norton is universally funny no matter what side of the aisle you're on. But guess why? Because he can laugh at himself. Gutfeld can't. Neither can Anthony, which is why he eventually got weeded out. Gutfeld doesn't do *actual* comedy... he's only on Fox. Gee, i wonder why. Because no actual comedian or entity that promotes comedy thinks he's good. Meanwhile someone like Jim Norton shows up sometimes because it's a gig.

This is a strange observation that assumes Gutfeld and Anthony never involved themselves in self deprecation or simply laughing at themselves. Anthony would constantly eat the humiliation when one of his jokes bombed and laugh at his fumble. Gutfeld, especially early on, was obviously nervous and uncomfortable being on camera and made fun of himself often. It doesn't show much when Bill is in the group as Bill fills the role of the bumbling sidekick. Look at Greg after they air the video of the progenitor to Red Eye, he immediately goes into self deprecation calling himself fat. The idea of Greg being a "snotty privileged guy" has no basis in fact when he's been on the lower end of the Fox News hierarchy for decades and never moved into anything bigger than a spot on The Five. They're always making it clear that when one of the "real" Fox News hosts appears on Red Eye it's a huge step down for that person, because Greg and the crew aren't part of that circle and never will be.
