Red Dot or Laser?

In this video Chris discusses the difference between Red Dots and Lasers on a handgun. Do having either one of these MAKE you a better shooter? Is one better than the other? Being closer to 70 years of age than 65, my eyes are going bad to the degree that I can barely see fixed sights anymore. The red dot can still be seen so that I can shoot fist sized groups at 20 yards. However... When I am in bed at night will I have time to don my glasses, turn on the lamp and identify someone who has invaded my home? Probably not. This is where my streamlight tlr 8 with green lazer shines. Grab the gun, hit the light (hopefully blinding the invader) and green dot lazer is fully visable even with my poor vision. As I live alone and I can count on two fingers the people who have a key to my house (and they KNOW I keep a gun close by) anyone else will be in a world of hurt. Different tool for different tasks.

Bingo. I’m new to the handgun world and still learning! Just bought myself a new Glock 19 Gen 5 and put on a TRL 8 AG and Glock Night Sights. You’re exactly right about throwing it up in your house! With the Laser and Light both on you can land that laser on in a second no trouble whatsoever! 👍

For close quarters combat with a handgun, especially in low light (think nighttime home defense), I'm taking the laser. It allows you to hit your target without having to line up your sights at all, and gives you the ability to hit from odd angles. If you buy a decent light/laser, it will hold zero well enough for combat inside 20 yards. I prefer a parallel zero because on most pistols, the difference between bore and laser is only about 2 inches. 2 inches isn't going to make a difference when you're aiming center mass with a handgun at realistic distances. Bullet drop won't be a factor. If you're shooting at something far enough away that you need to worry about bullet drop, you'll probably have time to use your iron sights. For just about every other situation I think the red dot is more practical. That, or just use iron sights.

Thanks for the comments. I'm tending to a laser myself. It seems a bunch of range guys are getting Red Dots from manufacturers, and posting to YT. Should I ever need to stop someone from entering my home I'll not be going into some combat stance in the dark.

The laser is best for close or mid (30 yards or less) self defense. The red dot itself I find to be best for precision shooting, which you will likely not be doing under stress in a death/life situation. The laser is also useful if you find your self on a weird position. One handed, on the ground, perhaps injured. The laser gives the operator a huge advantage. That said, as you stated. It is important to practice often with the iron sights in order to maintain fundamentals. What I do? I shoot about 2 mags with the laser at the range from 7 yards out, to make sure my laser is zeroed correctly. The rest, 10-20 mags I shoot using my iron sights. I recommend a TRL8 A for Glock 19s and compact guns. Don’t really completely rely on the laser, but it is good to have it. Just in case.

I use both and zero both at 10 yards. Most self defense situations with pistols are within and around that range now my larger guns are zeroed further

Just as a laser can be knocked off zero, so can a red dot. Most people using lasers are shooting at a distance of 10-15 yards. Bullets do not drop in that range.

I have a laser dot on a Smith Bodygaurd only because it came that way. I don't have any red dots. Not of my firearms are optic ready. I'm curious about them but don't see when I would ever use them in a typical self defense situation. Sadly, I've been in that situation multiple times having been the target of armed robberies. Things evolve quickly and violently. Tunnel vision with any sight can happen which is bad when there are multiple assailants. Probably good for cops on duty,

Sure would be nice if a person could go fire the set up they think they want, to see if it's what they really want. An indoor handgun range with pistols to rent and 'test drive'. I never made the leap from pinball to video games, so you could probably guess how many red dots I have. lol

The same rules apply for zeroing a dot and a laser; one is just mounted above the bore, and the other is mounted below it. Although, the laser might be a bit farther away from the bore than the dot, depending on your setup. The question is, why not have both a dot on top AND a light/laser combo on the bottom? That's what I've been doing for years, and it works great. Red dot and green laser both sighted in at 25 yards.

A red dot sight runs on the same philosophy. A red dot sight is above the bore and needs to be zeroed for it be accurate AT a certain distance. I use a Holosun SCS that is made to direct fit to the slide without a plate which by design makes it a little more accurate as it co-witnesses the stock sights. I also own a Laser Max internal laser recoil guide rod replacement on another pistol and its just as accurate as my red dot...Please do your research before doing a video...There are good accurate lasers to be bought if you know what your looking for...Acquisition of my internal laser is way faster than finding a red dot sight also and range with a laser is WAY farther than a red dot sight as the dot grows larger the farther down range you try to use it on the red dot sight...Really your points are MOOT as a red dot sight and laser both need to be compensated for when shooting longer or shorter distances. One is not better than the other they both have their pros and cons...

At a distance a red dot is better because you won't see a laser dot without a scope. Up close like in a house a laser /can/ be better because you can target from the hip if need be, in which case a red dot is worthless.

Lets say that you get knocked down or fall and being in an awkward position that you can raise your pistol up to see your sights, with the laser all you would have to do is turn it on and put the laser dot on the threat and pull the trigger. I don't use my laser as a crutch I use them as a backup if I can't see my sights.

There is no simple answer because bullet weight, bullet speed, bullet shape, how much gun powder is used (aka: mag load, +p, +p+, etc), barrel length all come into play of bullet drop...Simple answer is there is no simple answer...There is NO such thing as a average bullet drop between 20 and 30 feet. There are bullet drop compensation charts for rifle scopes but you need to input the bullet company name, caliber, and bullet weight to be able to use the BDC lines on the scope. There are no easy answers also as weather condition can throw that way off also...

There is no difference between the two types regarding zero and point of impact. Same with a rifle scope. If you are inside your zero then the bullet will be high and after zero it will be low. Same thing with a red dot I would imagine. I don’t think there is some built in compensation that allows you to infinitely remain on target.

You can do either or even with one eye. For longer distances I would prefer red dot. In you case, I would probably do both, but in different colors of course, ie red dot, green laser or vice-versa

Use a laser and sight it parallel with the pistol bore. It will be within an inch or two out to about 25 yards, maybe more. All you have to focus on is the laser dot. You can even turn the pistol sideways and be within an inch or two. It makes no difference if you hold the pistol at your belt height or over your head as long as the laser dot is on the target. Green dot lasers are more visible in daylight.

Learn to shoot well with your iron sights first. Batteries don't last forever. Both have pros and cons. One might be better for a carry gun while the other better for a house gun.

  • @Santu1939
    @Santu19396 ай бұрын

Ok.... So the red dot also just point at the same point without compensating for the bullet drop. Shit, we can say the iron sight does the same thing. That's why you zero your sights at the distance of your choosing. Also, red dots can lose zero too, it's not just a laser thing .

At close quarters there is no difference in aim alignment. Laser lights show you a certain path. in the dark any laser light will be far more useful. Just consider what it takes to activate either system. A squeeze switch on your grips is a good plan or a reliably good shake awake.

A red dot has the same issue with converging and parallel as the laser. So to recommend one or the other based upon this vid is inane.

not very informing. They both have a purpose and when used properly. In a quick need you do not have time to focus and line up you sights. Thats way a lasers are great for self defense. Just point and shoot.
