Red Dot Forum Camera Talk: Leica Q3

In this episode of Red Dot Forum Camera Talk, Leica experts Josh Lehrer and David Farkas are talking about the recently-introduced Leica Q3. Now in its third generation, the latest Leica Q3 builds on the already capable Q2 while offering upgraded imaging performance and numerous physical improvements. As usual, Josh has done head-to-head testing to show how the new Q3 stacks up against its predecessor, the Q2. And David took the Q3 for a test run in Paris, France where he put the new camera through its paces for a week, with plenty of real-world sample images.

After the show, I performed another test, shooting the Q3 at ISO 6400, 12500 and 25000, both L-DNG and M-DNG. If you bring an L-DNG file into Photoshop and downsize it to the same resolution as the M-DNG file set to the same ISO, it exhibits less noise and higher detail than the equivalent M-DNG. Feel free to test this yourself with my DNG files, found here: www.dropbox.com/sh/022bpxmmkpgn2p5/AAD-1-BA5ENEaE9284_r5FpYa?dl=0

On a recent trip to Japan, I could find a young japanese girl sitting for dinner and shooting with a Q from the lcd screen -probably in auto mode- and a gentleman in the first class line from Haneda to Heathrow also carrying one, like a Birkin bag. It is a luxury item, but I am sure that it will give them satisfaction too. The new Q3 is impressive. I work professionally as a documentary photographer. My first Leica was a Q1 that I still keep, use for scouting and cherish. I use two Ms (9p and 10r) paired when I need to travel light, and an S2 and one of the 300 S3s ever made when I can leave the car close by. Also use other gear, but the Leicas are 80% of what I do. In every single project, I don’t know how, there’s images from the Q. It is that good. Living between Spain and the UK I never had the chance to shop with you guys, but wanted to commend you for the wonderful content you produce. It’s informative and fun. Than you so much!

Actually for the 2 hosts. Q2 actually has back button focus, without digging into setting. You can do back button AFL and AEL separately. For BB AFL when half press take a shot and don’t lift up your finger, keep it at the half press position and you have it. A KZreadr named Samuel Lintaro demonstrated this.

As the camera is already able to focus with the button when a button is dedicated to AFL and in this case the af on the release button is already disabled means that it would be very easy via fw update to give the possibility to dedicate a button to back button focus!

I have the Q2M and now the Q3. Working in a Leica Boutique in Brussels, I had the pleasure and the joy to get mine pretty soon. This little gem makes beautiful pictures, and as you guys say, our problem is to get them fast enough to satisfy our customers. The black and white pictures I make are pretty good and I'm wondering if I will keep my Q2M that I love so much. Especially with the new features in Lightroom and the powerful denoise function which can clean images in a very effective way.

@@mrcondorazo if you are satisfied with your Q2 no need to change. If you want the new technologies then the Q3 is nice and makes very good black and white pictures. The Q2M is a very nice toy but you won’t see a lot of différences comparing to your Q2. There is a 20% more sharpness perception and the high ISO are almost 2 stop better. That’s it. If you really want to shoot in monochrom and really need to change your Q2, I would go for the Q3 or wait for the Q3M.

A couple a quibbles, for example re: the advantages of shooting in lower resolution mode (not crop modes), but hey, it’s a brand new camera and it’s impossible to do live q&a on a technical subject without ever making a mistake. Some folks in the comments section need to take a chill pill and switch off their entitled Karen mode.

We've done some fairly extensive testing of the M11 and its variable resolution output. There was no appreciable benefit with regards to image quality in dropping the resolution. And, we found that noise reduction is often more effective with finer pixels and finer noise. Based on those findings, we recommend sticking to the full resolution (L-DNG) unless you really need a greater burst depth for continuous shooting, or if you simply don't need high resolution images for your intended final use. We haven't had a chance to test out the variable resolution on the Q3 yet, so if we're missing something there, we're happy to explore further.

Guys. Do gou have any idea why the Q does not offer a zoomed in view when in crop mode? I understand Leice shooters love the framelines, but it woud make composing a shot at 50mm of 75mm a lot easier. And also you could see the expression of a subject a lot better. Does the Q3 offer a button short cut to re center the focus point? Double tapping the screen is not nice with the camera raised to your eye. Centre button of the directional buttons would be logical. Thanks! Steven

For landscape photography the Q3 stabilization might be useless since you probably will use a tripod but for street photography and some handheld night scapes or low light macro, the stabilization shines I can easily handheld at 1/30, but with an M 1/30 you gonna be careful, and if I’m trying to be careful I can do 1/10 with the Q2. It helps in low light but why the hosts feels the stabilization isn’t helpful if compare to an M11? They said stabilization doesn’t help much? I felt otherwise though.

OMG are you guys wrong ! First of all, as a Q shooter, bought one when the Q2 was already out, but I would rather have the 24 MP and better Low Light resolution than the overrated higher MPs. Now the Q was not such a gamble as you may let the people believe. Long before the Q, Fuji did this with the X100 (crop sensor 23 mm (35 FF eq,) with a F2 non detachable lens (designed for the camera) since 2010. That was a multi award winning camera in 2011. When the Q came out Fuji was already selling the 4th gen (X100 F which I bought before my Q, a great camera) and has proven it success over the passed years, so the bed was already made for Leica on this kind of system. But the worst thing David said was that switching between the 60 to 36 to 18 MP has hardly no advantage. Well it does, cause it is no crop, the pixels are "rearranged" therefor giving you a better dynamic range up to 15 steps. Tests has already shown that the 36 MP setting will give the most advantage. If you want to see the real measurements and physical explanation go to mathphotographer YT channel (Swiss guy with a lot knowledge about cameras and Leica in particular, love to discus with him, great source of info, and spoken in English) and watch the video about Q3 iso invariance. What I also would suggest that you visit your colleagues channel Leica Store Nürnberg, those guys REALLY understand what is happening inside, although in German but that is for me no problem cause I was raised bilingual Dutch/German, but maybe there is somebody in your team who understands German so you get and can spread the RIGHT info. Sorry, I had high hopes for this episode but after watching half of it, I couldn't take anymore. Another channel tip for you guys: Leica Camera USA, there is a nice episode called the For the Love of Lenses, nice wake up call from the designers.

We didn't dive into the full history but interesting tidbit about the Fuji X100. Leica launched the X1 with the same specs a year earlier. The Fuji even had the two tone chrome top plate and black grip of the Leica, with a "classic" Fuji script engraving on top. But good on Fuji for going that route. At the time, in 2010, they were experiencing declining sales and a lagging product portfolio. The X100 by all accounts saved Fuji. Leica then continued developing their APS lineup with the X2, X Vario, X113, X-U, T701, TL, TL2 and CL, prior to leveraging that experience into the first Q. So, yes, between Leica and Fuji, there was 6 years of market experience with APS-based compact cameras. But not with a full frame model that would be placed in the lineup right next to the SL and M. I believe we covered most of this history in our APS episode if you want more of a deep dive. As far as the variable resolution goes, we tested the M11 and M11M extensively to see if there were any benefit. There wasn't any perceptible difference. So, our recommendation going forward has been to use the highest resolution of L-DNG for most things and drop down to M-DNG or S-DNG if file size isn't needed, but buffer depth is. Based on this experience, and the fact that even Leica isn't promoting this feature as an image quality advantage with the Q3, we didn't feel the need to prioritize re-testing the same with the Q3. Perhaps it's better. We will have to see once we test for ourselves. And while a 24MP Q2-S would have been a nice companion to the SL2-S, it probably wouldn't have done well in the marketplace. Most people want more megapixels for an all-in-one camera. Besides satisfying those looking for ultimate resolution and performance, the added pixels allow for more aggressive cropping, which negates some of the tradeoff of a fixed 28mm lens. And the fact that Leica was able to increase resolution by 27%, and also improve low light ability by 1-2 stops over the Q2 means that both camps are happy. The extra megapixels doesn't come with an image quality sacrifice but rather an increase in overall performance.

Sorry but this is the Leica Q designed by Homer Simpson. It' is just full of garbage that makes no sense at all. - Nobody cares about 8k video. Absolutely nobody. - A high resolution sensor so you can crop more... instead of a 24mp stacked sensor that would make electronic shutter a viable option for non static scenes. And with a leaf shutter that only goes to 1/2000, a f/1.7 lens and - STILL! - no ND ... it could really use that. - The card slot door now basically wraps around the 1/4"-20 hole which is one of the most horrendous design failures I have ever seen. - And the only reason to do that is those pins for the wireless charging grip ... that could have been Arca compatible ... but isn't. - Like the threading in the shutter button could have been compatible with a cable release ... but isn't. - All the buttons are now cramped onto the side where your hand didn't have much space even on the Q2. - ... just to make space for that abomination of a tacked on screen. No, this camera was designed by morons to fill out spec sheets and sell accessories. I am extremely disappointed about what Leica has chosen to do here. And at minute 30 I stopped watching. There is so much wrong or PR-BS on that list ... it is embarrassing. An example: No, the Q3 does not have more buttons. Leica just made two more of the buttons customisable. That is software, Leica could chose to do that for the Q2 as well. That is not a feature to advertise, that is an artificial limitation on the older camera.

You can start with a design around a film canister instead of human hand. It is not classic, it is moronic and lazy (unless they sell a shitload of grips. Then it is a genius sales team :) ). And two dials to set a shutter speed? How come both my high tech Olympus, and somewhat high tech GFX are better for a full manual exposure shooting than a camera that pretends to be a manual exposure eden?

@@realniteart I honestly don't know what you are talking about but if it isn't the Q3, this might not be the right place to put it.

@@noenken Well, how do you set 1/320 on Olympus? You turn rear wheel till you get to 1/320. How do you do the same on Q3? You turn shutter speed dial to 1/250 and then thumbwheel to -1/3, something like that. I know there are ways to achieve the same differently. But even within Leica universe, between Q, M and SL cameras you have three different default ways to adjust shutter speed.

@@realniteart Don't get me wrong but I'm not really interested in comparing the Q3 to entirely different cameras here. My point is that the Leica Q3 is a bad continuation of the Leica Q series.
