Red Deer Stags Fight For Females In Rutting Season | Scotland | Wild Travel | Robert E Fuller

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Red stags are at their most magnificent during the annual rutting season, when males compete for females. Their antlers grow larger, their necks widen so that they can roar louder and their posture becomes regal and commanding. But all this effort takes its toll.

ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Red deer rut
The annual red deer rut takes place every autumn. At this time, red stags compete for females, or hinds, in loud and often dramatic stand-offs. The name of the game is to collect as many hinds as possible and prevent younger males from stealing them. The name 'harem' has been borrowed from Arabic to describe a males' herd of hinds.
Wild Scotland
This year I travelled to Ardnamurchan in the Highlands of Scotland to watch the red deer rut. I could hear the roaring of the stags ringing across the valleys from the moment I arrived.
Red stag roar
During the rut, a red stag's roar becomes louder and deeper. This is because their necks actually grow wider, a biological change that is thought to be triggered by autumn’s shortening days and makes space for their larynxes to fully open.
Red stag antlers
Stags grow new antlers every year, especially for the event. Hunters classify stags according to the number of points to their antlers. During my trip I watched an Imperial Stag, with 14 points, each gleaming with sharp white tips, and a Royal, with 12 points.
Red stag posturing
As the females come into season, testosterone surges through the males and they become visibly more aggressive and can clash antlers in dramatic duels. Their entire focus becomes about gathering hinds and guarding them. There are always competitors waiting in the wings to steal away a few females.
All this takes its toll
But the rut takes its toll on these magnificent beasts. Dominant stags get little time to eat or rest and can lose up to 30% of their body weight during this time.
Exhausted royal stag
This film follows my journey as I watch a handsome royal stag become increasingly weary as he tries to keep track of his harem and fend off numerous interlopers determined to steal away his hinds.

Great video. Took me awhile to realize that what was being pronounced as" hahreem" was the British way of pronouncing harem. In the US, the word sounds like "hairum". Usually, pronunciation isn't so different so this was amusing.

Beautiful video! Only once have I seen one of these up close. I was driving up a tiny country road at night near Loxhore in Devon October 2015 when a stag came out of the bushes on the left hand side, galloped across the road in front of the car and ran beside us for a while then disappeared into the field on the right hand side. Throughout this holiday we heard the rutting stags roaring overnight and in the mornings (sounded a little like mooing cows). Very special indeed.

Hi Robert, Thank you so much for providing all this incredible content. Your videos give me hours of enjoyment and I love the live streams as they are amazing to track the progress of the owls, stoats, kestrels, etc… in their day-to-day life. I find British wildlife incredibly fascinating and over the last year I have used trail cameras to observe and study wildlife in my local area. So far I have only found muntjac deer of the British deer species and this video was stunning. The landscapes and deer are phenomenal. Have you ever thought about creating videos on how to find nests, dens, setts etc…? I’m so excited to watch willow and ghosts chicks hatch, grow & fledge in the coming weeks. I plan to visit your gallery soon as well! Keep up the wonderful and inspirational work and have a great day! 🦊🦉🦡🐇🐿🐀🦔🦌

The stags are handsome fellows! It has to be exhausting to keep the ladies close and fight off the other suitors! Although the stags' weaponry is impressive, I imagine these bucks don't mind shedding them for a spell before they regrow even larger. Have you seen any monarch stags? Thank you for sharing your impressive footage, Robert! Your patience and stealth in tracking these animals has paid off! 👏👏😄💕

Thank you for sharing this wonderful footage of the Red Deer we enjoyed seeing it . We saw the red deer at Studly last Oct and it was such a wonderful day watching how they behaved during the rutting season . Unfortunately the week before when we were in the Scottish highlands the wind and rain were so bad it was impossible to photograph the wild deer. So thank you so much for sharing these with us all . Take care : ) T.W PS I hope you do not mind I have shared a link to this video on the one I just posted today : )

these hills need trees !! such a strange look at the deers without forests , it is a big difference to those in Carpathians - red stags surrounded by forests. But the species is the same, majestic and beautiful animal ... In the region Central Europe where i live there are big even huge stags, red deers in mountain forests ...respect

Robert, The Red Stags look like true Royalty in their natural surroundings as you filmed the rutting activities .Scotland is not a large country and their seems to be enough un- developed land to support a healthy herd of Red Stags and probably other wildlife. The population must be be small enough that human development and expansion is not eating up valuable land that they need to live on and reproduce. If true, that is great for wildlife.

This might sound dumb but I wonder why God didn't have a stag and a hine stay together and be a family like the birds stay together and have a family. I guess there aren't enough stags. What a beautiful place! I was telling my husband how fun it must be to work with wildlife and to paint and to do all the awesome things you do....we are missionaries and we work with people and it's not as easy. lol However, people are created in the image of God, whereas animals are just animals.... and when people get saved and begin to grow in the Lord going to church and reading the Bible .....and they begin to have joy and peace even through some terrible problems in life.....that is very rewarding. Thank you so much for your wonderful work. I really love it. Especially watching all that you do through the lens of believing God created it all.......it's really lovely and to see God's handiwork is just amazing.

Red deers can be either large or smaller. Stags from the mountains usualy weight around 100 to 150 kilos, being smaller not in look but their antlers are taller with less branches. The woodland and swamp stags are more huge with individuals weight 300 kilos, enormous bodies and less taller antlers but nore branches, females dont weight more than 150. Serbia is known to have best hunting places for red deer, with champions that lasted 20 years. New Zealand is also inhabited by red deer by the europeans. Their antlers are so big with huge ammout of branches
