Red Cross Volunteers Tell the Truth About What It's Like To Volunteer

The Red Cross relies on volunteers before, during and after emergencies. Meet three Red Cross volunteers who illustrate the variety of ways people like you can make a difference by volunteering with the Red Cross. They give their time and talent in a variety of ways, but they also get so much out of volunteering, from gratification and a sense of purpose to professional skill-building and the camaraderie of a second "family."

I'm a survivor of hurricane Ian. Met some fantastic people who've lost everything. Red Cross had literally "angels" who helped us, fed us, and kept us safe. I wanted to thank each and every one of them. Even the International Red Cross from Israel came to see if we needed help. It clearly touched me. Thank you.

I just signed up this evening. I have been meaning to for a while and finally took the step. I know that there is still a huge need for compassion and helping others in the world and I hope to help serve humanity in some sort of way.

I've been a Volunteer for almost three years now and I've experienced so much in such a short time. I plan on remaining a Volunteer for not only DAT, but Logistics, and the Sound The Alarm Teams as well, for many more years to come. I signed up the night of the Santa Rosa Fire in California, when half the city was burned to the ground. My first DAT call was in a neighboring city where a family lost everything they had. My first Shelter was during the Mendocino Complex fires, when a wildfire threatened my own hometown. And my first time at the warehouse was during the first few days into the aftermath of the Mendocino Complex Fire, along with a Logistics run up to the area. I've loved every moment of being a part of this Red Cross family and have made many friends along the way. And I still continue to give it all back to those who need not only myself but the rest of us in their most darkest of hours. I give my Time, Money, and Blood to ARC and I wouldn't trade this for anything. SVaughn (DCS Volunteer, Logistics, Sound The Alarm (ARC NCCR)

How do you have time for all of that? I want to volunteer but don't have time because of my job.

@@AquiVieneGioGio When there's a will, there's a way. A lot of my fellow Volunteers all have jobs as well, they somehow find a way to balance it out. I personally, am on Disability, so I have nothing but time. Medically I cannot work. But do find a drive to push myself beyond the limitations of my health, at the cost of it. Volunteering for the Red Cross, is all about time you can set aside to go do whatever you want to do with them. There's a lot of things you can do from home as well. I personally spent the better portion of time between 2013 and 2017 staying at home, wasting away my existence. So I'd never really do anything from home at the Red Cross, because I need to get out more often.

I'm considering on becoming a red cross CNA volunteer. This world is becoming selfish and greedy.People are fighting over fame, money, education, land, ect.People will steal, cheat, kill just to get to the top of the mountian. I just don"t get this world.I was named after one of my great grandmother,Irene Barrisco, who was a midwife in Mexico. She enjoyed donating her time and never asked for money. In return people would give her gifts like a chicken that help fed her family. After learning about my Great-grandmother Irene, her story inspires me to become like her.I want to make her legend come true again. If I have to sell all my stuff to travel and live a simple life I would. : )
