"About 4 inches"... guy in red shirt immediately zooms in 1 inch from the bow and holds it there

that is not yew... unless it is all sapwood, which makes no sense for bow building. More likely a hard maple, or hickory.

Great video; recurving my hickory flat bow seems a lot more tangible now that I know there is a way of going about it other than steaming the wood. Any specs to consider with the heat gun? Also, what kind of oil is being applied? Thanks again for a truly inspirational post.

At one point in the video, he tells the person with the gun "about three inches", but then, how many Watts is the gun? I'd start off at say six inches. If no bending occurs, then lower the gun a little. I'd also test by touch the temperature of the wood from the start of heating to the when the wood starts to bend and make a mental note of how that feels. As to the oil used, there are several oils used to finish off the appearance of wood - linseed, teak or cedar oils. I'd test out oils and the height of the gun on a scrap peice of wood about the same thickness as the end of the bow. I may very well be taking through my hat, but I'd stay away from cooking oils as they are readily biogradeable by bacteria and other micro-organisms. That can't be good for the wood if left on.

Yew wood - If ? Me, at home, I have Osage orange wood. But it is much more yellow than the one in this video. To heat and bend the wood, it is also good to heat it for 10 minutes with steam, in a large pot on the gas. and then with the electric hot air gun. Both methods are good. In my workshop in Montpellier, France, I make small Turkish and Mongolian bows. 350-400 g and 95 cm and 1.10 m. It is very difficult to manufacture. patrick

I tried steaming first, and ever since I saw this video, I only work with the heat gun and oil. Works like a charm for me. However, I only bend the tips which do not get too much strain, so I cannot comment if it makes the wood more brittle or anything. So far, none of the bended wood broke. I also use this method to remove twists and make the stave straight if it has a sideway bend.

Great video, I hunt with compound bow now, but will build my own trad bow soon. Any idea what sort of Australian timber is best for carving a self bow? Or what are the properties to look for in the wood itself?

Go to masters and get some red oak boards. Not many Aus woods are good for bows. Dont use pine or tas oak.

***** bowwoods | onemississipp is a good site to see which woods can be used for bows. And if the wood isnt there just cross reference it kind of thing. A few eucalyptus are supposedly OK bow woods. Damn snakewood looks awesome, wish i could get my hands on some.

You could also try Mulberry, It is supposed to make a very good bow. But if you can't find that then red oak is good as I made a longbow out of it.

Got to love these entitled people that thinks the world owe them something. This video is 5 years old so he more than likely doesn't even look here anymore. And even if he did, he doesn't have to answer any of your barely understandable questions. How about you buy a book on bow building and then fucking read it instead of expecting some random person on youtube holding your hand through the process.
