Recovery Straps & Tow Straps Safety Tips | Differences between Recovery Straps vs Tow Straps

In this video, US Cargo Control discusses how to use recovery straps and tow straps safely and responsibly. Learn about our light to heavy-duty recovery straps, and the differences between towing and recovery so you are using the correct car tie down strap. The main difference to know is what separates a tow strap from a recovery strap is the amount of "give" each strap possesses.

What are the differences between Recovery Straps and Towing Straps?
Our recovery straps are made from industrial-grade nylon for a higher stretch value and are available in a wide variety of widths, lengths, and plies, so it's easy to find the right one for your application. They're used for "recovering" a vehicle that's immobilized and are also known as snatch straps for the ability to "snatch" a vehicle from a stuck position.
Tow straps, on the other hand, are made from polyester, a material with less stretch than nylon. This reduces the chances of the car or pickup sling-shotting on the road as you tow it. They're used for towing a "free-wheeling" vehicle behind another, and usually has a hook on each end. These should NOT be used for recovering a vehicle because of the lack of stretch increases the chances that the strap could snap.

wow. this is info i needed! living in an urban part of Alaska there are occasionally times when i am involved in a vehicle recovery and none of the participants are experienced (and if they say they are they are not sufficiently informed/knowledgeable) in vehicle recovery safety--me included. this info will greatly increase my and other peoples safety (use of a blanket on the strap, safe distance in particular) and reduce the chance of damage to the involved vehicles. thank you!

What gear should you be in, low gear, 4WD, 2WD, lockers or just place the truck in Drive? This video could save lives by mentioning to cover the mid segment of the strap. Thanks.

This may sound dumb, but when should you use a tow rope with hooks attached to it?

i use a 55,000 lb strap and yes its a kinetic strap but doesnt always need to be used as one, if i followed everything stated in this video id have to own 100 or more different straps for all the different trucks and stuck situations i take part in, this isnt 100 perfect info but its good for beginners, my advise never use a strap with metal hooks EVER and everyone who goes off road should have a pintle hitch for recovery front n rear rated at 30 tons :) the ball on your hitch is very very weak
