It would be cool if the gold Butch found somehow ended up melted into jewellery that his wife can have with her but it may not have been enough in terms of the amount of gold. It was very nice of you to do this in memory of butch and of course you (and all of us) got some fun out of the process/video.

Shane, forgive a boneheaded question: Why not fabri-cobble a simple mercury retort? (They are only like 180 bucks ready made, if you want) Just seemed like a bad idea free venting boiling mercury nitrate fumes. With a retort you didn't have to worry as much about the fumes, and the mercury could then be sold/disposed of. Anyways, I highly enjoyed the video, and good on you for doing this for Butch and his widow.

Just a suggestion for cleaning the mercury sample. Get a large needle from a plastic/fiberglass store, with or without the needle remove the plunger push a wad of cotton ball into the bottom of the needle barrel. Add the mercury, replace the plunger, add distilled water to a beaker, submerge the needle point and push it in. The mercury will flow out, will not splatter and when submerged will trap mercury vapours. It is a bit safer for you that way. Great video, good of you to help the lady, sorry Butch is no longer prospecting here. Cheers

Shane, I have been a follower for a long time. Mercury begins to vaporize at room temperature. So When working with mercury you always do it under water otherwise you run the danger of inhaling toxic fumes. When you were using the Miller table you had the water running way to fast(its not a sluce). Run it low and slow. If you see one piece of gold moving, it's to fast. A miller table is for cleaning concentrates to 99-100%.

@@Klesh Perfect. I am more worried about your health. The Mercury is very dangerous (from what they say). I played with it as a kid. No wonder I'm all messed up🤣. All the steps you did were good but if you do it under water it adds a level of protection. The mercury can't become airborne under water. Just looking out brother.

I used to do this with stainless steel sintered filters, and I would say that if your apparatus is giving off brown nitrous oxides, you've got the hotplate a little bit too high. Doing that doesn't do anything except create gas pollution, so turn it down a tad. When you're getting rid of acid, add the acid to the water and use plenty of water. Oh, and two pairs of gloves, one on top of the other. Doing this always scared me worse than pipetting phosphoric acid.

I'm an old ac guy of 40 years and the old t stats were mercury bulb stats. The Mercury is very magnetic and conductive. I wonder if your machine would separate the amalgam from the mercury. It all bonds together in a ball on a magnet. My old boss used to save the mercury from the old stats and spilled one, He took a magnet and it picked it all up and it made one ball, very cool video. As always I'm one of the 98 percent still watching!

We used a wet sheep chamois like your paper towel but non tear tough. The new neodymium magnets change the whole game. The magnetic sand can be caught before it plugs the riffles and in much larger quantities. Grinding the black sand under water with lab grade gloves in an amalgamated copper pan will get the maximum values out of iron stained gold. A retort is always a big plus and in some areas additional mercury may be recovered. I would hesitate to use any acid outside a laboratory environment because the fumes can be deadly, excepting 5% vinegar, under cool temps to keep the mercury free of oils. You can get very good at this and there is a lot of gold to be had in some old mine dumps. Gold fever is very real, better watch it!

I sometimes use mercury to collect gold. I have a small medicine syringe about 1/2 inch in diameter and 4 inches long with a removable plunger. I put a small piece of cotton batten in the bottom, pour in my mercury amalgam and put the plunger back in and slowly push the plunger down, squeezing out the clean mercury. If you hold the tip of the syringe near the bottom of your container while squeezing, you will not get any splashing of the mercury. Take out the cotton batten after and process to get your gold. You can also use the syringe to suck up the mercury after and put back in your bottle.😃

I wouldn’t just assume that the magnetic material is devoid of gold. I’ve read papers that successfully extract locked up gold from “Barron black sand” already extracted with mercury. It may not be worth the trouble considering that this material came from Alaska. But, it’s well known that black sands from tropical regions contain significant gold values. For example, in Brazil, they call it black gold and I’ve seen prospectors find black gold nuggets from sluicing material in virginia. In tropical environments the gold is often concealed by organic debris & iron, which is why the 17lb gold nugget found by Conrad Reed in North Carolina in the late 1700’s was used as a door stop for several years. It simply didn’t look like gold because it was likely a consecration produced by bacteria in a tropical environment.
