Im getting tired of the constant denigration of Jonas Kaufmann and Sondra Rhadvanovsky in comments. Im prepared to admit that there may have been more great singers in the past...Im old enough to have seen many of them live....but we shouldn't be deaf to the considerable merits of some of today's singers. Kaufmanns voice is not as big as some tenors of the past, but he is the complete artist. Rhadvanovsky has not only an enormous voice equal in size to any other divas I've heard, but she is also the complete artist.

I agree. I would say Kaufmann may not have the tonal beauty of some Italian tenors of the past - many of those frequently named by his critics being lyric rather than dramatic tenors anyway - but he has a consummate artistry and sensitivity to the text and to each detail of the setting that is much more rare than a beautiful voice.

Especially curious about Spyres' performance now, guess will be as one of the 3 sages' gorgeous singing lines. Had already viewed excerpts of Radvanovsky's & Jaho's exquisite role embodiments. Not to mention my expectations about Kaufmann's entire "Calaf" role.

Being part of a studio recording involves a TON of mental pressure. Everything must be (practically) perfect. It is from these studio recordings that our expectations as listeners and consumers of classical music have been elevated to impossible-to-please heights… and to be a vocal soloist in one must involve EVEN MORE pressure!!!! I think that those present for this recording did a phenomenal job, especially for such a grandiose and HUGE opera as Turandot.

It’s a little odd that they talk so much about the complete Alfano ending here (which I very much welcome), yet include no excerpts of it and overlay that discussion with the most famous (and overused) excerpt of the opera.

Classical music is not dead, the way Ravel rivisited Mussorgsky's Pictures In An Exhibition, l trully wish our contemporary artists improve some classical tracks if not this Turandot successful, orchestra conductors know so well, sometimes it takes only an accent, a switch of a rythm to wake up audience and give it new sensations what the audience is expecting for, being surprised and...delighted. Try to imagine Puccini audience, how classical composers had to face their own public reputation and get to the point. During Puccini ages most powerful men were like Putin, eager to seek for new enemies to fight against and send to war other young soldiers for a matter of arrogance or foolish pride, greed or just stupid rivalry, all European countries were on fire...these Opera achievements are like...stay home and make love guys, forget war disputes once for all, they still are of maximum emotional impact...what about Maestro Kaufmann next acting the Puccini role in a movie? We are seeking for new welfare strategies, most people is crazy about cinema shows, let's give audience what it wants until you become like Olympic games champions, famous in 190 countries world wide, from my behalf l would donate an Opera House each village on this planet...in purpose to save any perrishing village. Covid pandemic isolation was good to show us how tied we are, you can start with a village called Wuhan that nobody knew anything before about it, think about it guys, it has only three milion abitants mostly Opera lovers because...it happens to me too, lying myself l live elsewhere instead of this never ending Italian drama, like a satanic sect, no matter where you turn is another death threat, if l try to get away, they send the hitmen executors to eliminate me because... nobody gives any damn on me. The..poor dreamer is the most dangerous human being that can not be kept under control, yeah, isn't it funny?

Why not instead record the reconstructed ending by Janet Maguire from the original sketches of Puccini (which Alfano barely used), of which there is no recording to date? That would've been much more interesting. What a missed opportunity.

True, why not. But a great reconstruction is creative rather than constructive, compositional rather than architectural, and possibly someone considered Alfano a better composer than Maguire.

Comparing this recording to Nillson and Corelli is unfair. This is a great cast and everyone sings strong and passionate. Part of me wishes Renee Fleming had sung Liu but she’s turned Puccini down over and over and maybe she feels too old for this now. This lady does a great job too though. 5/5.

Michael Spyres is probably *THE* greatest tenor singing today, and yet he is cast as Altoum. That's like casting Joan Sutherland as Barbarina in Marriage of Figaro. And why is the chorus all spread apart like that? Surely no one is still falling for this covid nonsense??

@@Yves_Ka , omicron...you mean the least symptom-causing of all the covid variants? Yeah, I remember all right. My friend, that's what viruses do, they spread....and well before covid-19, people have been passing viruses to each other since forever. And while omicron may have been slightly more virulent than the original covid-19 virus, it mutated into a very weak version that most people won't even be symptomatic with, or if they do, very, very mild symptoms. You know this is all manipulation and absurdity when musicians wear masks, but cut holes in the middle to accommodate the mouthpiece of their woodwind or brass instruments......or think that social distancing saves lives while waiting to be seated at restaurants, and then crowd together when seated at a table, with masks off, since you know, viruses are smart and don't bother people when they're eating. As I said previously, people had an excuse to be ignorant back in 2020 because they watch mainstream news and it was all relatively new....but there is no excuse in 2021 onwards, when by that time we've had tons and tons of widely available information about what this virus is all about. Anybody with a simple curiosity could have researched the truth.
