1.) I’m so relieved to see VO Buzz Weekly putting out a new episode. They’ve been my masterclass on all things VO since I got into this crazy industry. And 2.) What a perfect symbiosis between performer and director. Literally ALL the notes Chuck gave are actionable for anyone watching (and self-directing their own VO audition/sessions). And Stacy is just stellar behind the mic. And Chuck’s notes were so thoughtful; thinking often of the bigger picture of the narrative flow of the final edited demo. These two ROCK!!

Stacey, of course, nailed these perfectly, but Chuck's direction was deceptively masterful. On nearly every script, there were moments when I was thinking to myself that Stacey should try this or that, and Chuck invariably directed her to try nearly the opposite of what I had in mind. Each time he was right on the money! You don't get an ear like that without a lot of work. This is an excellent demonstration of an excellent demo session!

@@vobuzzweekly Well, it's absolutely true. Every word of it. The entire VO world just LOVES Chuck and Stacey to pieces, and I'm one of 'em. Maybe some day you could do a seminar on how Stacey puts her hard copy together??? And, maybe Chuck could do a session on how he puts all the raw audio together with music, effects, etc? Just sayin'.

@@vobuzzweekly On second thought, that might be like asking Colonel Sanders for his secret fried chicken recipe, (ain't gonna happen!) But, I've always been curious about how and where Stacey finds the hard copy, how much is her own original writing, how much is editing preexisting copy, and then when Chuck has all the raw "takes," how he slices and dices all that material, how he chooses the sequence, etc. On Stacey's latest commercial demo, it seemed like each of Stacey's segments were no more than ten or fifteen seconds long originally, but, then, it appeared Chuck extracted just a very brief line or two out of each commercial piece. On a totally unrelated front, I noticed Chuck chose the Sennheiser 416 shotgun microphone for the new booth. I've always been curious about that. The 416, of course, was originally met for on location film shoots where the boom microphone would be just out of the top of the frame and be directional and reject any noise not coming from the main source. In a booth like Chucks, I can't imagine extraneous outside noise would be a problem, but, I could be wrong. I'm wondering if my friend Larry Hudson had any input into that microphone choice.

@@stevekrumlauf8178 lol you’re right. The secret sauce can never be revealed but hey you get big points for asking. :) for many years the sennheiser 416 has been the go to mic of choice for promos because when used at close proximity it slices through the production. Still to this day it’s widely used for promo and trailer work. When I was choosing a mic for production u I tested easily 8 mics from Neumann and Sennheiser the the 416 sounded best on men and women most often. It quickly became my mic of choice. As long as you have a quiet pro booth to work in the 416 is a great choice. 👍

As always, informative, inspirational, fun and on point. I love the fact that you as an old school engineer, embraced and encouraged the rest of the VO community to grab on to the current state of the market and soar in such a positive light. I can only imagine that this is a big factor in why you are so successful and considered as an industry standard. And Stacey, You demonstrated how a professional works in the booth. Your attention do detail, focus on the director and willingness to take your performance in a way that you may not have originally thought to go. Then you ended up nailing the part. It is always a great joy to watch you two working together. I hope to be able to see you working together for a long time to come. Thank you for all you do for this awesome community. This is one of the times I wish I lived on that other coast from where I am, I would want to stop over and see the masters at work.

Awesome Chuck and Stacey! Quick question, when fully producing the demo, do you do all your processing to the vocals (including normalizing), then lay that on top of the production elements? Then do you remaster it down to say an "mp3" or whatever is needed? Thanks
@vobuzzweekly
Жыл бұрын
Hi mark, thank you for the comment and question. Yes the first thing I edit, clean up, normalize and process is the voice. The voice should be the star in a demo. Then we start playing around with music, and different vibe ideas and then it’s sound effects. Then we mix, master the whole demo. After then you can bounce down your mix to whatever format you need ie wav, mp3 etc.

@@vobuzzweekly Man, thanks so much Chuck! I produced a ton of radio spots about 20 years ago, but that's meatball surgery. Not a lot of finesse. If you have time, could you expand on the mix and master part? Either way, I really appreciate your time. Say thanks to Stacey as well.
