And that was 20+ years ago. So if you are still successfully using 8rtrack, I'd like to know how, are they store bought cartridges from the 80s or did you buy some stash of tapes from radioshack before they went out of business and record your existing library to new tapes? While many lower quality units may be built like this, it is in no way whatsoever a measure if a turntable is quality. What about cartridge types, MM vs MC, DAC’s, platter types, so many details that you could actually point out to help newbies, but to say “if it hangs off it’s bad”. Is stupidly ignorant.

It plays well, has a decent moving magnet cartridge tracking within spec, good speed stability and sounds very listenable through HiFi speakers. The built in speakers aren't great but I never use them. As a second player it's perfectly decent player/turntable. I'd recommend it over the usual suitcase players for sure. Also there's plenty of very good quality vintage turntables that don't have full sized platters that people would pay a fortune for.

I bought a “good” turntable that was still the best of the red crap (sorry cap haha😂) needles… the records still jumped and I thought they were scratched. Specially the new artists. Invest on a player. But most importantly, a good needle! Unless you don’t care about the longevity of your records. They all play AMAZINGLY since I started watching this page almost five years ago. Thank you for all the help. 🎉😊

I usually look for the red needle, lol I always like to ruin people’s fun when they’re enjoying music by telling them they don’t get the same quality like I do and then they tell me no one cares so I go home and listen to my Radiohead FLAC and realize I can’t eve tell the diffrence

Bought The Mom's one of those suitcase-style Record Players off of WOOT a few weeks ago for $20. It really doesn't sound bad. It's simple to use and fine for Her. It's not something I would ever buy for Myself. I have a 30+ year old PIONEER DD Turntable that I recently retro-fitted (new cartridge, etc). But I'm looking at going more "modern" in the future.

What distinguishes ‘quality from crap’ is a turntable’s ability to accommodate phono cartrige upgrades. Any turntable is only as good as its cartrige. The next thing is obviously stability, so it’s best for the turntable to support the whole record. For something decent, expect to spend around $250 for a turntable and $300 for a decent cartrige with an elliptical stylus. I highly recommend the Ortofon Blue.

Bro, I have one of those $50 suitcase record players hooked up to my living room stereo, it sounds really good but I know an Audio Technica is a bit better and am saving up for one. If a suit case player is all you can afford and have a living room stereo to hook it up to, then that's all you need if you're just the casual listener, and nothing beyond that.

Sony made a semi portable player which about the entire record stuck out except for of course, where the needle and the drive mechanism is located. That's also one of their most prestigious players. Also, the Crosby featured in the example photo is actually a pretty decent player for the price.

Basically literally any player in a suitcase that costs at least 30-50 bucks. It’s fine if you have them but it’s a great idea to invest on a “legit quality” one. Low costs players will typically wear out the grooves because it’s made with cheap needle material, but that’s really if you play the record too much
