I disagree about buying new over vintage turntables. Often times, buying a used, older turntable can be cost effective and a really thrilling way to connect with the past. A broken stylus or faulty belt can easily be replaced. Also, some people, like myself, enjoy the aesthetic of an older machine. Not knocking new turntables, just have a differing view on your tip about buying new over old.

I love my Sony Zx6. Cassette's sound clear and beautiful. Radio literally has no distortion on max even with deep heavy bass. Using any record player that can connect to this is just amazing. I played Metallica's black album on vinyl and wow. Got the cops called on me.

Bought an LP120 for my girlfriend for christmas based, in part, on your recommendation. GOODNESS vinyl can sound great! I had no idea how good they can sound, compared to just slappin' on some Spotify. Granted, the ritual of on/off, don't touch that, brush and be careful, gives you a whole other respect and sense of the fact that you just put on music. But still. Thank you.

I bought a Project Debut Carbon DC for my 21st birthday back in October!! Excellent turntable! Are you going to do a top 10 albums of 2016 list?
I've been learning a lot from your videos, thanks for everything. I'm just beggining my collection. I have a Crosley... Now I know you're not a fan, but thanks to you now I'm saving money to get an Audiotechnica lp120. Love your channel, keep the good job!
Lovin the info on this vid. Didn't u make a video like this before? Go Vinyl Army!!! :P

Hey Vinyl Eyezz! Thanks so much for your tips! I commented on a previous video basically adamant that I just wanted to get my brother a portable turn table for practicality. I'm so glad I got no response to that. I get it now, not ruining your records is the most important part of it all. I got my brother that Audio-Technica LP60 because of you and some Edifier 4" Active Bookshelf Speakers to go with it. Simple clean cost efficient set up! From my brother and me, Thanks and keep up what you're doing!

YEA, FUCK CROSLEY! ahah. I'm sure the quality of build would be similar but I was gonna just get'em a 1byone portable turntable. Just an fyi. but really, Thanks! Keep up the great work you're doing on here.
Enjoyed the info! You make some great points and having separate components is the best. Now, there are good reasons for getting a vintage turntable. Some of the older direct drives can be refurbished to play just fine after some cleaning and replacing or fixing some parts. I'm currently trying to find an older Technics to refurb as a project to later set up in my living room with an extra preamp I have. IMHO a turntable is best without a built-in preamp as I've mentioned before that I've ripped mine out of my AT-LP120 a few years ago. Good plugs for the U-Turn and Project and they are good ones to consider.
Man i can't wait to get my first turntable, I already own two records (Filosofem by Burzum and In Cauda Venenum by Opeth) . These videos are super useful
Don't let this discourage you completely from buying older turntables. I got an Audio Technica LP-60 for $60 and it had a tracking issue that caused it to skip all over the record, and it sounded very flat. I Returned it and replaced it with a free Technics SL-Q300 from my uncle's garage and it sounded warm, rich, and much better than the lp-60. Older turntables can be awesome provided that they are from a good brand and have all the bells and whistles like anti-skate and a counter weight. If you do need a new stylus or belt, they're very cheap on Ebay and my turntable happened to be direct drive with an upgraded cartridge from Shure. Cheap turntables have always been bad, so don't buy an older turntable if it was low end when it came out.

AT LP 60 are fairly cheaply made, only sounding better than those suitcase ceramic cartridge plastic platter turntables having a magnetic cartridge. They have similar sort of tonearms though.
Hi @Vinyl Eyezz, I'm thinking about getting the audio technica lp60 and was wondering if you had recommendations for powered speakers (affordable) that I could use with it. Thank you for your informative videos btw!
Some (mostly older) amplifiers also have builtin pre-amps. They usually are marked with a phono input.
I totally disagree with ur tip to buy only new turntables. When ure on a budget 100 bucks is a kinda sweet spot, unfortunately there aren't any good new turntables so in order to achieve best sound quality buying used turntable is a clever step. Many used turntables have much better specs (for example - wow and flutter on old japanese turntables

I agree. The best turntable I ever bought is my current Technics one from the late 70s/early 80s. What makes it so great is that it is a quartz direct drive. I have never had a turntable Be more accurate on speeds. I bought it for $25. I bought an $8 grounding cable off of eBay and I am set. It's fully automatic. Absolutely love it.

Most vintage turntables I've gotten my hands on usually only needed a new stylus or a new cartridge or a new belt. As they were built to last, it's very rare for the motors on the vintage turntables to go bad, especially since most used an AC motor. Even then, oiling the motor nurses it back to health (the SAE-20 oil costs less than $3). Most of the issues are a missing cartridge or stylus, or the belt missing. An AT3600 can be obtained for less than $25 (or the AT92E if it's a P-Mount). For belt drives, the belts can be obtained for less than $20 (as long as they're the same size, it should work). Modern turntables use a DC motor, and these tend to wear out faster than an AC motor. If you know where to look for, you can find a reliable vintage turntable for dirt cheap, and 75% of the time, will be in excellent working condition (such as a Yamaha PF-50 direct drive turntable, which only cost me $8, only needed a cartridge).
i got an audio technica at lp60 for christmas. its pretty good!! i also got the klipsch R-14M speakers. my receiver is coming in the mail tomorrow :)
Merry Xmas Jarrett.
Another good add-on is a speedbox for belt driven turntables. Saves you having to lift the (often heavy) platter off each time to change the speed. Couldn't do without mine for my Rega Planar 3.
I just found an old BSR turntable candle turntable that someone put at the curb. Cleaned and tuned it up sounds pretty good.
great video! would love something like this but for speakers and amplifiers for those of us who don't really know what to look for when going for something affordable that still sounds great :)
Jarrett, Have you looked into fluance record players? I have the RT80 and love it, bought it over the AT-LP120 because of the design and had good reviews to go with it
I just got my first record player for Christmas !! It doesn't have speakers because it's a Bluetooth one and it connects to my Bluetooth speaker. Got 4 records atm can't wait to collect more !!!
I have the same as you,Jared. The Lp 120 and love it!
Hi Jarrett, you mention the hotly debated topic of 'new vs vintage' turntables. What are your thoughts on the similar issue of new reissues vs high quality original records of an album? As in, is it worth getting an early (good quality) pressing of say Led Zeppelin I, or should you just go ahead and get a brand new reissue?
I got a Numark suitcase style turntable for Christmas. However, it seems that it isn't putting that much pressure on the vinyl. But, I don't know a whole ton about absolutely everything, so there might still be damage going on. should I consider replacing soon?
Right so; say I’ve just bought the Audio Technica lp60. Can I just buy a set of speakers with the relevant inputs (I.e the red and white bits) and play my music through that? Do I NEED any other equipment?
Getting an LP60 for Christmas with some smashing Pumpkins records. I did not take your information for granted and bought a bad turntable from audiology. Now all I do is trust you and do exactly what you say. Thanks for another great video. Now could you talk about the smashing Pumpkins in the future?
so i just recently got the audio technica LP60 and i wanted to know what are some good speakers for it? preferably $100 or less price range. thank you
Merry Christmas!!!!!!
hi jarrett been on the fence for a while and decided to dip my toe in the vinyl world with the audio technica lp60 which i have reserved at richer sounds till boxing day here in the uk and i have made space in my set up ready for it arrival.
What do you think about S-shaped tonearms? Do they sound better than straight ones? Also, have you got any opinion about the Numark TT USB?
I'm just getting into record collecting and was wondering if you had any suggestions for speakers to pair with and audio technica lp60 at a reasonable price. Thanks
Hi! i have and old (but brand new) SONY PS-LX56 Semiautomatic Turntable that i find in a garage market, but i can't use 'cause i don't have and pre.amplifier, it's 100% new and i looks amazing, sounds great (with the sound of the needle in the disc) the question is: do you recommend use this turntable? or i should buy something actual? Thanks a lot, i love your videos, especially the cassette ones :v
What do you think about the Marley turntable? Have you reviewed it?
should i purchase victrola if i'm getting started with vinyls? it's cheap but it's also portable..
a used Technics 1200/1210 is a good way to go. Most record stores know a place that doctors/tune up use Technics MK models. not so much for other brands....... u can also mod them to self ground on the turntable body, add more coils to the direct motor, swap out the rca cables, adjust the pitch to +/- 50% instead of 8% lol
Hey @Vinyl Eyezz how many records do you have in total and how many years ago did you get your first record ?
Which active speakers would you recommend for a newbie?
I just came upon a vinyl collection of old 331/3 an 78 RPM records. Looking for a turntable and amplifier. I like TIL he AT 120 for price and versatility. One question is, do I need a special stylus for the 78 records and what do u recommend. Also, what’s a decent amplifier/receiver under $350. Appreciate your input.
very informative video lots of good stuff! one thing that bugs us all i am sure is how prices of vinyl and Turntables has jumped up so quickly! i sold off my turntables 30 years ago but kept alot of vinyl so i am back into again with a vengeance! thanks
I have a Jensen which i just got for Christmas would this be a good beginner record player very curious. Saving up to invest in a U Turn.
Hey Jarret, Quick Question, In This Video You Said The Audio technica Lp 60 was a good turntable, but it didn't meet some of your standerds you said turntables should meet. So is it still a good turntable compared to other ones at that price? I don't want to spend a lot and don't want a portable turnatable.
Hey Jarret, My dad recently dug up his old Thorens td 166 mkII for storage and said I could use it as it was a very high end player back in the old days. While i'm sure what he is saying is true, I also know how fast technology develops through time. So my question is how does this player compare to ones of today and is it worth keeping/using. Many thanks :)
I have an art and sound 6 in 1 retro turntable right now so I need help should i get a marrantz tt1pl50,panasonic sf 620 or an at pl50 Or a fisher Mt 660 or Mt 664 or a Technics drive automatic system SL-L3
Got an lp60 for Christmas really happy with it
Jarret, I got an ion max All-in-one turntable. I also have access to speakers which I can plug in to the turntable. Unfortunately, it has no counterweight, so my question is, will this ruin my records? I got the limited edition repressing of the Drive soundtrack so I want to make sure I keep it in good condition.
I own a Uturn Orbit, it is amazing! The sound quality blows me away. It has a built in preamp and a counterweight. Plus if your looking for a record player made in the USA, well the Orbit is made in the USA.
What if I want a portable suitcase style turn table do you have a recommendation
What are your thoughts on the AT-LP3XBT?
i love your video. in from Mexico. y love te vynil discs. and it's so difficult buy a vinyl player in this town. :/
Hey Jarrett, I'm looking for a cd player to add to my set-up. I just don't know what to look for, they're quite expensive for hi-fi set-ups. So i was thinking of looking for a second hand at a flea market, good idea or no?
@vinyleyezz
7 жыл бұрын
+Dangerous Cult Leader you can definitely try that route man! You never know what you're gonna find! But good used online brands are gonna be Sony and Pioneer, you should be able to find some in good condition on eBay as well. Good luck!
Hi! I'm new to record players and I want to ask if all suitcase-style record players are bad. I know that Crosleys are bad but idk about any other brands? Also I'm kinda on a budget so do you think that if I got a Crosley and replaced the needle it would be okay? If not do you have any vintage style turntables you would recommend? I'm a fan of the style but if most new ones nowadays suck I don't care about how it looks and just get something you mentioned in the video. I'm not that serious about collecting vinyl, and I'm not audiophile so I just kinda want one for fun :P Lol sorry I'm so clueless no hate please Also your videos are really informative and well-made. Keep going! :D
Hey what's a good turntable with Bluetooth so I can play music through my bose soundtouch 10 & 30
I have a question, I have a polariod portable, is that a good record player? also, I have a subscription to vynl and they are selling a turn table, are those good?
i got a crosley c8 before knowing anything about crosley cruisers. is it still good or should i ditch it?
Hi Jarrett, are you planning review of Gramovox Vertical Turntable?
Literally gonna watch every video cause I want this to be a hobby of mine and I just ordered one today😊
I own a PL-990 Pioneer turntable. I haven't had any complaints about it but I did buy it on November 21st a day after my birthday, so I haven't been using it for long but my records seem fine out of the 12 I own 11 of them are original pressings and they seem to be playing fine. The PL-990 is definitely a good choice for a starter turntable.
Getting the Pro-ject essential III for christmas - can't wait i feel like i'm 12 years old again lol
Ok I understand the need for the turn table ,the speakers , and the pre amp but what about the amplifier ? is that really needed and what is it for ? (c'mon know it alls help me out here)
my mom has a record player 1991. will it be good for listening to music
I currently own a marantz TT-140 gold series turntable which is from the 70s that I entirely rebuilt and it has astounding quality, have you ever heard anything about these turntables?
I got an project debut series 3 SE, I nice clean vinyl with no crackle at the beginning is.. orgasmic...
What about the Rega Planar 1? I'm thinking of buying one. Any body got any opinions or able to help me decide? Cheers in advance!!
bat for lashes! my copy of the haunted man just arrived in the mail. took me a while to find it at a decent price
I have a question, if anyone could answer if be happy. I recently bought an LP on white vinyl, as I opened it, I noticed there were black smears on it, which I presume is ink from the label. Does anyone know if it'll damage the vinyl, or affect the sound?
What sleeves do you use for your 78 rpm records?
What is your opinion on the Teac TN-300?
Great video Jarrett! I just got enough money to buy a decent turntable. And don't worry it's not a Crosley, it's a Numark TTUSB Belt driven turntable, And it costs $200 AUD! I'm gonna order it very soon :) I'm very excited!.
I have a Technics SL-3 linear tracking turntable from the 80's that I use, I got it a little while back. It still had it's original Technics cart in it, but I bought a new stylus for it and it had a lot of sibilance and just sounded awful. But I then bought a new Audio Technica cart online and changed the cart and it now sounds great.
What's your opinion on numark? Just ordered one
How do you keep your records up on the wall for display?
So what do you think about the Crosleys that aren't all-in-ones?
Dj mixers are good pre amps . And can be picked up fairly cheep second hand . And have top Middle and bass controls usually, which can be fed to a set of good quality pc speakers for a small set up .
About the counterweight, the lp 60 is an exeption, Because it uses a spring instead of a counterweight to adjust the tracking force. If you look at the back of the tonearm, you'll see it. and the tracking force is fixed in 3.5 grams, wich is safe for your loved records!
What do you think about an Dual 505-3 ?
Hey Jarrett, I love your videos and I was wondering if you or anyone else in the comments section could help me. See I got 2 records for Christmas yesterday and they're my first records but my setup is really lackluster and I don't have the money to upgrade or to buy any of the equipment to clean records and my stylus and stuff. So I was wondering if you or anyone else could share some advice so I can properly care for my records and equipment and get the best sound possible for what I have. Thanks
03:41 Is it ok that I use a PANASONIC SG X10 to listen to records?
Don’t buy a Crosley suitcase-style turntable, absolutely! However, I love my Crosley C8 - heavy plinth and platter, decent AT cartridge, interchangeable headshells, adjustable tracking weight and anti-skate, and, best of all, the sound is marvelous.

Thank you! I have a c200 direct drive, AT cartridge. It sounds amazing!
Speaker you're using Klipsch model please? And that speaker have a amplifier that speaker?
Hey, I got a shitty suitcase "trurntable" much like the Crosley except it's from Auna and I have their Peggy Sue model. Now the stylus looks the same as for the Crosley and there are almost no differences from the Crosely. Now when I saw your video about how bad the Crosley is and it's variants, I got afraid that my dad's vinyls will get ruined and I do want to listen to my favourite artists like The Beatles and The Beach Boys. In response to the point you always you point out about too much pressure on the stylus, I actually scotch-taped some pennies on the balance weight. I can't see much difference in sound on my Beach Boys vinyl which seemed ruined already when I got it, but none the less, will this pennie weight i added relief the pressure on the stylus and my records will live longer?
I have a 4-speed Numark turntable that can be hooked up to a sound system using RCA jacks or a computer via USB. It also has an input jack to play other devices through it, ie tape, mp3 or CD.
i have a old 70's Philips system with build in turntable but the speakers are external
Hey Jared, Can you do a video on Jensen turntables? I currently own one, I don't know if they are as bad as Crosley turntables. Thanks
I have a couple of 78's and I like playing some of them purposely at 33 1/3 because it makes them sound creepy and they are perfect for setting a creepy atmosphere
I love my LP60, hoping to upgrade to 120 next year!!!
Hi thank you for your videos. How about Crosley Bermuda Dansete? Is that better than usual crossley? And GPO Bermuda? GPO is better than Crosley? thank you
whats your take on the crosley c100?
Hey Jared about record player changers? Or record players that have 16RPM etc.
What is your opinion on capehart suitcase record player???
Hey, what turntable would you recommend that can play 78's? I have seen a few on ebay that are similar to my current turntable but cant decide which aould be the best. Follow up, do any turntables that you recommend come with seperate/interchangeable 78 needles? I love Hank Williams Sr. and have my eyes on some of his original 78's from the late 40's/early 50's at an antique shop and ebay. But unfortunately my current turn table doesnt play 78's.

Make sure your turntable has a 1/2" headshell and isn't P-mount. Direct drive is usually the way to go to get 78 rpm cheaply. Once you've done that, Shure, A-T, Nagaoka, and Ortofon have reasonably priced 78 rpm cartridges/styli. I personally prefer the Nagaoka because you can get plug-in 0.7, 1.0, 3.0, and 3.5 mil styli.

What about DC eletro-magnetic brushless direct-drive, like on the Pioneer PL-350?
