Record Labels Take Note! This Is What Music Fans Really Want!!

Музыка

Sometimes it seems that record labels have no idea how to put together good boxsets, greatest hits, and deluxe editions from our favorite bands. For this episode, Anthony and I discuss the things that not only frustrate us, but also what makes for good packaging, content and value when it comes to releasing material from our favorite bands.

I really like the fact that despite Anthony talking to Brendan, he’s paying attention to his customers in the store and always greeting them. Excellent customer service Anthony I used to work at Blockbuster music and always had to do the same thing.

He always does. The reason the videos with Anthony fade in and out is the store and its customers always come first. We film around him running the store. It also adds some color and character to each video.

I personally believe that 'collectable' box sets are the last vestige effort the record companies have for physical media. We can debate if vinyl or CDs are making a 'come-back'; In retrospect, those mediums are not selling nearly as much as they where 30 years ago - and I don't think they ever will. I love the Beatles and led Zeppelin Box sets - yeah they're not for everyone. I follow most of the CD collectors (Brendon, Sea of Tranquility) on YT and listen to their opinions. They certainly do influence me on musical options or genres to listen (thanks Brendon!). Being in my 50s, I haven't listened to radio in 20+ years; the last physical media I've bought was the Beatles latest anniversary box (Rubber Soul). I've fully embraced digital media, its variety, its abundance and its quality (to my ears!). I always look forward to listening to guys - keep up the nick picking and bickering - I enjoy them!

I've wondered this for a long time. With the internet/streaming, why not just put this stuff up for free? Live shows are fine to sell, but the demos I can't imagine listening to more than a few times. And even then, it's more for curiosity than something I would listen to as an album.

Aloha Brendon & Sound Exchange , Great topic. Not only are we as consumers not buying these outrageous overpriced box sets as a everyday record Collector does. But these independent record Shops are getting stuck with them. Record Companies think these independent record shops are Museums, RSD was started to help the independent shops to survive & be able to compete with the big box stores. Instead these manufacturers & wholesalers are killing the hands that feeds them. Recently here in Honolulu Hawaii, one of our independent record shops, had a sale on old stock including box sets, which I personally don't buy because of ridiculous prices for items I won't need, except the music. I did end up dishing out little over $1260.00 on this sale. Which also included that Nirvana Box set you showed. It was already marked down to $200.00, so I got it for 50% off the lowest mark down price. For this one I paid $100.00 + tax ,out the door. Just to give an example. I got a great deal, but what about my independent record shop here in Honolulu Hawaii, they won't be around long if this keeps up, as it is here on Oahu we just have this shop that brings in a lot on RSD. These shops here don't have deep pockets, that's why they had the sale to have cash flow, so they can but for black Friday. Thanks again for a great topic. Even if I don't collect Cd's as you do ,I still enjoy these videos. Looking forward to watching your next video. Mahalo Ed

Completely agree with you. But these big sharks have no empathy for independent stores. In fact, they would surely love to see them die a quick death. But we, the hard-core music fans, will fight to our last breath to keep them alive. Also, buying second hand and from thrift shops is a huge middle finger to these money hungry labels

The Kiss Destroyer box set, for an example, sold out fast. So appealing to fellow fans not to support overpriced releases is more important. Record companies won't care when these super deluxes are selling well and selling fast. Not sure why there's hate for a DVD or bluray included when the best sets you showed - Harvest, Whitesnake - also do this. Wonderful live footage, documentaries, behind the recording session, retrospectives, music videos...don't see much of a downside here. Or a 5.1 (which needs a DVD) or Atmos (which needs a bluray) mix? These are wonderful additions. Raw material costs have gone up in the last couple of years - massively. Everything from energy to food has gone up. When this happens, this sort of product isn't immune. Again, while people continue to support them...listening to fans asking for better prices isn't going to happen.

Agree with a lot of your points - especially now at the point of repeat 'anniversary' boxsets - maybe just release new boxsets in different formats or take advantage of new technology instead of weird musical arrangements that punish music buyers. I get that boxsets are generally more expensive than a standard release, but I know they pack so many of them with useless trinkets that we don't need or want.

Hi Brendon. I wanted to write you a message of appreciation, but I wasn't sure which vid I should do it on. Just generally I'd like to say that I enjoy your vids nearly every morning with a coffee. It feels like hanging out with a music bud that is way more open-minded than me.😊 I really like your attitude with Canadian music in particular. There's not an ounce of condescension or smirking when discussing Canuck music, unlike almost every other US based channel. 😊 I also really dig these videos with Anthony. I know dudes just like him. He's unfiltered, committed, opinionated with a reason, and a great value to this channel. This particular video is so relevant to the industry as I feel alot of the time the consumer is unheard by the labels and manufacturers, and we get alot of absurd, bloated, out-of-touch, vanity-based products that aren't very fan friendly. Maybe if you make more of these someone in the industry will catch on, and try to set a new standard for consumer friendly products. Keep doing great work. Your friend 😂 Ryan

Hi Ryan, thank you so much for your letter of appreciation. It means a lot to know that the video content that I’m making and how I present the information is connecting with you. I’ve attempted to gear my channel towards areas that I felt were missing on KZread. When I would look for content on KZread and before I created my channel I didn’t find much that resonated with me. So the channel was an attempt to make the content I wanted to hear and see and hopefully the same way I felt it was missing, others would feel the same way and be happy to find it. I’m glad you’ve found it and I’m glad you’re a part of it. Thank you.

Personally, my favorite box sets are ones like ZZ Top’s, which collect their discography to a point in time in a space saving box. It’s a great way to explore a catalog for a reasonable price. I don’t want demos and I can live without the unreleased music. I don’t want DVDs or 5.1, and I especially have no interest in the miscellaneous junk that are sometimes thrown in.

I don't like when a boxset has a cd that combines demos & live songs on the same disc. Separate them & give us the FULL live show not just 5 songs as a filler for the only 5 demo songs you can find. Also no need for fold out posters. Nobody likes the creases & we're adults we don't hang posters on our bedroom wall anymore.

Really enjoyed the video. You guys are 100% right on everything you said. Record labels have found a new way to gouge fans with these super deluxe box sets. But history dictates there’s a bubble for everything, and it’s only a matter of time this trend comes to an end and people get fed up and stop paying the inflated prices. Not sure when it will because labels are making these “limited releases” so in order to guarantee you get them you have to almost pre order them at the expensive price they sell them for. Glad you guys brought up the GNR UYI box set. I’m a big fan and have had it sitting in my Amazon cart for months waiting on a price drop. It’s still retailing for $255 on Amazon Canada, at record stores I’ve seen it priced anywhere from $313-$340. Even at $255, for what you’re getting it’s not worth it (2 albums you have already, 2 live shows, a book and a bunch of junk you’ll look at once and never look at again). Brendan mentioned the same thing about the Kiss box set. I can’t justify spending that much money on it.

Great discussion! As for the live shows, bands should do what Kiss are doing with the Off the Soundboard series and release live albums separately, instead of putting them in a box set. Def Leppard released their 1983 live show at the L.A. Forum as part of a deluxe edition for 'Pyromania' and that drives me nuts because that was a good live show and unfortunately, there aren't any stand alone live album releases with Steve Clark. I'm not a big live album fan, but I'd kill for a live show from the Steve Clark era of the band. And despite how popular the show is, Def Leppard never released a live album for 'In the Round, In Your Face' separately from the 'Hysteria' box set and I have no idea why!

To be fair guys, the Jethro Tull sets have gotten much bigger overtime. Thick as a brick and aqualung were literally one cd and one DVD. The one you’re holding up today I believe six CDs and two DVDs. So I don’t think it’s so much then raising the prices, but us getting more product. I do agree with everything else you said. I am a massive box set collector and I have been since the days of CrossRoads and Bob Dylan’s biography. But once they start charging $400 for a minimal amount of music. I am not paying hundreds of dollars for plastic cars and marbles? I bowed out. I love surround sound music, especially in Dolby Atmos. But I’m not buying a $400 box set for the privilege to listen to it. I hate using streaming services, but Apple is my only option for this until these companies realize that we’re not made of money. To be fair I wasn’t comparing the bigger 8 disc boxset to the smaller 6 disc boxsets. But the cost has gone up from the 6 disc boxsets of equal content. Also the comment was meant as a generalization and not a specific instance. Just pointing out that even good boxsets with lots of content that are similar in size have also increased in price whether inflation or record label greed.

Okay my story is simple. I have “all” 8 Genesis Boxsets plus the made Phil Collins Box. Phil’s Box came with Face Value and Both Sides (my personal favorite by him) and go through the months collecting all of the consecutive albums after that. THEN after I finished the Box then go ahead and re-release all the albums as a full boxset with all albums included catch 22 was it was just the albums no 2nd CD’s with it. But I do not care what they want for it because I have the album that I collected over a time. They want me to pay for the full album collection again, after I paid roughly $160.00. Forget about that. And that’s not what I’m saying here but trying to keep it PG not PC 😁 unless there’s an boxset coming out that can give me bang for my buck you’re out of luck. That’s all for now Brendon and Anthony. -Your pal Bill-

You guys make some great points. One glaring example for me is Paul McCartney's Archive Collection. I went back and looked on Amazon, the series launched with McCartney, McCartney II, which I paid $49.99 each for, and Band on the Run, which cost $63.99. The most current release is Flaming Pie from 2020, I paid $278.18. That is quite a jump. They have made the sets bigger, added more swag but still that is a crazy jump. The sad thing is us McCartney fans are waiting for London Town and Back to the Egg, really the two main albums yet to be released. And I will buy them at $250 each like an idiot but McCartney is my favorite artist.

Great video. I refuse to buy these overblown over priced boxsets. Seems every album is celebrating some anniversary and releasing a boxset. I would prefer they turn to albums out of print. Love the Who, do I need a 10 album boxset of Who's next? I have already bought more times than I care to remember. There are so many out of print great albums I would spend money on, but I REFUSE to buy another copy of an album I already own just because it is remixed with outakes and demos, things will listen to probably once and never again.

  • @esteeb67

I don't need to rebuy an album I already own. What I want to see is more archival releases. The Stones have been doing a great job releasing different shows from various points of their career. And the best thing about the Stones is that their setlists are not repetitive. For those artists that do chug out the same old 10-15 songs each time, I would love to see a release of live rarities. Take AC/DC for example. Each tour they bring out some new songs, but most of those get retired pretty quickly. So it would be great to have live versions of Put The Finger On You, COD, Fly On The Wall, Go Zone, etc. Same with Maiden. We've got some for each of these artists but nowhere near complete. If you are going to rerelease a record I would like it in its original form and maybe with some b-sides or live shows along with it. If not a full show then live versions of some of the songs from that record. Demos... meh... unless it is something different like AC/DCs Dirty Eyes (the precursor to Rosie) or even their Touch Too Much which was completely rewritten, I don't need them.

I'm not a big fan of box sets, most I got are from my favourite band, of (at the time) new releases. I don't like the idea of having to upgrade anniversary box sets. I'd be much happier if they just came out as replicas of the original box, rather than throwing on some "newly" discovered material. That way it gives those who missed it the first time a chance, and those who did get it don't have to buy it again. If I buy reissues it's either the only way to get an album, or it comes with exclusive, interesting material. The Falkenbach collection box is one that was worth paying extra for, since it came with two legendary demos, restored to CD from the old tapes. I also like the Hammerfall reissue series; it comes in compact clamshells, is inexpensive, and contains plenty of extra music.

Speaking of the overpriced Dio boxset. They couldn’t just do his whole discography or another album or two? $200 for 4 albums is absurd. At least with the Deicide boxset that I paid that much for I got their first 7 albums released on roadrunner records, a live album, their first EP, giant poster, and these big stickers. Granted there were no lyrics sheets/liner notes for any of the albums. But at least I felt it was worth the price. Considering some of those albums were hard to find on vinyl.

As for books in the box, again, yeah, give us lots of details from the musicians and engineers about how each track was written and recorded. I actually love reading about a track while listening to it, and I love it even more if I have to repeat the track because I haven't finished reading the section about it yet.

Yes it is. But it really is no excuse as they have pointed out in this video, Most record labels own their own pressing plants and the cost of them to manufacture should be very very reasonable for them. So they are already price gouging regardless but they are really taking advantage during this period of inflation the states are experiencing. It’s a really scummy thing to do to fans of the music but most of those people in upper management at those record companies most likely don’t give a flying shit about fans just the money.

The cost of the raw materials has gone up, the cost of keeping a plant open with electricity has gone up, the cost of logistics and transporting the products has gone up. While, of course, there's always price gouging...there are economics to consider too. "Really no excuse" doesn't cut it.

This is nothing different than any collectors market, be it Action Figures, Comic Books, etc. The problem is the fans not the record companies. They will do whatever is the cheapest to make and can charge the most for. They will also do things that is completely illogical, because the love to piss off true fans. They have a resentment for their own fans like most companies! Whatever you want, they will do the opposite, because they hate you but want your money. That said, fans are dumb enough to follow along and open their wallets like pavlovian dogs. It comes down to this, like I tell any collector. If you want change, vote with your wallet! don't buy it and they will eventually kowtow!

@@BrendonSnyder I do have a case in point, but not from the record industry, but from the toy industry. Hasbro, the biggest manufacturer of toys, specifically action figures, which are marketed to the adult collector and not kids (kids don't play with action figures, at least not expensive ones). They had recently started doing windowless packaging to, as they say cut back on cost and relying on harmful plastic (even though the figures are made of harmful plastic). The market spoke with their wallet and Hasbro saw an immediate loss of 40% in sales. The immediately pivoted, admitted that it was a mistake and corrected the error, so they said. Production is 1.5 years ahead of itself, so the rollout would take some time to be seen on the shelves. This is a clear case of where a billion dollar company makes a terrible decision which results in record losses which the toy community has been very vocal about and they were forced to steer the ship back on course. Has it worked, we still don't know, but my point is resisting the urge to buy something, because your not happy with the quality, presentation, etc. will result in the manufacturer taking notice and responding. Again, this is just one industry, but Toy collectors, video game collectors, comic or even records all have the same essential behavior. We want what we want and if the company doesn't produce, we walk. I don't know, and here is my opinion, it feels like CEO's are either clueless, which begs the question, how do they have their jobs or, they actively resent their customers and simply don't acre, because despite a loss in sales, they still make billions. Disney and Star Wars is another case in point! I assume, record companies are subsidiaries of major corporations, so like other companies in the same situation, Marvel, Luscasfilm, etc. They need the customers not the other way around. if they make enough based on what they produce, then why change anything. Again, we have the power to change their decisions, but to many people just blindly buy whatever crap they sell. I guess if customers are starving for product, they will eat crap.
