Reconnected with my family 27 yrs after my mother’s friend stole me and changed my identity at age 5

When Joyce was 5 years old, her neighbor who also happened to be her mother’s friend made a decision that would change Joyce and her family forever. She took her when her mother was away and took her to a completely different location and that day marked the beginning of 27 years as a different person . From Joyce Wanjiru, to Joyce Chepngeno.
On today’s episode of LNS, Rebuilding series, she walks us through her life in those 27 years, finding out her whole life was a life, forgiveness, rebuilding and reconnecting with her family

I think what should be acknowledged is that such situations are complex and are not black and white like we like to think. She had an entire existence in the world she was thrust in and in those years there was the bad but still moments of joy and good. Listening to others who have gone through similar experiences you see that they cannot completely deny the bond that was created against the backdrop of having been kidnapped. This is her story.... this is how she has made it through, has been able to heal and forgive and move on. We cannot tell her how to be or deal with a life we have never lived. This is her life and her story. I am just glad that despite the pain and suffering she is not a victim but a woman who is now thriving and living out her purpose.

Remember Joyce is the victim in all this. She is the one who went through what she went through. The way she chooses to move ahead with her life is her business. She has decided to embrace all sides of her identity, the good, the bad, the ugly, and yes the names. Stop putting more labels on an already kidnapped, raped, isolated, innocent 5 y/o Joyce who had no role in what became of her life. Some insensitive comments are just whack, she has chosen to live life without regrets. This is not a sob story, its a story of hope and strength. Stop this nonsense of victimizing the victim. Thank you Joyce for telling your story.

They later broke up with the boyfriend and things became tough for the aunt. One day she left the girl with a neighbour to look after her pretending she had errands to take care of that day and would return later to pick her. That's how she left never to be seen again. My friend's true identity is giriama from coast and a Muslim. She ended up becoming a luo raised in Kisumu all her life by the neighbour who was a christian, married and had other three kids. My friend's names were changed, speaks fluent luo, adopted luo culture and Christianity. The story unfolded years later when she was in campus. She traced her people and reunited with them weeks before her wedding day. The events and Drama that followed....
