Recognizing Murdered, Missing, Indigenous Women and Girls on National Native American Heritage Day

As our country recognizes today as National Native American Heritage Day, we’d like to take a moment to address a critical issue facing our Native communities. According to Federal statistics, hundreds of Indigenous women are murdered and go missing, oftentimes, without effective reporting by law enforcement or prosecution of perpetrators.
In 2017, there were 5,712 reports of missing American Indian and Alaska Native women and girls; shockingly, the US Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database only logged 116 cases. Today, not only do we honor Indian Country, but we also honor the lives of our sisters…who were taken too soon.

Put that black pride fist down. That's an African thing. Your a redskin. I always support and pay homage to the indigenous Natives but police your people just like we are policing our people.

The FBI doesn't do enough for us. We are not under jurisdiction of the local law unless tribal police ask for their help. Most of the time these issue's are never solved.

My best friend beat up till her liver and kidneys gave out. They didn't so a thing to the man that did this. My sister in law found dead in a stream do to natural causes. She was in their 30s and healthy. My blood sister was almost taken into a truck, she was fighting and other natives had to go and fight that man off. They didn't do anything. I was almost kidnapped, my feet were too fast! Its a system to get rid of us all together. Angers me to the core. I hate it. I am scared to even let my daughters go out into the world because i know they are targets.

This is also happening in Canada and Mexico. With the same issues around racism and sexism, as well as the reservation system as created by the BIA. Remember…they were originally under the War Department. Indigenous women are more likely to be murdered than any other group.
