Recognizing, Identifying, and Treating GAPEWORM in your Backyard Chicken Flock (Update)
Hello and welcome back to High Altitude Homesteading. Thank you for being with us. In this video we give a 3 month update on our Gapeworm progress and how things are going. We also go over the signs and symptoms of Gapeworm, and what the best way is to correctly identify it in your chicken flock.
The top symptoms to look for include: Gasping, Wheezing, Trouble Breathing, Coughing, and Gaping. We discuss in this video how you can 100% identify Gapeworm in your chickens.
The medication we use to treat Gapeworm is Fenbendazole. We use a dosage of 3cc's of medication per GALLON of Water. We demonstrate in the video how, if you don't have a syringe handy, you can use a teaspoon to measure out 3cc's of medication (3cc's is roughly equal to 3/4 teaspoon). We get our dosing information from this website www.poultrydvm.com/condition/g....
Some measures you can take to help prevent Gapeworm include: adding Apple Cider Vinegar to your chickens water and adding Diatomaceous Earth to chickens food.
We discuss these things more in the video but that is a quick overview of symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

Woke up Christmas morning to a sick rooster. Had wheezing and never closed his beak. My son said it was probably gapeworm. Separated him from the flock, next day bought your recommended dewormer. Gave him .675cc directly. A day later he is better and crowing again. Deworming the Hens in their water. Thanks for the video.

Super clear information, thanks
Love all the ways you said the medicine name lol. Thank you so much for the video, its hard to find good info on this topic.
Thanks - I have been looking for a good comprehensive explanation of the process of treatment. This is excellent and exactly what I needed.

very useful video! thank you!
Thank you so much.
I have 3 hens about 4.5lbs each.1of them had gapeworm.I treated her with Safeguard pellets for cattle to young turkeys.I got a 1 lb bag for very cheap.I used both Zimecterin (Ivermectin 1.87%) paste with 1 crushed full pellet mixed with 1 T water and administered it via dropper.Not too much as not to strangle her.The paste did dissolve in water that I had.But it knocked it out in a week.Treated it for 5 days straight.
Thank you!! I'm going to try this today! Ive used diatomaceous earth randomly but Ive never wormed the flock like this before. We have a huge snail infestation going on in our yard and I wonder if that's how they got gapeworm!! Ive had my flock for 2 years already and never have we had ANY problems.

Yes gapeworms can be transmitted by snails and other insects. If you never had a problem before that may be where it's coming from. Good luck!
Question! So you treat them....then treat then again in 3 months.....then what? Annually thereafter? Twice a year? Not at all until someone shows signs? Thank you so much for this videi - it's very helpful as i have a young hen exhibiting these signs. :(
The only type of fenbendazole (pronounced Fen Ben Da Zol) that you should be adding to the water is Safe-Guard Aquasol which is pricey. The liquid goat wormer should be syringed directly to the chicken. The reason they are remaining "dormant" is because the liquid goat worm does not dissolve adequately in the water, and sits at the bottom so they aren't getting a treatable dose. Apple Cider vinegar and DE don't work. Apple cider vinegar is harmful to give in the hot summer months, as well. DE if it is inhaled can cause silicosis. It does nothing to help kill parasites when ingested because once it is wet the mechanism in how it harms parasites is in activated.

Thanks for your comment, do you know the dose of the liquid goat fenbendazole for chicken?
@user-ht7ci1dy1o
Ай бұрын
@@hamtajafari2385 Since the goat is 100 mg per ml, you would give between 0.2 to 0.5 ml/cc per chicken (20 to 50 mg a day orally per chicken for 3-5 days and then repeat in 10 days). Use 1 ml/cc syringes which provide dosage lines for those amounts.
@hamtajafari2385

Thanks. I searched veterinary reference book (Merck vet manual) and it recommended 50mg/kg , so for a 3 kg chicken it’ll be 150 mg = 1.5 ml of the safeguard fenbendazole suspension 100mg/ml. Did I give too much 😬
@notyouraveragegoldenpotato
21 күн бұрын
@hamtajafari2385 that's way too much. Yes the vets dose is near the dangerous/harmful level . It's completely unnecessary. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people follow the doses the other poster listed. I just did this morning even actually.
Is it possible to see them in the poop? I have a chicken making a rasping sound isolated and yesterday I notices some bright red long stings in her poop. Thank you
Treated my chickens back in August for gapeworm. Yesterday, (now in October) one of my chickens kept shaking her head and doing like she's yawning. Ugh, if it's not leg mites, plain ol'd mites or something else, chickens have too many problems. I think after this last batch, I think I may be done raising chickens after seven years. 😞
Eggs cellent. thank you
I treated my infected hen with aviverm to kill the gape worms and some red worm like matter has come out about 24 hours later. She is still gasping for air with a high pitched squeaking sound . If the worms are dead then how do they come out of the trachea? Not sure what I can do? Chris
How much do you give for the panacur horse wormer? The only liquid safeguard i can get in Canada is very pricey.
Egg withdrawal is only 3 days after the last day of treatment? I’ve seen 3 days, 14, to 28 days of withdrawal. Can you help clarify? Thank you!
Can we pull the gapeworm out if we see it ?
Can you feed that medicine directly to the chickens mouth
Hello sorry for the dumb question, i have a rooster who seems to do the gaping motion, almost like he's trying to swallow something, or like a yawn. He doesn't do it all day just at times. And breathes with its beak closed. No other symptoms but that gesture is really freaking me out, I read it could be trying to adjust its crop with this motion? I would greatly appreciate your insight

This sounds like it could be sour crop to me.
The link you shared says to repeat every 3 weeks, not 3 months. A little confused.
I had a severe infestation of snails and slugs in my backyard. My girls quickly took care of that problem, but now I’m dealing with Gapeworm. I read that the cycle can continue for up to four years in your yard because the eggs are in the chicken’s feces. Do you know of a way to treat the yard/their poop to kill the eggs/larvae naturally so it doesn’t continue? My dog eats chicken poop so now I’m having to keep the chickens penned up, or not let my dog in the backyard. So frustrating!

Yes that is true, gapeworms can live in the poop and soil for 3-4 years. In all my research I have not found a reliable way to treat the poop or soil for gapeworm unfortunately. The only way that I've found to deal with this is to preventively treat my flock twice a year. It sucks cause you can't eat the eggs for a few days but it is worth it in the long run.
How many chickens do you have and are these adult chickens? Trying to dose for my flock of 11 hens, all about 3 yrs old. Also what about for baby chicks about 3 months old?
@HighAltitudeHomesteading

We had 12 adult chickens at the time. From what I've found doing research, it doesn't matter how many chickens you have or what age the are, the important thing is you get the right ratio of mediation to water.
Avitrol is meant to be the best to treat this my rooster got gapeworm so im trying it now

I have had chickens off and on most of my life, I have never even heard of this till yesterday. I have one hen with these symptoms, I gave some oral ivermectin today but I will go to the farm store tomorrow and get enough for the whole flock.

mectin dewormers dont work as well for specifically gape worms. The zoles are more efficient for gape. I used ivermectin because its what I have here for the horses but vet said to use the zoles. Good luck

The medication discussed in the video does treat a lot of other types of worms. What you need to be careful of is the dosage and timeframe that you give them the medication. Some worms have different protocols so it is valuable to try and determine what type of worm you are dealing with.
How did this work out?

I have a hen shaking her head, my vet (without seeing her) thought it could be gapeworm and recommended 4 drops of ivermectin topically on the back of her neck, have you heard of this?

I had similar experience recently & did similar = Ivermectin (sheep drench) -- but 3 drops back of neck & 1 drop in mouth. My hen was gasping for air in the evening & back up and happy by morning & back with the flock the next day. I was advised to do the neck drops on the remainder of my flock (preventative). I was also told to repeat in 4 days & again in 14 days. All my girls are doing great now. I have had chickens most of my life & never had "gape worm" (that I know of) - so this was new & distressing.

Just a very small amount. I don't have exact dosages for that, because I could never find anything definitive online, but when I dosed them with it I just used a VERY small amount in their water. Like a "drop" or two (I know it doesn't come out in drops but you get what I mean).

Ivermecting DOESNT work on adult/mature gapeworm. Aka the real problem causers lol.
Does gapeworm cause them to sneeze? All they're doing us sneezing, shaking their head occasionally, and very rarely do the gasp for air. But they are completely active and eating/drinking water.. It's going on two weeks and I've tried a tetracycline/electrolyte mix but a couple of them are still occasionally doing one of these 3 symptoms.
@HighAltitudeHomesteading

It can cause sneezing in the early stages, yes, but you shouldn't use that as your only indicator to identify gapeworm.

If you think they have it then treat them. It won't hurt to treat them and if you don't they could die. Good luck!
The fenbendazole you are using is not water soluble and even if they are ingesting it, without a full direct dose it is useless. Repeat usage also contributes to antibiotic resistance.
Can you please learn how to pronounce the words before you publish educational videos... grapeworm???? Fenbendazole isn't hard to say 😊

Did you understand what was being said? Yes, based on the fact that you typed the words in your comment. You should reflect on the way you talk to people, even online. Shameful. There are kinder ways to correct people if your intent is to actually educate them instead of asserting some kind of superiority.
