Recognizing, Identifying, and Treating GAPEWORM in your Backyard Chicken Flock (Update)

Hello and welcome back to High Altitude Homesteading. Thank you for being with us. In this video we give a 3 month update on our Gapeworm progress and how things are going. We also go over the signs and symptoms of Gapeworm, and what the best way is to correctly identify it in your chicken flock.
The top symptoms to look for include: Gasping, Wheezing, Trouble Breathing, Coughing, and Gaping. We discuss in this video how you can 100% identify Gapeworm in your chickens.
The medication we use to treat Gapeworm is Fenbendazole. We use a dosage of 3cc's of medication per GALLON of Water. We demonstrate in the video how, if you don't have a syringe handy, you can use a teaspoon to measure out 3cc's of medication (3cc's is roughly equal to 3/4 teaspoon). We get our dosing information from this website www.poultrydvm.com/condition/g....
Some measures you can take to help prevent Gapeworm include: adding Apple Cider Vinegar to your chickens water and adding Diatomaceous Earth to chickens food.
We discuss these things more in the video but that is a quick overview of symptoms, treatment, and prevention.

Woke up Christmas morning to a sick rooster. Had wheezing and never closed his beak. My son said it was probably gapeworm. Separated him from the flock, next day bought your recommended dewormer. Gave him .675cc directly. A day later he is better and crowing again. Deworming the Hens in their water. Thanks for the video.

I have 3 hens about 4.5lbs each.1of them had gapeworm.I treated her with Safeguard pellets for cattle to young turkeys.I got a 1 lb bag for very cheap.I used both Zimecterin (Ivermectin 1.87%) paste with 1 crushed full pellet mixed with 1 T water and administered it via dropper. Not too much as not to strangle her.The paste did dissolve in water that I had.But it knocked it out in a week.Treated it for 5 days straight.

Thank you!! I'm going to try this today! Ive used diatomaceous earth randomly but Ive never wormed the flock like this before. We have a huge snail infestation going on in our yard and I wonder if that's how they got gapeworm!! Ive had my flock for 2 years already and never have we had ANY problems.

Yes gapeworms can be transmitted by snails and other insects. If you never had a problem before that may be where it's coming from. Good luck!

Question! So you treat them....then treat then again in 3 months.....then what? Annually thereafter? Twice a year? Not at all until someone shows signs? Thank you so much for this videi - it's very helpful as i have a young hen exhibiting these signs. :(

The only type of fenbendazole (pronounced Fen Ben Da Zol) that you should be adding to the water is Safe-Guard Aquasol which is pricey. The liquid goat wormer should be syringed directly to the chicken. The reason they are remaining "dormant" is because the liquid goat worm does not dissolve adequately in the water, and sits at the bottom so they aren't getting a treatable dose. Apple Cider vinegar and DE don't work. Apple cider vinegar is harmful to give in the hot summer months, as well. DE if it is inhaled can cause silicosis. It does nothing to help kill parasites when ingested because once it is wet the mechanism in how it harms parasites is in activated.

@@hamtajafari2385 Since the goat is 100 mg per ml, you would give between 0.2 to 0.5 ml/cc per chicken (20 to 50 mg a day orally per chicken for 3-5 days and then repeat in 10 days). Use 1 ml/cc syringes which provide dosage lines for those amounts.

Treated my chickens back in August for gapeworm. Yesterday, (now in October) one of my chickens kept shaking her head and doing like she's yawning. Ugh, if it's not leg mites, plain ol'd mites or something else, chickens have too many problems. I think after this last batch, I think I may be done raising chickens after seven years. 😞

And breathes with its beak closed. No other symptoms but that gesture is really freaking me out, I read it could be trying to adjust its crop with this motion? I would greatly appreciate your insight

I had a severe infestation of snails and slugs in my backyard. My girls quickly took care of that problem, but now I’m dealing with Gapeworm. I read that the cycle can continue for up to four years in your yard because the eggs are in the chicken’s feces. Do you know of a way to treat the yard/their poop to kill the eggs/larvae naturally so it doesn’t continue? My dog eats chicken poop so now I’m having to keep the chickens penned up, or not let my dog in the backyard. So frustrating!

Yes that is true, gapeworms can live in the poop and soil for 3-4 years. In all my research I have not found a reliable way to treat the poop or soil for gapeworm unfortunately. The only way that I've found to deal with this is to preventively treat my flock twice a year. It sucks cause you can't eat the eggs for a few days but it is worth it in the long run.

The medication discussed in the video does treat a lot of other types of worms. What you need to be careful of is the dosage and timeframe that you give them the medication. Some worms have different protocols so it is valuable to try and determine what type of worm you are dealing with.

I had similar experience recently & did similar = Ivermectin (sheep drench) -- but 3 drops back of neck & 1 drop in mouth. My hen was gasping for air in the evening & back up and happy by morning & back with the flock the next day. I was advised to do the neck drops on the remainder of my flock (preventative). I was also told to repeat in 4 days & again in 14 days. All my girls are doing great now. I have had chickens most of my life & never had "gape worm" (that I know of) - so this was new & distressing.

There are kinder ways to correct people if your intent is to actually educate them instead of asserting some kind of superiority.
