Recognizing and Fighting Idolatry

What is idolatry in our day? The people of Israel were tempted to bow down to literal idols, and in many parts of the world, literal idols and effigies are still believed to hold enormous power. But in the post-Christian West, idolatry-though harder to define-is just as prevalent.
On this episode of Let's Talk, Jackie Hill-Perry, Jasmine Holmes, and Melissa Kruger talk about how and why we are tempted to make idols. Although some may think we slip into idolatry when we want too much, Jackie says that, actually, "Idolatry is wanting too little." When we make idols, she says, we're looking to something that has been created to deliver us. But we need to look higher, above what is created to our Creator.

“We trust in the gift, rather than the giver of the gift!” That’s completely true!✝️😊

It amazes me how many times my heart attaches to different things. Idolatry is not just in the Old Testament!

I like how Jackie brought up idolizing theology … before she said it I was thinking to myself do I idolize prophetic words giving to me!?! 🤔 I recently experienced receiving a prophetic word that didn’t happen and became angry and bitter behind it and challenging God on why it was released. Past times when a prophetic word is spoken over my life specifically concerning my career it always come to pass … this time it didn’t so I’m like now what or why should I even believe 🤷🏾‍♀️ This pod is restoring my faith while checking my heart for any issues! 🙏🏾

Great discussion sisters. Got me thinking a lot more about my own heart and the idols it creates. Thank you Lord for your grace to me and to your people today.

(19:21)…I am content listen because here at least people are speaking with each other rather than at each other but…when I recognize how that Scripture has been misrepresented to the point that people believe “Eve got punished because she wanted too much” when in fact “idolatry is wanting too little”…I must admit that helped me see something more precisely in me about idolatry. Thanks again for sharing this with us. Very important gleaning…

I continue to struggle with how I deal with stress. I appeal to God for calm and then run for comfort foods and mindless TV. Ugh.

Don’t you think that Abraham worshipped his son? There was a danger that he could put Isaac before God in his affection/reverence. The scripture says, Abraham “loved” Isaac. It’s the first time that that word “love” appears in the Bible. God said to Abraham, “Now I know that you fear God” which I think really means, “Now, Abraham, you are aware and now have things in the right order” It’s not like God had to find out something, but Abraham needed to see something very important.

That’s why Moses did not enter the promised land, because he disobeyed the Lord Jesus Christ Yeshua. He did a Lotta good things, but because of that when he died, he just saw the promised land, but couldn’t go in Because God is a God of order not disorder, we might not understand why, but one of these days when we go to heaven, we will know the truth of everything that went on on the old testament. Not all these lies they gave us here on earth, because if you believe it everything that’s happening right now happened in the past in the Old Testament. Amen!
